- The open-world genre has been one of the most prominent ones in gaming, and for good reason. This medium relies on giving players a sense of escapism, and what better way to provide that than letting them loose in a virtual world that’s filled with opportunities and possibilities?
We have experienced a ton of great open-world games in recent years, and here are 30 of the best of all time. - Hry
nothing will ever beat the rdr2 open world, just the detailing of everything including graphics, npcs, multiple things to do and just the small details is on a level above anything else
Since playing RDR2, every other game now sucks. It truly is one of the best games ever made.
Gore on rdr2 is so bad tlou2 beats rdr2 so easy in gore
RDR2, Witcher 3, GTA V and Elden Ring are just on another level.

First one is iconic but the second one was so boring and ugly to me
What a list! I'm in the minority that actually likes Death Stranding, and there's so many I've yet to crack open. Honorable mention to Days Gone!
RDR2 fulfills one of my many childhood dreams of being a cowboy, while Black Flag fulfills another dream of being a pirate, and Ghost of Tsushima a samurai, and GTA series you get to run free as a one man terror.
i recommend horizon zero dawn the story is chefs kiss
LOVE Days Gone
Death stranding may have great graphics, but I get extremely bored playing it and I might vomit, because this is never a game for me. I don't like to spend time producing something in games. And it would be very boring to hang out alone on a wasteland planet. I just came across it in the video, I liked that it fights different creatures.
FC2 was a an excellent game and I can't believe that it's 14 years ago since I was burning grass and fields down in the dead of night to show them who was the Daddy, as I watched from a distance. Loved that game!
If a new Far Cry game was produced with today's modern technology, which has the same Far Cry 2 mechanics, physics and artificial intelligence, I'm sure this game would be one of the best games.
Now this is what you call a need to play list! Amazing games
Open World Games are the epitome of gaming. Most of it contains almost all aspect of Video Gaming Genres such as Puzzles, Platformers, RPG, Action, Adventure, Beat em' Ups, Shooters, FPS, Tactics, Simulation, Stealth, and Many more. It could be the epitome of Single Player gaming with many games have Multiplayer functionality.
They lack good story structure and meaningful character development but they have the best exploration !
Kingdom Come: Deliverance should be on the list. A beautiful recreation of an actual historical medieval setting with some really beautiful scenery and realistic sword fights with parries, feints, etc. (not your usual button-smashing hack-and-slash fare). It got a lot of flak for being buggy when it first came out, but for the most part those issues have been dealt with. And with the DLCs you could literally spend a couple of hundred hours of gameplay (or more, if you just want to get lost in the woods!).
L.A. Noire should also be on the list for being a rather faithful recreation of late-1940s Los Angeles. So much so that if you're an Angelino and are familiar with some of the older L.A. landmarks, you can spot them in the game and use them as navigation aids. The odd interrogation mechanics can be a source of frustration, but it definitely deserves to be played at least once.
Agreed
Lol, how KCD didnt make it on this list really is a miracle xD

