  • Welcome to another episode of Awkward Chats! In this video, we dive into Disney's recent changes to the Disability Access System (DAS) and share our candid thoughts and experiences. If you're planning a trip to Disney or simply curious about the new DAS rules, this is a must-watch!
    The Disability Access System (DAS) at Disney is designed to help guests with disabilities enjoy the parks more comfortably by providing special accommodations. However, recent updates to the system have left many of us feeling frustrated and excluded. In this episode, we unpack the details of these changes and discuss how they impact guests with various disabilities.
    Disney's DAS now requires advanced registration and tighter criteria for eligibility. While this system aims to streamline the process, it unfortunately excludes certain disabilities that were previously accommodated. We share personal stories and reactions from the community, highlighting the challenges and disappointments these new rules bring.
    At the end of the video, we discuss our channel's future direction in light of these changes. As long-time Disney enthusiasts and advocates for inclusive travel, we’re committed to keeping you informed and sharing our honest reviews. Come get lost with us to hear our plans for upcoming content and how we aim to navigate this new landscape.

    The most accurate analysis of the DAS situation that I have heard. I've been going to Disney World since it opened. I've worked through several Fast Pass changes. The old Fast Pass systems worked because they limited the number of passes issued. Now, they have gotten greedy and the lines are unmanageable. They are selling more passes than the lines can handle. Last year I found that the standby line for Peter Pan had been closed because the Lightning Lane was too long. Without a standby lane, there was no return time for DAS holders to use.

      That’s insane- I haven’t experienced them shutting down the main que yet but I 100% believe you. It’s sad that this what it’s become and it truly breaks my heart. Thank you for your support, feel free to share this video with any and everyone that has any real question about what’s really happening. I hope in the future that they will roll back these hyper aggressive changes and become the accommodating and amazing Disney we all once loved to experience.

    So I am an annual passholder, have a disability (which is considered a developmental disability because my brain is affected), However, my disability mainly affects me physically and I have a service dog for mobility. I have always gotten approved for DAS. Now, I'm terrified and even having nightmares that I won't get approved for DAS. Before anyone says "oh just use a wheelchair/scooter" I can't. 1. That would take my independence away 2. Defeats the purpose of having my mobility service dog with me 3. I would get too stiff and be in more pain 4. Whether I'm sitting or standing the heat bothers me the same way and 5. My service dog and me sitting a wheelchair (power chair or manual) or a scooter we wouldn't be able to fit in the line he would have to go behind me where I wouldn't be able to see him. Sorry for all of that I'm just super frustrated that now I may not be able to ever go to Disney again. Oh another thing I have 4 immediate family members that I go to Disney with so I guess now I'll just have to pick 3 of them. I have been using DAS for 20 years (since I was 4/5)

      Wow, I am so sorry that you’re in this same boat about the DAS. Thank you for taking the time to watch and share your story. I think it’s very daunting thinking about how to navigate this process and advocate for ourselves. It’s one of the hardest things to do. If you do decide to go through the process and they can’t make accommodations that will work for you there are a few additional steps to try. 1. As a AP reach out directly to Disneys park experience and the disability services, let them know what happened during your call and why it doesn’t work. Can’t guarantee this will change anything immediately but they need feedback in written form. 2. Reach out to the Americans with Disabilities, and send them essentially the same letter you send Disney and how you’re not getting accommodated. 3. This isn’t the solution and it’s the saddest step of all but taking your hard earned money and business elsewhere. It will take sometime till this all settles and plays out but if we stop giving Disney money this may force them to change. This step breaks my heart the most but I know it’s sometimes the only way to create change. Please let us know when you do decide to do the interview and let us know what the outcome was.

    the biggest issue I have is the fact you have to buy a ticket/reservation BEFORE you know if you're approved! that is INSANE. If the only way I can go to the parks is with a DAS pass, that simply isn't fair. Disney is all about money -- that's it. I'm not sure of their reasoning for having to purchase a ticket first.

    I can’t wait until we hear more experiences of those with invisible disabilities using this new system. I’m waiting for a class action lawsuit, and I’ll be the first one to sign up. This is ludacris and seems like it violates ADA in so many ways. We are DVC members and I was pretty much raised at WDW while, for the first time ever, I’m dreading my next trip. Get a grip Disney. Didn’t it just come out that the parks sector made over $1B in revenue over the last year? And Disney is worried about losing money on the few who have abused the system?! Disgusting. I really wished Disney would just require paperwork. I work as a school and constantly heard my high schoolers brag how they all had DAS by claiming anxiety, heat exhaustion, ptsd and idk what else. They would give each other tips and most if not all approved (high school in Florida). Not saying enough people lied to make a difference but for sure the system was abused. A middle ground was needed but this def isn’t it. Really enjoyed your opinions and video!

