2010 Maserati GranTurismo S Review - Still Haunted By The Problems of Old?
Vložit
- čas přidán 11. 11. 2020
- The Maserati Granturismo S is a beautiful car, with a gorgeous V8 soundtrack. In the past year I have been lucky enough to sample two of its ancestors - the 3200 and 4200 Coupe.
The Granturismo replaced these and was developed on a very tight budget, in a short space of time - famously being one of the quickest developed cars in history. But, as the old cars were deeply flawed in some ways, does this still suffer or have they finally created a truly lustworthy car that also lives up to expectations on the drive?

As a Granturismo S owner I can only say, best thing I ever bought in my life! ;-)
Yes it’s a good looking car and sounds very good, but the interior is outdated, the interior of the Maserati ghibli is better
@@hocineted7594 but only hac v6 engine :-)
love mine to
@@hocineted7594 BS.... The Gran Turismo interior is so much more classy. The infotainment is out of date but the rest of it is a timeless design
Dutch? Ownership cost not too much in NL ?
One of the greatest looking cars of the last 20 years. This can hold its head high against the classic Maseratis of old.
Agree, this and a Shamal
If only they used rounded ferrari style reat lights. It would be the sexiest car ever
Any Maserati can hold its own.
Agreed. Timeless design that will became a great classic and will hold its value over the years.
One of the best looking and sounding cars of all time. And hugely underrated. And they’re a lot more reliable than people think.
they dont really break that often, if you get the mc-shift you already knew what you signed up for. buy the zf and its a cheap car to own
Having owned one, they aren’t more expensive than a 911 to run once the depreciation has been taken by another owner
I have owned 4 Maseratis now, none of them have been unreliable... Maserati won a great number of races, you don't win if you don't finish. My 1986 QPIII was bullet proof!
Just the ghibli is unreliable is was manufactured by fiat dodge Chrysler
@@pimpjuicedp I'm assuming you meant 'unreliable' and 'it' ...I have friend that owned one and it was completely reliable during his 4 years of ownership. Have you owned one? If so, for how long? Just curious, as many people who rate them are not owners, they just perpetuate false realities
I have owned a 2010 4.2L since new. Its at 50k km and has been used as a true family daily driver (yes, it has had furniture in the rear seats). It has been the most reliable car I have owned in the past 15 years (others were BMW 330i, E63 AMG, G55 AMG, CL420, GL450, and a volswagen jetta tdi). Service costs are high, true, but she has never let me down. We usually do at least one 3-4k across europe trip every summer, and this summer we went to corsica via ferry and then ran through the alps on the way back to Paris. The 4.2L can lack some power as the engine is detuned a lot. Put her on the dyno and with a simple tune on stock exhaust, she will do 430 bhp, which is not too far from the 4.7L.
Just put some proper winter tires on last week, and Covid willing,we are heading to the Alps for Christmas.
Great reviews, keep up the good work.
12 years later and still stunning... That's the magic of Pininfarina design, timeless...
I could listen to that sound for ever. Makes the Alfa busso sound tame.
i get to do that every day.... makes me smile :-)
Many years ago, I had the extreme pleasure of seeing a chap pull out of the petrol station with one of these which had an especially loud exhaust. Oh…my…word… it was chef kiss 🤌. I’ll never forget that sound in person.
the alfa busso is tame tho
Busso sound is overrated
Alfa used a variant of this engine in the 8C. The Brera concept used this engine as well!
The car styling is very good looking and elegant
I’ve owned my 2015 for a few years now and can only say the driving experience is something everyone should get to experience at least once.
@ray h. Aston martins has that ford focus grille 🤢
It can be haunted by anything if it sounds like that 😍
I've owned my 14' Granturismo Sport for a year and it's always an experience every time I drive it. The only thing I hate about it is that I keep wanting to take it out for a spin when I have work to do. Extremely reliable too!
That's good to hear! For the price of a loaded Camry you can get such a beautiful machine!
The Maserati GranTurismo has been one of my favourite cars for some time, and I think will be a classic in years to come.
I once saw a Granturismo MC Stradale in Manchester. I say saw, I mean you heard it for at least 10 minutes before you saw it. And WHAT a sound it was! Beautifully engineered engines
just purchased my 2008 Gt with 30k miles for 31, absolutely love this car. So far no problems , and it gets a lot of attention. Drove it more than I expected over the summer, I just couldn’t resist.
2 years in, how’s your ownership been so far?