Excellent list. Thank you very much!
Far cry 2 was so good, I’ll never forget when a companion got downed enough they’d die because the morphine doesn’t work and you just comfort them in their final moments
I agree!!!
Im actually of the very unpopular opinion that ALL of the FarCry games were awesome!!!
I havent played the first one but I really enjoyed 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, New Dawn, and Primal.
ALL were amazing to me but youre right, #2 was special.
@@sanniwartinen3595 Far cry 1 is way different than the other ones. Imagine call of duty 1 with mutants and being little harder. It's very linear game.
you should add timestamps, and also mention publishing date of the games
Fallout3, New vegas, San andreas, GTA5, RDR2, Skyrim, Kingdom Come, Witcher 3, Saints Row 2 Morrowwind, Oblivion and BOTW. Can not Think of anyothers I would Put in the Top Tier of open worlds.
This video just made my day! 🎮💥 The diversity and creativity of these open world games are mind-blowing. So grateful for this list! 🙏😍
watch dogs 2 will always have a very dear place in my heart. When I finally saved up enough money from doing a paper round at 13, I bought my PS4, and a copy of the game. I lost myself for hundreds of hours In that game, completed the story twice and still occasionally play online 6 years later. Its such a fun game. Takes common concepts of open world games and puts a new spin on it with the whole hacking aspect. Being chased by police? hack traffic lights, stuff like that. Its just a shame watch dogs legion wasn't that good. I would recommend watch dogs 2 to anybody.
I played Watch Dogs 2 for a long time until I learned and memorized it completely. At first, I loved playing the game with much praise, but the repetition of the same thing bothered me and I don't like ubisoft npc's at all because they all look alike and When you go into too much detail, you see that NPCs are too artificial and robot-like. The game has very nice details, but the missions are always repetitive and the missions are always similar to each other and you get bored after a while. But the cops chasing you is nicer and harder than GTA 5. The only reason Watch dogs Legion is bad is because it was designed in modern technological times like Cyberpunk 2077 and on a map that people don't like.
@@denizdenizz9663I have 100% completion on Watch Dogs 2 and have played the first game many times over, but never bought watch dogs legion due to the bad reviews. I have three questions (assuming you played it)
Is it worth playing? Is it anywhere near as fun as the 2nd game?Is it as bad as the reviews?
@@wind3692
Of course, I have all the games of the Watch Dogs series right now and I enjoy playing watch dogs Legion. Difference between Watch Dogs Legion and Watch dogs 2, Just like the difference between Ghost recon Breakpoint and Wildlands. Watch Dogs Legion has better hacking and better graphics and you can do better activities with NPCs, And also Legion has excellent combat system. So you can fight with NPCs and cops and security guards like a fighting games. But there is don't have a such fighting feature in Watch Dogs 2, and you hit every Npc with only 1 punch and NPC's are dying, I don't like it. The reason people love Watch Dogs 2 is because the game map takes place in California-San Francisco and the game is in our era like GTA V. And the most loved and preferred map in games is the California map. The only reason Watch Dogs Legion is disliked is that this game was designed in the high-tech era like Cyberpunk 2077 and its map looks very stifling and boring. And one of the things I don't like in Legion is that All NPCs have similar facial structures. If the negatives I have mentioned are not important to you, then you can easily buy the game Legion.
@@wind3692it's great if you don't care abt storyline
Thanks for the details
I enjoyed what I have just seen... Thank you! You got yourself a newsubscriber. And I liked your video, too :_)))
Rockstar *’s GTA V and RDR2 game duo can go up against any other gaming company best 2 games. Those 2 games are absolutely legendary.
Eh Gta Vs campaign was kinda trash compared to 3, vice city, san andreas, and 4
Agreed!!!
Other GTAs and RDR#1 are also amazing as well!
Niko Bellic is my favorite GTA protagonist and I like GTA 4 story the best. I think GTA V all around is the best one. GTA is my favorite gaming franchise. Rockstar games are top tier. I’ll give them their flowers.
RDR2 is an absolute trash game.....it's a boring life simulator with good graphics, thats it
@@drunkhusband6257 to each their own
I'm glad PROTOTYPE got the recognition it deserved to be recommended in this video no matter what year it got released. Sadly, the devs didn't push far in this hidden gem of a game.
Meh didn't like it
@fedorsilva7687 no they didn't
Now that's what i call a good list!
Agreed. They listed the main big hitters.
This list clearly shows how few good open-world games are. My first introduction to open-world gaming was GTA 5 since I started gaming as an adult. It blew me away and set the standard I expected in any open-world game. RDR, Sleeping Dogs, Skyrim, The Witcher 3, RDR2, and Assasins Creed Syndicate were also enjoyable. I tried GTA 4 but playing it after GTA 5 was a mistake, the mechanics were not easy to get used to. Ubisoft open-worlds are generally poor and dull as well as the repetitive Just Cause games. At the end of the day, I feel most games are better off as linear experiences rather than massive open worlds that are empty and have repetitive missions with no depth.
same bro you should also play mafia 2. its also very good
Other games worth a mention:
Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Dragon's Dogma, Sunset Overdrive, Days Gone, Dead Rising 3, The Saboteur, Elex
Mad Max, State of Decay 2, Red Faction: Guerrilla, L.A. Noire, Destroy All Humans!, Outcast - Second Contact, Outward.
Days Gone might not be the best game for the PS4, but it is my favorite, that game deserved a sequel more than a lot of games that got one.
Are Fable, Dragon age and Mass effect games considered open world? and lego city undercover!!! :D
@@funkycatnip9187 Dragon Age Inq isn't exactly open-world but has big hub-areas and Mass Effect: Andromeda is similar. Fable isn't open world and I'm not familiar with Lego City.
Borderlands 2

For fantasy, the Witcher 3. Martial arts, Sleeping Dogs. For nostalgia, Shenmue. For samurai, Ghost of Tsushima. But my all time favourite, RDR2.

