If the centipede exclusive portion seems a little barren compared to the red centipede part, it's because the red centipede part was the only part I actually cared about making. There could be a bulk lizards video next? Expect it to take as long as this one.
Only took... five months since the last one. I'm very good at this, as you can tell! By the way, just to rub salt in the wound, I've had that red centipede footage since August 2022. About half of the footage in this video is pre-downpour, and half of it is post.

That one red centipede in the hunter campaign guarding the red centipede unlock for sandbox was a pain to get through

It's nice hearing someone concretely say things you've only just been fuzzily feeling out. I've always understood centipedes have kinda funny vision -- y'know the classic getting trapped in a pit with a red centi and it being unable to kill you, and just ignores you as long as you stand still -- But it makes sense realizing they have movement based vision
spore puffs can be hard to come by in regions where red centipedes hang out, buuuuut, mushrooms usually aren't nearly as difficult to find, so if you're playing gourmand, you can whip up a few puffs just like that
Quick Correction:
Normal Centipedes actually DO have armor! It just isn't strong enough to block the full damage from a spear! If you hit a part of a centipede that still has the plates on them, it deals much less damage than hitting an exposed area! If you want to kill a centipede super quickly, aim for the un-armored bits because it deals more damage... Though, in practice, that's easier said than done, so it might just be easier to spam spears.
You can actually see that happening in the clip at 2:30 -- the centipede flinches a lot more when I hit an unarmored segment.
So, very true! I didn't mention it because I don't know how much of a practical difference it makes compared to just "beating them to death indiscriminately."

Quick note(s):
Aquapedes are considerably powerful despite having limited locomotion, pretty much having perma-water shock damage since they are literal aqua centipedes. Best way to kill one is to get one as close to land as possible and absolutely beat it to death. Luckily they aren’t very fast, and a jetfish or a simple obstacle can be used to bypass one.
Centiwings are pretty mid, in terms of difficulty. They pretty much just are adult centipedes with wings. Although they do have one trait that sets them apart: actual eyes. Centiwings do not have to rely on movement to detect you, and just watch you form a relatively close range. They are also passive, and have a strange behavior where you have to stay in their sights for long enough for them to begin to give chase.
From what I remember, Centiwings actually start out being afraid of the player, before gradually losing that fear and beginning to hunt them

Yeah if you just beat the crap out of aquapedes by repeatedly stabbing them it usually works out fine. Problem is when you accidentally throw your spear the wrong way and then get shocked immediately

Fun fact. Every centipede type can be eaten as non carnivores slugcats. Monk, survivor, and rivulent can eat centipedes like they are hunt or arti. And gourmand doesn’t get half food pipes from eating them

my favorite way to kill centipedes is actually unmentioned here: gravity and a free falling gourmand
they can also charge your electric spears and yes even the red boi
I've been playing this game for four years now and have never noticed that the second head has to connect for a shock! what a cool detail, and one I will be exploiting the shit out of 👁👁
My first playthrough as Monk I absolutely hated the Centipedes, they blocked my path to the depths and my only way to get pass them where to kill or just hope they moved out of the way, you couldn’t really get away much once ur grabbed, they don’t let go even if i spear them.
they changed how centipedes work in the update that came with downpour.
before, they used to drop you immediately when you hit them with something but now sometimes they don’t care and will kill you anyways

People are pretty goofy at naming creatures, I’m assuming the first person that saw a centipede didn’t only scream in fear, but also decided that the unsettling amount of legs it had was worthy of the name (centi)pede. Same goes for millipedes.
Small/Baby centipedes can shock you if you hold onto them too long and not eat them stunning you and possibly killing any other utility animal you may have nearby.(Squidcada)((I think?))

I was going through a shortcut tunnel and on the other side I waited cuz lizards were nearby. A red centipede shot out of the tunnel I was in, both heads ready to grab me. It scared me but I laughed, I couldn't even be mad, it was just ready to kill me lmao

Best way to kill a centipide: play sporecat (i do know that it wasn't out in the workshop at this time but hey its still effective!)