That’s called observer bias, in research,and again, as we have said many times in the comments and in the video, Disney themselves have never come out directly and claimed abuse of the system. If it was being abused they would come out and defend themselves with evidence don’t you think?
      Stop doing a disservice to those who need accommodations by defending those who hoard everything. The only reason this decision was made was to push people into paid systems.

  • @Reportermel30
    @Reportermel30 Před měsícem +1

    I think if they insist on using Genie Plus they should do away with the "one ride one time." why not have like a punch system type thing where you have 15 punches and you can use it however you want -- like if I want to ride Thunder Mountain five times then I use five of the 15 punches and I have 10 left. there are so many rides on the Genie Plus that I will NEVER ride. it's like they want to force you to ride rides you don't want to ride.

    • @LostGirlinTomorrowland
      @LostGirlinTomorrowland  Před měsícem +2

      We never understood that either. Why make a paid system that only lets you ride each ride once. Also, if you pay for Genie Plus to use as your “substitute” accommodation and all the times are booked for a ride you love. You are essentially excluded from that ride for the day.

It used to be if you were staying club level, you had the option to pay any additional $50 per person per day to purchase 3 additional FastPasses per day in addition to the normal 3 free FastPasses and the additional FastPasses had no ride tier restrictions & purchasing the extra ones, allowed you to schedule all 6 FastPasses 90 days in advance instead of just the normal 60 days in advance for resort guests. I am mostly on board with your takes except: A) I think rider swap is generally a fine accommodation if you have a party of 4+ who are not selfish buttholes (if they *are* buttholes then you’re waiting alone despite the group size). And B) DAS users do *sometimes* have a significant effect on the standby line because the ratio of standby to lightening lane that are fed through, at the merge, is determined by the lightening lane wait time alone. If the lightening lane line is long enough, the ratio can go very high, that means the standby line becomes an excruciating stand-still line.

    • @LostGirlinTomorrowland
      @LostGirlinTomorrowland  Před měsícem +2

      Thank you for taking the time to comment. To the first point rider swap does not give someone the same experience. For example, two people go and they do rider swap. Those people are barely going to see each other during the day. If they didn’t need an accommodation they would spend all day together. That’s not the same experience, not to mention those who need their caretakers in case something more severe happens. Again, accommodations like rider swap for some could lead to someone getting hurt.
      To the second point, as we said in the video lightning lane can be oversold but let me see any data you have saying that was DAS folks not just executives overselling the line for more profit. We have to stop punching down and direct your anger and frustrations to the greedy executives.

    I absolutely refuse to plan a Disney World vacation without being assured that we can use DAS. We have used DAS in the past, our kids are special needs, one has physical issues and the other mental issues. We carefully plan our Disney vacations around low crowd times, mild weather and health status to increase our chances of enjoying the parks. Even with DAS there are many attractions that are not accessible, either because of the restraint systems or mobility restrictions. I would prefer to hold onto the fond memories of past vacations than have a ridiculously expensive miserable vacation because of changes due to other peoples abuse and greed.

      @LostGirlinTomorrowland  Před 25 dny

    • @jimeagle1155
      @jimeagle1155 Před 4 dny

      Cast member told me that they toy have to wait 10 minutes because the DAS lets you check in 10 minutes early. I don't know if that means that the return time is 10 minutes less than standby or they let you check in 10 minutes before your scheduled time.

    • @LostGirlinTomorrowland
      @LostGirlinTomorrowland  Před 4 dny

      So with the DAS even when you get back to the ride you wait in the lightning lane it not like you can go directly onto the ride when you check in. There has always been a little leeway on check in times, especially with cast member discretion. They tend to treat it like the LL times.

    • @jimeagle1155
      @jimeagle1155 Před 4 dny

      So what's the issue with the 10 minutes then? They could make you actually go to the ride to schedule a return time so I think it's nice you don't have to do that. By the time you do the LL and do the ride it will probably be 10 minutes anyway. If you want to schedule a new ride immediately after checking in at a ride then you can buy that option.