Kudos for including GTA IV. You could also add Gothic series to this list.
Im surprised you didnt mention that the nearly decade old Witcher 3 recieved a massive update and remaster/overhaul in Dec 2022 its amazing
To me an open world game is where you can play the game without doing any main story missions or side missions. You can just exist in the world. Some of these games you can't do that.
It's called sandbox
Its a crime that you dont have Dragons Dogma on this list. One of the best games ever, and hands down the coolest magic skills of all time. The combat is sooooo nice.
For me the game was sooooo boring and lifeless. Glad there are people who enjoy it though!
FFXV didn't make the list? it had flaws but also excelled in many aspects. To this day still the most beautiful openworld JRPG.
I just stopped playing after 12 hours or so. The story is totally headscratching and I got tired of grinding. It has pretty scenery. Nothing like Tsushima or RDR2 though.
No man’s sky is now one of my fav games ever, I can just forget about problems with a relaxing game like it

8) Batman Arkham Knight
9) Spiderman 2018

Shadow of War might be the most underrated game ever. The immersion is 11/10.
I have played most of these except for a handful and I plan on playing them also, great list, idk I might have to put odyssey over black flag though
Mercenaries 1 and 2 and Just Cause are the games that in my opinion kickstarted the open world genre in a more modern setting as opposed to the traditional might and magic style setting of games like The Elder Scrolls series but the original 'open world' games have to be Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 and System Shock. I put open world in quotes because they are all set indoors, apart from a few outdoor locations in UW2.
Just Cause 3>>>>
mercs 1 and 2 were brilliant.they dont make games like them no more which is a shame
My list of fave open world games ever...
*Red Dead #1
*Red Dead #2
*Witcher #3
*Oblivion ( better than Skyrim!)
*Horizon Zero Dawn
*Horizon Forbidden West
*GTA 5
*Farcry 5 and New Dawn

*Outer Worlds
I attempted to play Dying Light and it was just way to hard for me so I quit.. I may try again someday since my skills have since improved.
I have yet to play Death Stranding, Ghosts of Tsushima, Outer Wilds, or Days Gone yet but they are all on my list.
I am not a Spiderman fan but I keep hearing the game is great so I may give it a try but its last on my list..
In yalls opinion, would you say Spiderman would be an enjoyable game for someone who loves open world games but is not a Spiderman fan and knows nothing about Spiderman lore/universe?
Or would it be boring to me?

I would recommend Morrowind on PC or play it on Series X, it’s the most open world game you can play, you can do anything you want in the game, create your own spells, be anything you want etc.
What about Daggerfall or even Arena. Game worlds so large you could never uncover every single part!
@@B-A-L yes, those are good choices
It's so sad there was never a prototype 3. Such a good game imo.
Watchdogs 1 wasn’t underrated…It was overhyped.
Both.
Ubisoft games are shit
Very overhyped
It's a weird because it felt like both. So overhyped that when it launched people were disappointed it it didn't match the trailer that they didn't give it a fair chance regardless because after playing it, it was still pretty damn good
Incorrect, it's underrated. It was a fantastic game, didn't remotely look or play how Ubisoft advertised but it was a still a great game. The sequel's were shit BECAUSE they listened to idiots.
Assassins creed
Horizon zero dawn 1 & 2
Ghost of Tsushima
Cyberpunk
Witcher 3
Elden ring
Gtav/ red dead
Love list all great games but for me ghost recon wildlands is a must play also the narrative pull me in and AC origins played it twice and harder difficulty and I own over 100 games.
I agree Wildlands is amazing but personally I only found it enjoyable on the hardest difficulty with either limited or no hud and playing with my brother in coop.
As soon as I was left alone with 3 AI characters to command it just became so repetitive clearing out base after base.
The map design was absolutely fantastic though
I think Bannerlord, Astroneer, Corsairs (lost ships, i think, was latest), Rust and some more great open world sandboxes worth mentioning
One of the missions in watchdogs 2 that really stand out is were you wrench gets helped hostage and you have to get his mask while shooting your way through gangs members
Never finished it. I should reinstall it.
👍🔥great games
Great list just in my opinion San adreas, bully and mafia 2 are in top 30 too
I never played 3-5 but I watched elden ring playthrough and it seemed really cool.
Play WD2, go to Oakland, where I think it's called Elmhurst or something like that. It's the residential area with the 2 crescent streets (a-la Grove Street). The entire area is filled with gangs, you can spend hours messing around there, I've done it a lot.
Loved the prototype games
Well Odyssey, Origins and Valhalla should have been on the list to. Some of the listed games I could easily skip but if you love rpg open worlds You are in for a treat if you haven’t been playing those Assassins games.
And Days Gone.
Midsoft games

not putting down your opinion, but origins world was so empty(detailed no doubt) but 70 percent of it was just sand but at least the cities were nice, odyssey was just dogshit imho, copy paste everything, repetitive gameplay, useless collectibles(too many at that too), graphics were good but it's world, in my friends words was, " As huge as a sea but as shallow as a lake." valhalla I haven't played yet.
@@adamya1639 It’s not a perfect game but not a bad one either. Considering the age of the game it’s really good. I would say still better than most games released the last 3 years.
