The Arnold Strongman Classic has grown into what may be the most influential competition on the sport's calendar. In this video, the winner of the 2002 Arnold Strongman Challenge (as it was then known) walks us through that very first event that took place 18 years ago and discusses which competitors he was concerned about and what he would have changed about the events.

MASSIVELY underrated as a strongman!! The “gimmick” was no bullshit, he was a freak of nature!! 💪
Yeah guy could dunk a basketball at his size.
@@mulltothree4375 I know 😂 takes some athlete to do that
I grew up in 80s England watching Worlds Strongest Man every year religiously and still do to this day and WWF..
Mark Henry came along and it irked me everytime I had to hear him being called Worlds Strongest Man when he never entered it.
The Arnold isn't recognised outside the USA.. A kids version of Worlds to Europeans.. It still is.
Shame he never tried it.. He could of used it legit instead of a gimmick.
@@fingersTitan The reigning WSM winner lost to mark Henry at that Arnold classic. And the WSM for that year had yet to be held, so it’s not like the guy was just a previous winner, he was the REIGNING champ
@@fingersTitan Mark still holds the world record for drug free unassisted Deadlift, Squat and Clean if im not mistaken lol. Been 30 years. Guy was absolutely a freak. And natural. The gimmick wasnt bs at all.
It's crazy to think how far Mark Henry could have got if he had solely focused on strength his entire career
He'd have been a monster, up there with eddie, thor, Brian, Z and the guys for sure. what gets me is he's supposedly clean his entire career
@@bouttobreak12 definitely wasn't clean. Almost all arhletes claim to be for fear of being stigmatized or discredited
@@theteddy1487 he was tested during the Olympics and came back clean.
@@cfields8507 because he cycled like anyone on gear. You're gullible if you actually think he was clean
@The Teddy he was clean the entire time. He left the sport because it was so many guys on PED’s he felt like he was being cheated. He has said this many times over the years
The fact that he could dunk a basketball at his size and weight showed how much of a freak of nature he was/is. Not just strong, but athletic as hell and resilient too.
Mark Henry never peaked. Imagine what he could have done if he had.
Honest, humble, not interested in claiming anything he couldn’t do.
Mark gave credit to his peers as deserved. Class act!!
He wasn't called "the strongest man in the world" he was called "the world's strongest man" & he was definitely worthy of his reputation.
The pure explosiveness that Mark cleaned and pressed that bar with, incredible, and keep in mind at this point he had been retired from strength sports for several years (unless you count WWE as a strength sport). I know he spent some time training to prepare for this competition because his job was on the line but still just imagine what kind of crazy things Mark could have done if he continued to train and compete full time in Weightlifting, Powerlifting and Strongman throughout the late 90s and the 2000s, I feel he would have set many more records that might still stand to this day.
Eddie hall sure as hell would not have been the first to pull 500 kilos
@@robskovira5626 agreed
@@robskovira5626 I’m not sure. Mark held the record at 403.5kg or 903 pounds. Raw with wraps.
Eddie was using every gimmick possible and it damn near killed him.
I’m not saying Mark wouldn’t have been able to go beyond 403kg but he wouldn’t have been able to do 500.
He may have been retired from strength sports but he never stopped training.
On one WWE event (I can’t remember which one) he pulled two semi trucks. Granted this was still very early in his career as a pro wrestler but he hadn’t quit training at that level.
he's already pulling 950 back in 02 .. thats insane.
Above the knee deadlift
The first 900 deadlift from the floor in competition was done in 1983 by Dan wouliber from ohio
Look up Doyle kennady dead lift
Look up Andrew Bolton
He was hitting 815 as a senior in highschool
One of the smartest men in the wrestling business! He was able to get some SWEET deal contracts out of the WWE!
Hope so he deserves it
And he didn't even catch the bar on his clavicles. He just caught the weight on his wrists! Fucking nuts!
Bro I noticed the same shit that’s fucking crazy
Shoulders* you'd break your damn clavicles with this thing
You forgot to mention that during Mark Henry's hummer push, they forgot to take the E-brake off and he still won the event.
You’ve got to be fucking joking that’s insane 😂
It had to happen to the black guy huh
High school we had a similar even to that but instead a team of 4 pushed a fire truck. We were the first ones up and spent our 1 min trying to move it and we couldn’t. Guy forgot to take it off park. They let us go again but we were all gassed by then and lost that event.
@@SlaughterhouseJTV proof?