How do you like it? Is it reliable?
As someone once said: It sounds like an angry lion stepping on a lego part 😁 this isnt the fastest to smth, most powerful, nor the most modern infotainment system, but, oh boy, that sound of the NA V8! Shut up and take my money! 😁 Seriously! And you've got proper 4 seater, the sexiest pininfarina, post F355 era, sports car! A breath taking GT! Its like seeing a top model on the streets, it gives you an instant adrenalin kick!
Clarkson said it
Can’t say I’m a big Maserati fan, but this car is stunning, and that sound... wow. An absolutely sublime motor!
To understand this car, you have to live with it daily, you HAVE to own 1. I also have a 2015 Gallardo that I seldom drive because my GT is *soooo much fun.* It's really is hard to explain!
I'd take the GT over a Gallardo too. They do both get skittish when downshifting though I noticed.
I’ll always love this shape of car; the post 2013 MC Stradale will be mine one day
I have a 2011 GT Convertible and I absolutely love it! Had it two years so far a no issues. There's nothing like listening to that wonderful Italian V8 symphony with the roof down! It's one of the best sounding cars ever produced.
I have the same car with the ZF auto gearbox and absolutely love it. It’s the pick if you want to keep your service costs down but admit it’s not quite as sharp. In 5 years of ownership I’ve had no mechanical issues. Only known issue with the early cars was cam variator failure but that was easy to detect and fix so rarely catastrophic. I’m keeping mine, it’s the best V8 ever made in my opinion although we have to thank Ferrari for that.
i've been tossing up whether to buy a 2009 S with the ZF box. your comment might just help me to pull the trigger...
Great fun and a great GT car. Had mine 3 years and never ever broke or had any issues. Took it all over Europe without a hiccup. Sold it with 9k on the clock. Rock solid at speed on the autobahn
I have one and I love my car. I used to have M3 and M5 and I went from from night to day. I cannot says enough how much fun this car is .....
Just the review we were waiting for as many of our members asked our thoughts about this model Maserati. We’ll point them here. Keep up the good work.
Beautiful car, great noise, fantastic review as usual James!
One would argue that the 4.7 V8 has one of the best sounding engines of the modern era. Buy this car for that engine and glorious aural experience alone. That the appearance is classically stunning to behold among its contemporaries, is a genuine 4 seater adds to the appeal.
I do look forward to your next Maserati GranTurismo/GranCabrio chapter.
Great review as always. Such a pleasure to watch your reviews. Being nearly 30 these are all cars I used to dream about as a teenager.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Your videos just keep on getting better and better. I really enjoyed that !
As an owner of a 2018 GT, I absolutely love this car...the combination of looks, comfort, and of course sound in incredible. Having previously owned Alfas, Ferraris...this may be the best of them all. No problems to speak of in the 3 years I have owned it. As far as changes to the car, everybody criticizes this car for having basically the same looks for 13 years...what about the 911..it basically looks the same for the past 30 years...nobody ever says they did not upgrade the style!
I like cars that have long production runs as you can usually update the earlier ones with parts from later cars that have had more time to be developed
I always loved the look of this car. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
No nonsense reviews and so much knowledge. Engaging to listen to. Thank you.
My pleasure
My word that engine sounds amazing. A proper eargasm. If only there was a specialist nearby I’d have one on my driveway.
A lot to like and makes a great noise without breaking the speed limit - usable power and accessible enjoyment.
Been driving my 2014 Sport for almost 3 years *every* day...Has been an extremely solid vehicle for me, love this vehicle!!!!
Something that sounds like an Alfa Romeo 8c for that price..!!! My dream car. :) Great video as always .
I am pretty sure it used the same engine as the 8C
@@23Piccolina Aye true.
I think it actually has A LOT of commonality with the 8C. almost to the point that the 8C is a different body on the basic mechanics which are the same car.
When you think of the price of an 8C and compaire it to the price of these...wow
I love the 8c but this Maserati sounds just like one & will be better on parts than my present 1988 Ferrari Mondial 3.2, for a similar purchase cost.
Kind of a neat idea to do a car type / brand change / direction. Thoroughly enjoy your presentations. Thanks.
Excellent review, much appreciated.
Thanks for making this informative and helpful review
used these are a great proposition. cheap with great looks and one of the best sounding exhaust notes ever
Awesome car. love my 2014 Granturismo. I’ll probably keep it forever.
