  • I recorded this video back in March when quarantine first began, but I forgot to upload it! Here I show you how to play one of my favourite songs on guitar, "Alesund" by Sun Kil Moon, from "Admiral Fell Promises" (2010). This song taught me so much about guitar playing, and I hope it can help you learn some new things!
    This is my first time making a long form video like this, and I had no idea how hard it was going to be. I have a newfound respect for serious CZcamsrs after making this!

    Awesome man! you are incredible! you would be the best guitar teacher. I've self-taught myself guitar and singing since a kid but I have never really improved with my music because I have never committed to any lessons. I stopped playing and singing for a few years now, but now I am more motivated to pick up lessons and improve. I've definitely missed the self-healing that playing music gives. I'm getting the hang of this already in 2 days but the triplet is very difficult, especially trying to sing and play the triplet at the same time. Thank you Sensei!🐱‍👤

    • @patienthands
      @patienthands  Před rokem

      Thanks for your comment Dylan. I was self-taught as well. Didn't take a lesson til I was 26. It certainly helped, but I only had a few sessions. My playing dramatically improved when I got myself a hand-made guitar. You can hear and feel everything so much better with a nice instrument. It wasn't expensive, it was less than an intro Taylor. But anyway. I guess I find you just have to approach guitar with curiosity, to keep your interest. And along the way you develop your own set of first principles; your own method.

      @@patienthands only thing I have problems with are the triplets... most traditional fingerpicking comes naturally to me, or maybe I've just got it down by learning a lot of folk fingerstyle tunes from artists like Jansch , Kottke, Fahey ,etc.. ya know how it usually alternates back and forth from thumb to finger. but the triplets really just don't register with me... Any suggestions, tips, or exercises for getting over this? also isn't the "part we all want to learn this song for" literally constant triplets all on one string? do you play it thumb pointer middle ring? or backwards? like ring finger, middle, pointer? sorry i know this is a long comment. I guess I'm not so much concerned with how to play the song tab wise that all makes sense to me in my head. Its just the right hand that baffles me.

    • @patienthands
      @patienthands  Před 3 lety +1

      @@beemelonhead1 Okay so the actual tremolo picking on the 1st string, is strictly speaking not a triplet. You strike the string 4 times, first thumb, then ring, then middle, then index. Start slow. Play it gently, with the very tips of your fingers. It's easier on a nylon string if you have access to one. If this part is still giving you a hard time I suggest you look up a tutorial for tremolo picking for classical guitar. The triplets in the 'fun part' are the same as those in the verse. Are you struggling with the ones in the verse as well? Just think about picking 3 eighth notes in the time it usually takes to pick 2. And they are played thumb, index, ring. You can practice this right hand only on whichever strings you like. Just pluck them quickly in ascending order. Mute the strings with your left hand. So you only focus on your right. Do this at various speeds until it becomes second nature. I hope this helps!

    I’ve discovered that the tremolo still sounds off here and I was able to figure out what Mark is doing to get the sound he gets. He’s actually using the high e and b string. It’s hard to explain by text but you have the proper notes here you just need to also pick the b string with your thumb. Make a d minor shape starting at the 8th freight (you don’t need your middle finger here though, just your pointer and ring finger. Pointer on e string 8th fret, ring on b string 10th fret). Hold this position as you go up and down the neck using your thumb to pick the b string and your other three fingers to tremolo the e string. Hope this is helpful.

    • @patienthands
      @patienthands  Před 3 lety

      If I've understood correctly, you just fret two frets higher on the b string and play thumb on b and fingers on e string?

    • @VidTrent
      @VidTrent Před 3 lety

      @@patienthands Correct, they will be the same note which allows the b string to sustain while striking the e string with your, i, m, a fingers. Try it out, I would like to know your thoughts, while tuning down to how he plays it and playing along, I’m convinced that this is how he’s doing it.
      So, trying to be as clear as possible, starting position: pointer finger on the e string, 8th fret, ring finger on the b string, 10th fret then work your way up and down the frets.

      Hi Tuomas, thanks for your comment! So I just tried the song this morning. I figured out a tuning that kind of works? From the bottom up:
      D-G-C-F-#-A-B
      The bass notes for the first verse are like this:
      4th fret 5th string, 2nd fret 4th string,
      4th fret 5th string, 4th fret 4th string, 6th fret 4th string, 4th fret 5th string.
      You can play a chord that sounds like his if you just play the bass note and play a triplet on strings 1 and 2 (you can also add 3) just like we did with Alesund :)
      Hope this helps!! Happy birthday to your Mom!

    Guitar related question to you: My D-string (4th) is perfectly fine, but when I add a capo, regardless of fret is is entirely off when played open. If I fret a note, it's fine too... just open it sounds off. Do you have any idea what has happened here? All other strings work fine with my capo.

    • @patienthands
      @patienthands  Před 9 měsíci

      are you playing with a radiused capo? Look down your fretboard and check out the curvature. Classical guitar capos will be flat. What it sounds like is probably too much tension on the capo in the centre. Otherwise, could be a bad fret. Or just general intonation issues, but if your other frets are fine them in not sure.

    • @patienthands
      @patienthands  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Here I am using the second finger, but nowadays I use the third. I don't think there is any principled reason to use either, just do what is most comfortable and or sounds the best.

    Hey man! I'm a lil confused by your wording when you say "7 7" and "12 10." like does 7 7 mean pluck the 7th fret on two strings at the same time? I'm kind of new to this and I don't get it. Could someone explain what he's saying? Thanks.

    • @patienthands
      @patienthands  Před 3 lety

      Yes and no. It's 7th fret 3rd string, and 7th fret 1st string, but you don't pick them at the same time. Then 12th fret 3rd string, 10th fret 1st string.

    For the triplets in the verse, are you doing 2-1-1 (in relation to the strings) or is it 3-2-1?
    Awesome tutorial, thanks!

    • @patienthands
      @patienthands  Před 3 lety

      Hey Matthew thanks for your question. If I have understood it correctly - the triplets are played on strings 5-2-1. I tried to teach this by showing the bass progression, 6-5-4, 6-5-4, or 6-5-4, 3-6-4. So when you play the bass progression with your thumb, try picking 2-1 just after the 5, or in the second pattern just after the 6.

      Hi Connor, I would recommend watching some classical guitar tutorials on tremolo. They will show you how to practice this. In the meantime, you can play it with fewer fingers and fewer strokes. Like when I learned this song, I used to just play it with my index and ring fingers.

    • @patienthands
      @patienthands  Před 11 měsíci

      Hi Simon, this is not a long-term solution to the problem but would it help you watched the video at 0.75x speed? Also, '6-5-2...' are the string numbers, yeah? Not the frets. 6 is the lowest string (by pitch), 2 is the highest. So the picking pattern is 6-5-2-1-4.
