  • Gary Burghoff starred as Walter "Radar" O'Reilly in the 1972 television adaption of the 1968 novel "MASH" by author Richard Hooker. It wouldn't be long before the television show would be a smash hit and, years later, be known as one of the most beloved tv shows of all time. In this video, I ask the question, "Was Gary Burghoff the best actor on MASH?" and discuss how one of the show's main characters made just that argument. Thanks for watching! #MASH #radar #garyburghoff

I'm a big fan of M*A*S*H*. I don't want to pinpoint any one actor as "the best" this was definitely an ensemble cast & everyone, in my opinion, was equally great & brought something unique to the cast!!! 👍👍🙂

If I had to pick the best actor it would be Loretta Swit. She was able to take her character from a one dimensional bimbo to a multifaceted woman without missing a beat! I did like Radar but at times I found him to be a little annoying and that is not what you get from great actors.I will always love MASH and all of the incredible actors who made it such a joy to watch. Great video Stephen!

That's just it....they all had memorable scenes that cemented them onto our heart. The magic of all good shows is to get you to genuinely care for someone who doesn't really exist. It's pure gold for any actor, sometimes like radar you get loved on for the rest of your life

Tough choice. Gary Burghoff did a great job, sure. But each time I think of each actor I start to think it was them. David Ogden Stiers was flawless as always. Mike Farrell seemed completely natural. Alan Alda... well, he chewed the scenery a bit but he was undeniably good all the same. I feel like Jamie Farr doesn't get enough credit, tbh. The different angles he had to play from over the years is staggering. And when he did a serious scene, he crushed it. Plus I respect him for deciding to stop wearing ladies' clothing so his kids wouldn't get made fun of in school. Whether or not modern sensibilities think that should have been necessary is moot. He didn't mind wearing the stuff himself but stopped for his kids. Not every actor would do that.

Great video! I guess everyone on the show felt like they needed a lovable introvert. Gary Burghoff was a good actor though he played the role of Radar O'Reilly well, the death of Lt. Col. Henry Blake still stays with me as one of the saddest and most heartbreaking moments in TV history. (Fun fact: Burghoff didn't want to film the scene where Radar announced Blake's death, due to true emotionality. He was told he had to. It was beautifully acted, I was utterly devastated, and I still cry when I see it today.) Thanks so much for sharing, Steve, and keep on doing more of your M*A*S*H related content. 👍🏻 I have a personally random suggestion for you. Can I please suggest you do a "Whatever Happened To..." video on Brett Butler, the controversial star of the 1993-98 ABC sitcom Grace Under Fire, in the near future?

Gary and McLean were such a great team the first three seasons. They had such strong chemistry and played off of each other perfectly. I don’t care for how they wrote Radar in his later seasons, but’s on the writers and producers, not Gary.
Alan Alda may get all the credit, but I’ve always felt the majority of the supporting cast were the ones who really carried the show and made it so great. My vote for best actor on the show goes to David Ogden Stiers. I prefer the Blake/Trapper seasons overall, but Charles is one of my most favorite actors and pretty much the only reason why I watch any episodes past Season 4. The only weak spot, in my opinion, is Mike Farrell. I think Alda is definitely overrated.

Ahoy S.S!! I noticed one of the comments was from big brother Mr.Dave, who said another great video Steve! I must say I agree wholeheartedly!! I think I've commented on every one of your M*A*S*H videos. I don't know if that means I'm a M*A*S*H junkie or a Steven Sundstrom video junkie?! I guess a bit of both! I loved McLean Stevenson as Henry Blake, and if he says Gary Burghoff was the best actor, I'm not gonna argue with him!! I know you can certainly see an evolution of Radar, and I would like to think that was all Gary! That O.R. scene when Radar gave his infamous speech was a double whammy! We had just heard we lost Henry, but what we didn't know was we had simultaneously lost Trapper!! When Radar walked in the O.R. to give the speech, Trapper told him to put on a mask. Those were the last words Trapper ever said!!!🇺🇲📺🎬🤕😷🪨🍸🍻🩺🎙📢🚑🚁🪂🪖⛑️🧸🎎🇰🇷

My personal opinion is that none of the cast really stretched their acting repertoire very far; they all played themselves stuck in a situation comedy centered on an army hospital during the Korean War. If I had to make a choice it would be Alan Alda. His character was undeniably the celestial body which all the other characters orbited around.

Hello there. How's it going? Well, it's been a while since I last commented on one of your wonderful videos. I have an answer to your question here. Yes, Gary Burghoff was one of the best actors on M*A*S*H. Sadly, it was a very sad moment when Gary Burghoff left M*A*S*H way too soon in 1979 after the show's seventh season because of a burnout as well as a desire to spend more time with his family. However, he did return during the show's following season to film a special two-part farewell episode titled "Goodbye, Radar". Here is the thing. When Gary Burghoff had informed the producers of M*A*S*H about his decision to leave the show, the original idea was to have Corporal Walter "Radar" O'Reilly's departure take place off-screen as they had done with Captain "Trapper" John McIntyre and Major Frank Burns but Gary Burghoff had requested that he be allowed to return for one last time which resulted in that special two-parter. In a reflection of the ambiguity and regret that Gary Burghoff had likely felt, Radar was of course very torn about leaving his friends behind at that famous 4077th unit. Basically, the season 8 of M*A*S*H was a pivotal one because the departure of Corporal Walter "Radar" O'Reilly had meant the loss of an irreplaceable main character. Gary Burghoff was offered $4 million dollars to stay on the show but it was not enough to entice his return. Had he accepted, then he would been among the top three highest-paid TV stars in 1980 but still well behind Alan Alda who earned $5.4 million dollars that year. Gary Burghoff was the only M*A*S*H regular not to be replaced as Jamie Farr's main character Corporal Maxwell Klinger replaced Radar on the show. Even though Maxwell Klinger became the new company clerk following Radar's discharge, he was also promoted from Corporal to Sergeant and that was where he began to take his duties more seriously after giving up attempts at Section 8 discharge. The rest of the M*A*S*H main characters were all in good hands ever since Corporal (later Sergeant) Maxwell Klinger was appointed the new company clerk even though they were very sad about Radar leaving them. Basically, M*A*S*H had matured considerably beyond the wisecracking tropes of a typical sitcom and the show was also exploring more complex issues. Honestly, it would have been great if Gary Burghoff could have stayed on M*A*S*H for a little longer until the very end but all good things had to come to an end for him. All of this really makes me wish that Gary Burghoff could have been there on the show's series finale titled "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen" where he finally gets to say all of the final proper goodbyes to all of his Army buddies for good and so forth. Between the two original main characters Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake and Corporal Walter "Radar" O'Reilly, they were the only ones that got their own special farewell episodes on screen while the two other original main characters Captain "Trapper" John McIntyre and Major Frank Burns did not get one on screen. Basically, everything had happened for a reason while M*A*S*H was still on air from 1972 to 1983. If all of the original main characters had remained on M*A*S*H like they didn't, then the show would not have lasted longer like it did and it would not have been more interesting. Otherwise, great video and all of that good stuff.

Brilliant Actors! I loved Radar, but I think they were best as an ensemble...one playing off the other. I wish Radar hadn't left! It still pains me! The only character...besides Frank Burns...that I did not like was Margaret! Everyone had such unique and wonderful characters...the writers were great! I wish they had gotten better writers for the spinoff...with Radar, Klinger and Sherman it should have done well, but the writers were awful!