You don’t need to worry about depreciation if you never sell it!
Perfect sound and great looking👍👍👍
I renember exactly where I was when I saw one for the first time, Villefranche on the French Riviera. A motoring journo was reviewing one just after launch in 2007. I remember being mesmerized by the looks and the sound. I chatted to him. for a bit while the car was being photographed and I remember his initial impression was positive. Would I have one probably. It's alot of Car for the money...
I was on the fence about getting this car. None of the videos or articles I’ve studied have helped me get to a conclusion. But this video has certainly made it easier to understand what I’d be getting. Thanks for making such excellent reviews!
Beautiful, elegant car and a stunning example in the video!
Great video again, they’re fantastic cars and a good one is an absolute pleasure. You’re welcome to come and drive any of ours if you’d like to, I currently have 5 in stock, only 3 are listed as of today, but I’ve a couple more being prepped and inspected etc.
Nice to see you going through the whole Range and the next sport will be interesting Stunning sound on always makes me turn my head when I hear one go by always interested in the 3200 and this car but always out of my price range but I think it's a unique thing very nice as long as you can afford the running cost👍
That looked and sounded gorgeous. Definitely something to consider.
finally the vid I've been waiting for
The price they are aswell. Very tempted
@@wpjohn91 you should definitely go for it as long as you find a proper looked after and serviced example
This is an excellent review covered all the points im interested in
My brother bought himself a 2013 Quattroporte GTS. He loves the car so much cause of the 4.7 V8
Great taste! One of my top 5 favorite 4 doors ever.
You should try an MC strad, also QP V GTS. Good review as usual, a pleasure to watch.
I appreciated the video. Thanks for all the infos
Great review and channel
Great review. Looking forward to a review of the 2013+ Sport model
I love your reviews!!!
Ahh the daily dose of jay emm part of my morning routine 👌
A massive thanks, dealers have the attitude "no test pilots" so it's hard to find out what the car is really like, this has definitely helped me decide.
Great review. Thank you. Am considering a used 2010.
Top work, good review
Great review brother
I'm pleased by your comments about the "Sport" This car had a number of variants, and I'm really interested by how a model which was around for a long time evolved over it's lifetime - So looking forward to a review of "Sport" version.
I’d buy one of these just for the glorious sound. Sounds fantastic and no wet fart noises when you change gear.
One of my friend used to own one in Giallo Modena, complete with Novitec exhaust. Only a Novitec-equipped 360 Modena is louder within the convoy of several sportscars (and there are other machines too like R8, Rapide, Gallardo, and 981 Boxster)
Great review. I have and love mine!
You would just never get tired of that exhaust.. sounds great. and it looks really nice too. But they are indeed quite massive.
Try me. I hope it is quiet at the top gears. I am not interested in taking a 1000 mile trip and have that damned noise in my ears instead of classical music on its stereo.
I’d love to see a review of the QP5 GTS as part of this series on Maserati.
Beautiful and that sound, what a sound!
Great review JayEmm (as usual). I own a 2nd gen 2012 GTS and absolutely love it. As a father of two young boys, this is strangely an excellent allrounder and for any parent out there who wants something different (read not German), the Maser is an alternative to be considered.
You need to have a look at Dadcars channel here on youtube - he has 4 young daughters and he drives an Aston Martin with them in it! He also did a review of the GranTourismo and absolutely loved it.
That is 1 awesome chorus line 🎵🎶👌🏻
You could buy that just to rev it in the driveway each weekend and it’d still be a great buy…
Best car reviewer on youtube I could watch your content all day its so concise and you get the mix of serious knowledge and tongue in cheek jokes just perfect 👌 you my friend should be on the TV.
I appreciate that!
@@lastwhtknight3002 aww you guys
It's one of those cars I wish I was rich enough just to have sat around so I could admire it.
You can get one for 35k
@@miguelberetta7887 I'll check under the sofa cushions to see if I've got 35k to spare...

@@santbhindranwalejidefanche8767 I'll have something more sensible to actually drive, this one will just sit around and look pretty
My Granturismo S has been one of my favorite cars. Expensive for regular service but reliable. Nothing beats the exhaust note.
Yeah had two of these now and great motors. Had the MC Shift 2009 and now got a GT Sport MC Auto Shift which is awesome as there are no clutch worries and the box has the same software effectively. Brilliant.
I bought a 2016 Granturismo S in 2019. Every drive is an adventure. Beautiful, sounds wonderful, more than fast enough. Took a 1700 mile road trip with the whole family 4 people. Every one of us would do that again.
