For Retropie users who may be wondering; this DOES also back up your roms, input settings, save states, etc! And if you're doing this to move up to a bigger SD card, make sure that, after writing the image to the bigger card and putting it into your Pi, you also go into Raspi-Config > Advanced Options > Expand File System. Otherwise Retropie will still think you're using the smaller SD card from the image, and won't recognize the extra space on the bigger card!

Thanks Pal! Out of the thousands of videos on this process, your instruction was the only one that made sense to me! Step by step as if you had never done this before was perfect! A lot of instructional videos cut corners or omit content that the creator feels is trivial or already known and that is usually what loses people.

Hey there, not entirely sure. Did you use the same type of sd card? Even though it may be the same posted capacity different brands can have different actual capacity on them. If you went over the amount of space available it could cause issues like this. For example a sandisk 256gb card doesn't have the exact same capacity as a samsung 256gb card. They are generally close but not exact.

I did the default format on the Samsung sd and cleared it out, planning on just trying to write it again but now I’m getting an “access denied” error message. So I’m at a real loss now. I’m guessing it might have something to do with the original sd card having two drives on it? It has a D and an E drive. The D is labeled emulac and the E is labeled games. Hello, me again.
I usedmy SD card the other day in my retropie device and it worked just fine. After I came home that evening, I tried it again, but it would not read my card. I had put it in so that I could finally set up my Wi-Fi after I got my keyboard figured out as I mentioned in your other video, but I was given the repetitive flashing green light so it was not reading upon boot.
I had previously written the image to my SD card, and then thought to copy the files over to an external hard drive just in case the SD card failed.
Not wanting to deal with any boot issues, tonight I went to rewrite the card and my Windows computer just died, and I don't believe the writing process had finished, although it may have as I was nearly done. Would I simply be able to format the card once again and then pull those previously saved files from my external hard drive over onto the SD card? It's a $512 gig image, but it's telling me that it's only 50 something megabytes? I had noticed that previously as well, does it expand once it's in the machine?
Thanks for any help, I'm also in search of a new computer if you have any recommendations. I was previously using a 2007 HP pavilion DV9000 running Windows Vista so it's had a good run, looking for something with a disc drive if they still make those, or at least one that could support an external one. I have a lot of CDs and DVDs as well. I'd previously bought in a Google chromebook, but that's also at the end of its life for updates, and I'm not happy with that ecosystem simply because everything is so ephemeral. I am not looking to buy a mac.
Again, thanks for all the help you've given so far.

A quick question, When dealing with larger cards than 32gb, Windows will not allow you to format a card in FAT32 . Isn't it necessary for the card to be "FAT32" formatted in order for the Raspberry Pi 4 B to be able to read and use it? I have used Guiformat in order to format a larger card to FAT32... is this necessary? If so... a great " update idea" for a future video!