@@theteddy1487 Not needed. This is the internet. You can just make up random sh. on the spot and never have to actually provide any evidence at all. Just saying it with conviction is enough.
Perhaps the only PED-free Arnold strongman winner and the strongest PED-free man of all time
Lol
Why do people keep saying this? He isn't natural
Everything I've ever seen about Mark is that he is one of the nicest people you will ever meet
I met him as a kid a long time ago at an H.E.B.(A grocery store) in Austin Texas. He was as big as the entire isle... I walked up to him unwavering and said, "You're Mark Henry!" He said,"Yes I am little man" and shook my hand with a smile. A genuinely classy human being. One of my fondest memories.
I think Mark still drives the Hummer he won from this.
Brotherhood, such a blessing. I hope I’m as blessed as he is for the same type of love. Even when you’re feeling angry. Being shown that people actually loved him and cheered for him. A blessed man that just so happens to be strong.
"It might sound arrogant..." Nah. I feel like arrogance is un-earned confidence, and Mark Henry has clearly earned it.
@@Eli1993. no
So many people have no idea how strong this man was and still is. Also a great guy! A true legend
how he cleaned it right to shoulders with a double over hand grip. jesus
That's because back then straps were unheard of and everyone had to/should have trained their grip and train it properly
Now it's a forgotten art and straps are relied on far too much.
Personally I think they should be removed from the sport; more so the Fig 8 straps, they IMO just take the piss!
@@dannyb1979 what would you recommend to improve grip strength, I just started going to the gym a few months and I am making good progress, I deadlift without straps or a belt because I don't think I need them yet.
@@abiola82 Don't use straps at all; that's a starter. Also do plate pinches, buy something like the Blue Fat Grips, or even the Fat Gripz Extreme, maybe a Rolling Thunder and/or pinch block etc
Even deadlifting and doing rows on an axle bar; overhand will work massively towards your grip
@@dannyb1979 thanks for the advice
@@abiola82 No worries; as I've always advise 'just pick stuff up'. Don't think about it; just do it . Do all deads overhand where you can, no thumb and then when grip starts to weaken, use your thumb etc. Hook grip is also a good one to learn, its a fantastic grip but it does hurt when the bar starts to get heavier
Mark Henry is the strongest NATTY lifter of all time and many of his records still stand.
his 5 lift super total is still the highest for 25 years now.
As natty as rich piana or mike o hearn or brad Castleberry
@@rorycreane7581, the reason Mark left Olympic weightlifting was because he couldn’t compete against guys who were dirty. Mark Henry has always competed as a natural and he’s proud of that.
Not only that but he’s a country boy. His momma would’ve whipped his ass if he was on drugs.
@@dr.floridamanphd I hope your right.
@@dr.floridamanphd bro 😂😂 you don't shoulder press 400+ and break a goddamn metal chain with your bare hands natty. It ain't happening.

One amazing testament to Henry's strength was during his wrestling career For those unfamiliar, a press slam is just what it sounds like, you press your opponent over your head (usually with their cooperation) and either slam them immediately or hold them up a few seconds before slamming them. This was a staple of most of the stronger wrestlers, and they'd regularly press guys 220-300 lbs. Mark Henry press slammed 'Big Van Vader; a 6'5, 430lb former center for the L.A. Rams, and a powerlifter himself.
Wow this was an amazing piece. Thanks a lot BarBend!
One thing that bothers me some about this legend, is just that I’ve seen all types of videos and podcasts with body builders and strongmen champs discussing other legendary guys. I’ve never really ever seen many discussing the legend and records of Mark Henry. You can find all the wrestlers talking about how incredible this guy was. Sadly it’s hard to find the current bodybuilder guys giving Mark Henry his well deserved recognition. I mean there’s a few mentions of him I’ve come across, but nowhere near what is deserved. Mark is an absolute legend. Loved being able to watch his whole career!
Just discovered about this man and I'm really impressed, to beat guys like Karlsen and Pfister at their own game is impressive! At that time Samuelsson was also an impressive strongman, such a shame they didn't invite him
He did got invited i belive but many guys turned down cause they where not sure it was worth it and try to focus in solething else. Boy they got that wrong, huh?.
his static strength wasn’t good
Of Samuelson
Lol
I love seeing some of the other strongmen clap seeing Henry dominate the apollon wheel
Thoroughly enjoyed this video! I enjoyed it SO MUCH, in fact, that I gave it a GREAT, BIG, HUMONGOUS "thumbs up" and subscribed to the channel and also clicked onto the bell icon to receive all of the notifications. Thank you ever so much for making this terrific video. Please keep up the wonderful work.