My God that engine sounds epic. A great looking car. Can you fix the ride with modern dampers I wonder. Great review James.
Just take the S version with the MC suspension (saw some speced with that option). The skyhook suspension presented here does a good job but the S version (transaxle in case of the MC gearbox) with MC suspension makes it a really nicely balanced setup.
I’m tempted.. been looking at these for the last couple of years as looking for something different/interesting to replace my 981 cayman.
Love the 981! There getting more and more expensive
What a wonderfully stylish car and that sound! My sensible head Would have an XKR over one just for the reliability and extra comfort.
Would really like a comparison between this and the MC Stradale. Somehow Maserati made the MC even louder and handled rather well as described by some.
I've had my 2012 s for going on 6 yrs....absolutely love every second of it😎
Is it bad on maintenance?
I’m buying mine soon I can’t wait !!
Lusted over a GranTourismo for years. Nearly got one a while back but plumped for a more modern M3 (I like toys in the car). The GT is stunning though... I think I may have regrets.
A beautiful Pininfarina design. I've always liked this car. They are just so expensive to repair and keep up.
I did rear brakes for less than I did last BMW5..... oil and air fillters both cheaper.... yep some parts can be expensive, but no more than bmw/porsche
@@Turbojetkart Here in Calif, front brakes cost more than just about any other car. I have a friend, who's co-worker owns this car. Front brakes, $2700!
My GT is ridiculously cheaper to maintain than my BMW 535i. Extremely easier to work on too!!! In fact almost everything about my Masi, when it comes to DIY, is cheaper to do than my BMW.
@@tima.478 It always helps if you can repair a car DIY style. I would have to take it to a Maserati dealer, then the raping begins.
@@23Piccolina You're absolutely right too...Simple oil change is about $400 at my dealer, I do it for about $60-$75 depending if I get the oil on sale or not. Same Pennzoil Plat Syn 5W-40 dealer uses too!
I owned a 2012 Granturismo S for two years and 12k miles, it was great and the only issue I had was an intermittent fault with a front parking sensor.
They need to be driven regularly and I drove it a lot, including getting it up to 170mph on the autobahn, it was very calm and stable at that speed and it felt very undramatic apart from the scenery going past quite quickly.
There were three different suspension options, standard, Skyhook and MC Sportline, my car had the Sportline suspension which was almost identical to the Stradale setup and made it handle very well without destroying the ride comfort.
My car had the MC shift gearbox which I loved and because the gearbox was at the back it actually had a slight rear weight bias which improved the balance and grip compared to the fully automatic car which has the gearbox on the back of the engine and has a slight front weight bias.
Jay, you mention the weight distribution. Actually the S version has a perfect one: 49% to 51%.
The engine is entirely behind the front axle and unlike the S Automatica version, the S version with the MC gearbox has transaxle (the gearbox is mounted at the rear wheels) which gives it the best weight distribution of the Granturismo range. Something which distinguishes it from the rest and will make it sought after.
I doubt it, the MC gearbox is considered much less reliable than the torque converter version, is it not?
@@WowzaBoyz Do not underestimate the reliability of the MC gearbox and do not confuse it with the box installed in the predecessor Maserati 4200 / Coupe / Gransport. As a matter of fact, the MC box and clutch in the Granturismo S are from the Ferrari 599 GTB. That is, designed to deal with the torque of the Ferrari V12, they can easily cope with the torque of the V8. These are mechanicaly very solid units. I possessed two Granturismo S and never read about reliability issues. There is just one thing to consider with any robotized single clutch manual gearbox (the same is valid for Audi R8, Aston Martin etc.): Try to prevent creeping in traffic jam. Talking about the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, for instance, the clutch is not fully engaged at speeds under 7 km/h (roughly 4.3 mph). That is, when in traffic jam, just allow for a bit of space in front of you. No worries, it is not cumbersome in daily life. Also, simply treat it like a manual gearbox at traffic lights by putting it into neutral when stationary. The Granturismo S (with the MC box) of a friend of mine has roughly a mileage of 110000 km (around 68000 miles) and is on the first clutch still. I sold my previous Granturismo S with the MC box at a mileage of 65000 km and the clutch wear was still under 40% (the dealer can read out this parameter from a clutch sensor).