      @@jimeagle1155 it’s just a weird quirk 🤷🏻‍♀️ if that’s what I had to go through to keep DAS then so be it. But again, when you use DAS, your waiting the amount of time posted, plus whatever the wait time is in the LL. So if the wait is 60 mins, you wait 60 outside the cue, then if LL is 35 you’re waiting 35 in that cue. It just overall slows the process down. Just an observation that is a weird thing they changed for some reason.

  • @ritam2025
    @ritam2025 Před měsícem

    I’m seeing this all over TikTok. The new DAS is a total mess, but let’s be honest, not having to wait in the physical line and having a return time pretty much removes everything horrible about having to wait for a ride. Without having to wait in all the long physical lines, many can enjoy way more things that are typically impossible to squeeze into one (very expensive) day: meeting characters, seeings shows, trying new food and drink, shopping, photo ops. People are acting like it's not a massive perk, but it clearly is, hence the gross overuse of it. And if what I keep hearing is actually true and the wait upon return is not much shorter (or is even longer) than the regular line, why would anyone want the DAS pass anyway? Because if that is the reality, the pass isn’t even working well. Something is not adding up (admittedly, from an outsider's perspective).

    • @LostGirlinTomorrowland
      @LostGirlinTomorrowland  Před měsícem +1

      Wow, there is a lot of assumptions there. While some may use that opportunity for other experiences, mine is all I can explain.
      Of note, most of the things you listed meeting characters etc. have lines. So those people are not waiting in those lines, if they did it would have to be something short enough for them. That is a personal preference based on their disability.
      As for the return to line, not everyone is getting offered that and as we talked about in the video, there are major concerns about that type of accommodations. That system wouldn’t work for my accommodations and we explained why in the video.
      For me personally, waiting longer doesn’t bother me, as I feel safer waiting outside the queue. And yes the DAS waiting system is broken and complicated by ILL but that’s whole other issue.
      Thank you for taking time to comment. We will be making more videos in the future about this on going issue.

      @@LostGirlinTomorrowland Great points! New subscriber here! I’m just trying to understand it and am not a Disney pro at all.
      I was at WDW a few months ago and after, realized that someone in my immediate family would surely qualify for DAS (as well as under the new rules) but I decided I will stay away from it in the future since now that I know where the challenges were from that visit, will come up with better personal solutions for us (even if it means more hassle / less rides) and leave this DAS mess to those who may need it more and literally not have any other solutions. I’m not getting there again anytime soon though hehe.

      I just want to explain to someone why getting the chance to return to a ride 45 minutes later and entering a shorter queue closer to the ride is an accommodation that makes my day a lot better, as I am legally blind, traveling through those lines bumping into those metal poles that are usually appear at a nowhere can be quite daunting. Just to explain I am legally blind and using it is how I would normally navigate but tapping the back of peoples legs 1000 times a day and hacking to say excuse me I’m sorry can be very wearing. So I choose not to use a cane and have someone guide me And having a shorter distance to travel makes my day a lot better. And I also would like to explain that traveling the park in the same manner even with the cane is very slow and can be very tiring. I probably lose 40 to 50% of the value of day pass Just in navigating the park so they say that Disney is giving people with disabilities a big advantage is kind of sad to think that way and the same goes for people in the wheelchair. Think about navigating that park through those crowds in a wheelchair it’s not easy. So now that Disney is talking about taking back some of these accommodations is very sad. And I do believe it’s an attempt to make more money on this genie pass and that is set up a kind of competition between people with disabilities and people with money and they feel that people with disabilities are getting in their way. I guess so poor management has caused this problem and poor financial decisions has also made this worse, and now Disney trying to make up the money on the people in the parks, their most loyal customers. If this turns out to be the way things are going to go I’ll either try to use Universal Park or just skipped amusement parks altogether and skip Disney completely! 34:23

