    The Arnold Strongman Classic has grown into what may be the most influential competition on the sport's calendar. In this video, the winner of the 2002 Arnold Strongman Challenge (as it was then known) walks us through that very first event that took place 18 years ago and discusses which competitors he was concerned about and what he would have changed about the events.

    The pure explosiveness that Mark cleaned and pressed that bar with, incredible, and keep in mind at this point he had been retired from strength sports for several years (unless you count WWE as a strength sport). I know he spent some time training to prepare for this competition because his job was on the line but still just imagine what kind of crazy things Mark could have done if he continued to train and compete full time in Weightlifting, Powerlifting and Strongman throughout the late 90s and the 2000s, I feel he would have set many more records that might still stand to this day.

    One amazing testament to Henry's strength was during his wrestling career For those unfamiliar, a press slam is just what it sounds like, you press your opponent over your head (usually with their cooperation) and either slam them immediately or hold them up a few seconds before slamming them. This was a staple of most of the stronger wrestlers, and they'd regularly press guys 220-300 lbs. Mark Henry press slammed 'Big Van Vader; a 6'5, 430lb former center for the L.A. Rams, and a powerlifter himself.

      He already had a big contract. He was given a fat contract coming out of the olympics. Eventually the WWE soured on him a bit and gave him shit gimmicks hoping he'd just quit and leave the contract but Mark perservered through and kept collecting them cheques. And eventually he grew into the legend he became. It's probably why they gave him that ultimatum of "you better win this or you're done" considering how well he was being paid for being so green when given the contract.

  • @Siberius-
    @Siberius- Před 3 lety +10

    It's sad that the WWE didn't make it rather clear that when they say he is the "world's strongest man"... they actually mean it! they could have done that so easily. But instead it just seemed like a gimmick, because they didn't tell anyone that they're actually being serious. So strange. They brought him to the WWE for that very reason (cutting his incredible strength career short), and they didn't properly utilise it. They could have gotten some other strong guy and gave him the same title, and it would have been no different as far as the fans knew.
    Also fucked up his credibility, because the WWE is about stories and larger than life characters and stretching the facts, like their heights. So it instantly seems made up, when the WWE says he is the strongest man in the world. Very strange. Over 99% of wrestling fans who know Mark Henry, would be surprised when they hear his strength record (especially once they see the context of why it was all so impressive, as far as age, the competition, disciplines, the records at the time).

    All of the guys stand there and cheer eachother on and scream and jump and get excited when another guy does something incredible, even if it means they just got beat on the lift. All of them know the insane physical toll and effort it takes to be at that level, and push human strength beyond imagination. They're all on the same team against human potential.

      It's all opinion. I grew up watching WSM in the 90s and loved it but in my opinion the ASC is the better show. Athletes are treat better and are also paid much more and you guarantee the best of the best in the final because of the qualifying they have. At WSM you often see guys perform badly in the heats that could place very well in the final with events. Getting 50 or so grand for winning what you say is the top show is an absolute joke. It has the name,that's literally it but regardless, if we want Strongman to grow. We NEED multiple top shows for these athletes, it's not all about WSM, anyone who wants good things for the sport will accept that.

    Henry was Dr. Todd's protege. The various events at ASC were designed by Todd and Henry had practiced these very events under Todd's supervision. Rigged? No, but Mark clearly had a big advantage compared to Svend and the other athletes in 2002!
