Sun Kil Moon - Duk Koo Kim [Remastered]
This video is for educational purposes! I've long thought Kozelek's albums sound very dull and vanilla. With this video I wanted to show what the tinniest amount of tweaking from an amateur working on headphones at a cafe could do to the sound. Basically, I EQed the bass, kick drum, and symbols using selective EQ curves and shelves. I knew the key of the song so I could work with and around the fundamental frequencies. I did some mid-side processing to further bring out the Portuguese guitars and general electric guitar overdubs that seem to get a bit lost in the mix. Then I boosted the odd harmonics with a special mastering distortion tool before sending everything to a final, fairly gentle, output compressor. The whole edit took me about 20 minutes.
Try A/Bing this version with another clip of the standard version to hear the differences. Let me know what you think in the comments below! If people like the results I can do more of these.

Slow Electronic Music // Stacking Delays in Eurorack

Making some live modular techno, or 'dark ambient,' or whatever you want to call this! The composition is rather sparse and the clock rate is slow, so I'm stacking delays as a compositional tool. I just got the Doepfer A-188-1D BBD delay, and I'm using that in combination with the Strymon Magneto to create rhythmic delays, and indeed, chords, out of an initial monophonic sequence. Ambient Acoustic Guitar no.2 // Guitar Improvisation

An old roommate recently commented on how he fondly remembers hearing me play guitar at night. I thought I'd start recording and uploading the little improvisations I play for myself each day. Ambient Classical Guitar no.1

Erik Satie first anticipated ambient music with his 'furniture music' in 1917. I spent my late teens and early twenties making electronic ambient music, but as my guitar playing evolved, I realized what I was listening for was sustain, silence, and the space between notes. When I play for myself, I often play one or two notes of a chord and just listen to the sympathetic resonances of the other...

    Guitar related question to you: My D-string (4th) is perfectly fine, but when I add a capo, regardless of fret is is entirely off when played open. If I fret a note, it's fine too... just open it sounds off. Do you have any idea what has happened here? All other strings work fine with my capo.

    • @patienthands
      @patienthands Před 10 měsíci

      are you playing with a radiused capo? Look down your fretboard and check out the curvature. Classical guitar capos will be flat. What it sounds like is probably too much tension on the capo in the centre. Otherwise, could be a bad fret. Or just general intonation issues, but if your other frets are fine them in not sure.

      I always play Zavarez hard tension or extra hard tension strings. They have slightly textured trebles, which makes the guitar sound like a guitar, and not a plonky kids ukelele. Seriously, those strings resuscitated my interest in classical guitar.

      Hi Simon, this is not a long-term solution to the problem but would it help you watched the video at 0.75x speed? Also, '6-5-2...' are the string numbers, yeah? Not the frets. 6 is the lowest string (by pitch), 2 is the highest. So the picking pattern is 6-5-2-1-4.

      Do you know how to read tablature? It's an alternative to traditional music reading. Basically, the 6th to 1st strings are depicted horizontally, and then the numbers, e.g. "7" indicate the fret position on that string. One advantage of tablature is that since we're in an alternate tuning here, it's much more intuitive to read than the same piece would be on a traditional score. Since in the latter case the musician would have to adjust their mental map of the fretboard to account for the different tuning.