The amount of vitriol I’ve had spat at me not just by abled body people but disabled people as well is heartwrenching. I’ve never had the misfortune to be directly attacked for my disability UNTIL THIS CHANGE. Whether you’re on Disney’s side or not it’s obvious they don’t care about you. This is primarily about money. They would rather lose thousands of disabled customers business and have a few hundred be strong armed into buy genie+ than provide them with the free benefits they need. I keep scowering the news waiting for an incident where a guest faints in line or worse, but I haven’t seen anything yet. Most likely because most disabled people do not want to take that risk or support Disney so they’re simply not going. Trust me I’ve always felt indebted to my parents for taking care of me despite them never asking me to pay them back.
      I don’t even have a social platform, I just leave comments so I imagine you get way worse. I’ve seen so many hateful things be repeated like “stay home!”, “If you’re fat and lazy you shouldn’t get das”, “stop whining, get a wheelchair, and wait in line like everyone else” or “If you want equality then wait in line like everyone else and don’t ask for special treatment”. I expected these kinds of talking points from conservative fans who hate Disney thinking it’s woke but weirdly enough I didn’t get any hate for voicing my opinions on clownfish tv videos. Everywhere else even wdw news today I’m met with hate and told to keep quiet. It boils my blood but leaving Disney is probably for the best. Their services suck these days and only appeal to execs. The 200 dollar ticket is only truly worth it if you have das. Knowing Disney I highly doubt they’re going to reverse this change certainly not in the next few years. But like I said we’re fortunate to have universal and even Tokyo Disney has a form of disability pass similair to universal since they’re not owned by Disney. So we can save our money and go there instead.

I am with yiu about dying on this hill cause Disney is saying that we don’t won’t you here. I would say the system was abused I have heard people at guest service s saying things that are not a disability to get the pass as well as people getting wheelchairs that so t need them just to get the pass. So a small group of people ruined it for those of us that really need it/

      Thank you for taking the time to comment. We might try Universal when we get back to Orlando in the next few months.
      There is absolutely no data supporting the DAS was being abused argument. For a long time now all lines have been accessible to wheelchairs, so that wouldn’t get you one on the old system. The executives wanting more money is not a reason to hurt people.

Ive had heat exhaustion and fell over in line due to heat in line, at no time do i then think i need special treatment because of my heat intolerance. If it wasn't for all the people abusing the system, then people who really need it would still have it.

    I dont disagree that the executives are greedy and just want more money. But to say that is the only peope to be mad at is ridiculous. You should be most mad at the idiots who abused the system. You even said that anyone could get DAS for any reason..and they did..there were videos all over the internet tell people what to claim to get DAS. Ive personally seen people at the parks laughing about using it. Its about time they did something about it! I would rather they just require an actual medical diagnosis, but i understand they dont want to be responsible for dealing with that.
    If you dont think that there was a problem, you either haven't been paying attention or are one of the abusers.

      Thanks for taking the time to comment. Again, as we have said in many comments and in the video prove people are abusing the system. Disney has made no press release stating that was the reason for the change. If they had proof, wouldn’t they come out with the evidence to squash all the resistance? The thing is they don’t have it. It is 100% on greedy executives.
      As I stated in another comment, Chapek changed the measurement from revenue per day, for the parks, to individual spend per visit to make the numbers look better to shareholders. The parks are struggling and they see those with disability as a golden goose. Don’t buy the bs supporting those who hoard everything. Stand with those who need accommodations to enjoy the park.

    Well, really, it all comes down as to whether or not your disability affects your tolerance or intolerance for waiting (not standing, waiting) in a regular line for a long period of time. Disney just hasn't made that clear enough, until now. I also think it's unfair to blame it all on money making, because if that's all Disney ever wanted, then they would just get rid of DAS altogether, but obviously they can't. The reason why they list autism as an example, is because a lot of people with disabilities who can't wait in a queue for a long period of time is because there might be too many people talking a little too loud all at once, that it's just too much for the individual's brain to comprehend. Now it's different when you're only doing just the usual 5-20 mins in places like shops and all that, but asking a person with a developmental disability to wait in a queue for hours and hours, that's asking too much of them. That's why they need DAS.
    Now all this is most commonly found in developmental disabilities, like autism, down syndrome or ADHD
    My advice would be, when it comes to registering with a cast member, be very specific as to why you can't wait in line for a long period of time. Try explaining to them what happened the last time you waited in a queue for hours and hours, and how DAS would really help you. Also, delving deeper in regards to your condition could actually help too. Now, I know it's too personal for some, but as I always say, it doesn't have to be