What are you on about the mc shift is basically the same gearbox as the gransport/4200 with sharper tuning that you can get with dbw module for those cars
Total nonsense, mc shift drives very similarly with all the same plusses and minuses as those cars, just sharpened
It was never a bad gearbox, it was solid as hell in the 4200/gransport too and is very similar to the f430 - can handle plenty of power. I test drove an f430, it felt just like the gransport.
The problem was the stock soft tuning that Maserati used to soften it's harshness - easily rectified by the dbw modules.
The MC shift wasnt as well tuned as a dbw either, and a dbw is a good idea on the mc shift too
As for reliability - the mc shift is much less reliable, like any manual or automated manual, than an auto slushbox. Auto is almost always more reliable.
However, the mc shift is a much more engaging drive, as are the 4200/gransport gearboxes. The auto granturismos automatically upshift and are much more soft when driven hard.
Thats the tradeoff - softer but smoother auto or jerkier and less smooth but more engaging race gearboxes.
Beautiful sound and beautiful looks.
Always loved these, fortunate enough to see and hear one in this exact colour most days of the work on my commute into work.
One of the best sounding cars for sure.
Great looking car with a fantastic sound.
As a 4 year owner of a 4.2L GT, I can tell you it has been very reliable and an amazing driving experience! I really love my car
Does yours have the Skyhook Monica?
Neighbors bought their daughter one of these in black years ago and they still have it, gorgeous car, it could be released today and it would still look like it was a new car. They also have a black Maserati SUV and have to say it's pretty damn good looking.
Gimme that daughter's number
Gimme that daughter's number

People complaining about the infotainment system it's those who drives a bmw with no soul or sound so that's why the infotainment it's so important to them! For us owners of the Maserati we just enjoy the engine sound.Ohh and you must fit an x-pipe to this car!
Still a stunning car!!! Here on central coast California, I would only be able to look at it as traffic is so congested ALL OF THE TIME, I would never be able to enjoy that beautiful sound.
I have a white 2015 Granturismo MC with red leather. It’s one of the best cars I have ever owned. Everybody loves it. And it sounds just as beautiful as it looks.
Still one of the best looking GT cars ever. Gorgeous car and a mouth-wateringly tempting buy....
One of my all time favourite cars!
nice review.... I have had mine a year, its driven every day, with no issues, the 6 speed auto is the ZF unit BMW, JAG and many others have used.... cheap to service, and good for over 100,000 miles. in mauual sports mode, loads of fun..... not as good yes as twin clutch porsche.... but the sound , and all round fun of the car makes up for it, as for dated infotainment, usb bluetooth in AUX and smart phone, what more do you need :-)
I was watching another channel about these Luxury Ferraris and he solved many issues by finding the correct OEM Radio?
The Masareti car has a computer that reads errors unless all computer systems check out as correct and working.
Beautiful.Cars !
.
Owned a MC Shift variant for 4 years, had lots of fun and trouble free life with it . Only sold as I wanted a smaller and convertible car
I happen to own one of these, a black 2009 S ,one of only 300 brought to North America. Got it for base model minivan money. It looks like what James Bond drives when he visits Milan and sounds like God’s revving it on a cold start. I love shifting the heck out of it, up down up down downdown....crack,pop cue the orchestra. No problems in 4K of glorious driving,if something breaks I DON’T CARE, I’ll fix it. There’s something about it that’s greater than the sum of the parts, something special,something.....Italian. A true classic of a dying breed this car has a “road presence “ like few others. It truly makes you feel special and there’s no price tag on that.Like your vids ... keep it up.
Just bought a 2008 GT, and I love it and now live for the weekend to take her out.
I also have a boxster spyder but always wanted a beefy v8 GT for comfort and a good sized 4 seating arrangement.
The noise of start up cold is like a choir signing in harmony.
Yes within a few days I was £900 for a new alternator but buying a maserati means you need larger pockets.
Another great review, thanks! So when are we seeing an E63/4 M6 review..? ;)
When he gets his HGV licence, obviously!
@@OsellaSquadraCorse Huh? So a car with the same amount of doors, that weights less and has more HP and is built in the same era is not a worthy competitor?
I love the sound it is a beautiful work of art
Great review James. I've driven most varieties of Gran Turismo and of the earlier cars I think the MC Shift is the most fun. Bit of a curveball but the Quattroporte Sport GT with the Duoselect box (ie robot manual) I felt drove better than any 4200/3200 including the Gran Sport and the maybe even the Granturismo 4.2