Red centipedes aren't a tremendous threat to the spearmaster. You can cheese them using horizontal pipes; hide in a pipe and make spears, throw them at it and retreat into the pipe. If it gives chase, run back through the pipe. Repeat this process until the centipede starts running away.
Fun fact: I originally wanted to get clips of killing red centipedes as Hunter, and completely ate shit every time. A year later downpour comes out, and I go down there as Spearmaster, and kill the thing twice in a row. Spearmaster is kinda busted, you guys.

I remembered that gourmand is no slouch either, as they only need a batfly and two rocks to make a spore puff.
I actually didn't know that the centipedes shock by grabbing you with both heads. I always thought it was just on a random timer after they grab you...
my tip is: aim for the heads, when they try to get you just slap em in there with a spear, and use the top pole cheesing and stop moving to not attract them
There is way more to centipede sizes
Smaller "adult" centipedes will avoid you and if small enough cant kill you with shock
bigger "adult"s can be neutral or even agressive
you can kill reds and overgrowns with a single good spore puff throw

update: i beat the game. i’m now playing with room rando and now pipeyard is just a party trick to me.

Worth mentioning that Cherrybombs may fail to prevent your death if you throw them shortly before being grabbed.
Grabbing Centipedes only respond to instances of Cherrybombs being thrown, while they only respond to the explosions themselves otherwise.
Holy shit! How'd you figure out that part about centipedes seeing you based on movement?? That completely changes things! I'd assumed you just had to stay out of sight.
If you are playing as hunter, it is surprizingly easy to kill a red, just crouch near its head, make sure it is in a straight line, then use first spear to knock off the shell, then just stab it repeatedly. It is as easy as that. It does not make the subterranean centipede easier, because there are too much smaller ones, and the terrain is too rough
I killed a red centipede with gourmand in the campaign and in challenge mode with literally only one spore puff.
as long as most of their body touches the spore cloud one spore puff is more than enough
How did i not realise that theyre completeting a circuit to shock you
yoou forgot to mention that in the remix menu you cna enable something that lets you struggle out of centipede grasps as long as you spam the movement buttons (this isnt a mod, there IS a mod that lets you struggle out of all grasps but to my knowledge the built in remix setting only effects centipedes and maybe monster kelp/pole plants??)

I personally fiound centis essier to kill than lizards. Killed a red centipedede first try on a survivor campaign on my first playthrough. Yes it was above a weirs ledge, yes it was semi-stuck

should I try to kill a red centipede or aquapede for the gourmand food quest? And how many spore puffs does it take to kill the red centipede?
I def recommend red centi, aquas are hard to fight. What I did was craft a singularity bomb to kill a red centipede and eat it, it’s pretty easy to make with the abundance of karma flowers that spawn in industrial.
Would a fire egg also work? They are easier to make than singularity bombs.
You will need multiple fire eggs to kill red centipedes. Don't ask me how I know. Just use a singularity bomb (there's a spot in the outskirts side of industrial with two karma flowers really close by) or make a couple spore puffs.
I’m trying to get the one In subterranean. It says on the wiki fire eggs do 57 damage, and reds have 9 health.
The first time I ever fought a red centipede I messed around so much in arena with lizards, that I did the spear strategy first try, successfuly, red centipedes are still stronger than king vultures tho (i killed one in 37 seconds)
While i know this focuses more on regular slugcats gourmand has an even "easier" way to kill red centipides. Singularity bombs. Since gourmand can craft them which i noticed is easier then i thought if you use the wiki you essentially gave a garanteed easy kill as long as you know how to throw stuff properly and have an emidiate exit pipe to not get sucked in yourself. It is how i completed my food quest with the red centipide
or an even easier way using gourmand : crafting a spore puff
Using singulo bomb on a Red Centi is incredibly wasteful and kind of dangerous. I guess you could do it if you found a pop corn plant and a karma flower though.
@@bartudundar3193 Its not that wasteful as there arent that many other situations where one is even needed. Plus if you stay near a pipe to not die its a garanteed kill

@justarandomguy983 during which you can both lose the red centi or get killed. Plus, running from room to room, there is a higher chance of other creatures killing you while the bomb is a one hit immediate kill, after which you only have to go back to shelter to save. And idk why ppl find crafting the bomb so hard, i literally did it on the side while doing my normal run to the expanse.