      Thank you for taking the time to comment. As to your first point as a theme park and defined under the American’s with Disabilities Act they are legally required to have accommodations. Therefore, they cannot get rid of the system completely, which is why it is still given to some. It gives them a legal out and after they deter or exhaust those who need it, they hope those people give up trying.
      As for the feeling it’s not about the money, then why are so many people who need accommodations being told to purchase Genie +? That’s all Disney wants is a high spend per visit. Check out any of their earnings calls. Chapek changed the reporting metric to shareholders to this during his term as CEO and it has not changed back. Prior it was overall revenue per day. With diminishing numbers at their parks they got to make up those loses.
      Even look at the stories of some who were told to use other means in the park on the interview and spent hours of their day convincing cast members at the park of what they were told on the call (i.e. return to line). They want to make it so difficult people give up the fight but they will still have an option, so they can deter people from suing them and defend themselves in court.
      As for explaining one’s condition, if you search any social media platform you can see that is not working. Disney has not only failed those who need accommodations but continues to discriminate based on unknown criteria because even those with autism have been rejected. To top it all off you need to buy a ticket prior to them letting you know you don’t meet their hidden criteria.
      Again, we have to say it doesn’t make sense why we can’t come together and fight for each other. People with so little always protecting those who hoard so much.

      @@LostGirlinTomorrowlandI'm sorry you feel that way. As for those with autism who have been rejected, that's likely due to the individual failing to give the cast member enough information, or they just ended up with an arrogant cast member. If it's the latter, then I'd try again another day and hopefully with another cast member who actually knows what they're doing. But, if they get rejected again, then I'd ask the cast member to put them through to a health expert who definitely knows what they're doing

    I would say one of the reasons of the changes were based on your video from several years ago. You basically gave a road map for anyone who wanted to abuse the system. I know you probably had the best intentions, by showing how the process went, you should not have videoed what/why you are granted the pass. Your free to post almost anything you like but abusers will always abuse systems and anyone could restate the exact things you said to the CM.

      Thanks for taking the time to comment. So let me get this straight. You think these changes have nothing to do with the executives wanting more money? It’s frustrating how those with so little are always so quick to protect those hoarding everything.
      Also, as we said in the video there is no evidence people misused the system. None what so ever. Only thing people have cited, was from another content creator who counted the blue circles when someone went through the lightning lanes, which is neither reliable nor valid. If someone brought me that study, as a person with a Ph.D., they would be laughed out the building for lack of any use of the scientific method or understanding of how to do research.

      @@LostGirlinTomorrowland I think the existence of influencers getting das passes and what they said to get it, even though fraudulent shows how easy it had become to deceive the process. I never once said anything about revenue or finances. During the last lawsuit that was made public, utilization records were divulged. I'm guessing over the next several years there will be lawsuits and I'm sure the utilization records will be requested. But going back in time, the GAC system turned into being very abused as it was easy to get with just a mobility aid that was just 11 years ago. People were selling their access. I have personally seen abuse, and I personally reported an individual who was selling his access to das inviting 5 people to join him through a DM on facebook, that was just August of 2023. I just looked up the email I sent. All fraud hurts the disabled community. All I'm saying, is there was abuse of the system. Too what extent I cannot say. But to say there was no abuse or even just minor abuse is not genuine. The other thing that is over looked a lot is, there are three types of people who were getting das pre changes, the abusers, the true disabled and a third group who have conditions that still could wait in lines but were given das. That third group were not defrauding the system, but they also didn't need the das accommodations. They may need other accomodations or maybe they dont need anything but das was given so protect the frontline CM's. The main reason it was taken to virtual chats only was to protect CM's. Since really the pandemic or maybe even before, people have gotten entitled and embolden to lash out at anything they deem negative to themselves. There are countless stories where CM's were being threatened after denying individuals. I'm guessing if Disney released data or if they even keep it, the amount of denials since 2020 or 2021 were way down. I know thats speculation but DAS was given for almost any reason the last few years. However, none of this takes away from the disabled community who truly need accommodations. I have seen over the last few weeks more and more positive stories coming out through FB groups. Disney will weed through this and fix it like they did in 2013 when they changed to DAS from GAC. That change caused all mobility users to lose their accommodations. They are also disabled, but it came out fine. Now it's like we have forgotten about that and think Disney is somehow anti disabled person. Thats just false, its just once videos were released showing how to get it, how can Disney combat the fraud?

      Not very caring of you. First, that is not Disney’s process to show proof. That would be against the ADA, whether they like it or not and they do have to comply with federal law. The hullabaloo is because people can get hurt or worse if they do not get accommodations. And those who need accommodations have the right to enjoy the park just like those who do not.