The brotherhood...love it.
Thats alot of strength sports man.
I hope Vince McMahon gave him a big, big, big raise or something like that.
He already had a big contract. He was given a fat contract coming out of the olympics. Eventually the WWE soured on him a bit and gave him shit gimmicks hoping he'd just quit and leave the contract but Mark perservered through and kept collecting them cheques. And eventually he grew into the legend he became. It's probably why they gave him that ultimatum of "you better win this or you're done" considering how well he was being paid for being so green when given the contract.
It's sad that the WWE didn't make it rather clear that when they say he is the "world's strongest man"... they actually mean it! they could have done that so easily. But instead it just seemed like a gimmick, because they didn't tell anyone that they're actually being serious. So strange. They brought him to the WWE for that very reason (cutting his incredible strength career short), and they didn't properly utilise it. They could have gotten some other strong guy and gave him the same title, and it would have been no different as far as the fans knew.
Also fucked up his credibility, because the WWE is about stories and larger than life characters and stretching the facts, like their heights. So it instantly seems made up, when the WWE says he is the strongest man in the world. Very strange. Over 99% of wrestling fans who know Mark Henry, would be surprised when they hear his strength record (especially once they see the context of why it was all so impressive, as far as age, the competition, disciplines, the records at the time).
100% facts. In fact, MANY consider Mark Henry to be the strongest human ever. Dude STILL has several records that still stand despite all the steroids.
When I first saw Mark Henry in the WWF I thought it was all a gimmick but this dude is as strong as a rhino. Only man since Thomas Inch to clean and press the inch dumbbell. 173 pound dumbbell that is extremely thick. He cleaned and pressed it with one arm.
The brotherhood.. Hell yea.
This man was deadlifting 950lbs in 2002, with no gear, while not training. W...T...F
He is the STRONGEST HUMAN TO EVER LIVE. Seriously.
Dude is a super-freakish human being. Strongest man ever.
Dude was an absolute beast
I loved mark henry in wrestling and always love hearing him tell stories
Kaz still looked huge at the first Arnold's
Mark Henry, you are an amazing human being
A little disappointed you didn’t give Phil credit for winning WSM and just called him a finalist.
At the time of this competition, Pfister had yet to win one, so it's historically accurate in that context.
freakied0550 yeah but he called him a 3 time WSM Finalist and he also hadn’t achieved that accolade yet in 2002. All he had to say was Phil Pfister “a future WSM champion in his own right” *edit I’m wrong on this
I'm surprised they don't have more footage of this. Crazy in an age when it's so easy to do.
Mark Henry has strategy!!!
Nice video 👍 thank you
Mark henry is awesome!!!
Amazing doc, long live Mark Henry
Strongman definitely is a different kind of sport. Where others are all Me vs Everyone, or My Team vs Everyone, strongman feels more like Us vs The Human Body from the athletes.
All of the guys stand there and cheer eachother on and scream and jump and get excited when another guy does something incredible, even if it means they just got beat on the lift. All of them know the insane physical toll and effort it takes to be at that level, and push human strength beyond imagination. They're all on the same team against human potential.
Definitely the comradery is what drew me to the sport.
That was good. glad I found tour channel.
Not only a strong man……but a smart man. Respect.
Can we take a moment to acknowledge how big Kaz looked in 2002 jesus (5.48)
12:45 that's o some degree still there today. one of the reasons why i love this sport. you want to see the limits of the human body broken and overcome. everyone in this sport wants to see records falling and people succeeding. of course there's some beef between some athletes every now and then, but that might also just be there to create more interest and drama around these comoetitions. you know who i'm talking about.
the respect and sportsmanship between the athletes overall in this sport is honorable and admirable.
So true! Who remembers the dudes/dudettes/teams that came in second place?
When they showed the strongman and they panned to mark he looks like he's ready to go all out such an amazing athlete who has a lot of explosive power
iwould have liked to see mark henry go against brian shaw, eddie hall and the mountain to see who was the strongest. in their primes of course
Eddie, Brian, and Thor are all on various PEDs. Thor has openly admitted to using steroids in the past.
Mark has always been clean. That’s a bit of an uneven playing field, but it would still be amazing to watch all of them in their prime compete against one another at the Arnold.
The strongest man to compete in clean events
Love to you Mark. Much respect
Mark Henry as legit as you get
I’ll subscribe to you because this is an awesome video

@@antoniocenteno1483 The name is everything though. Mark Henry may have been the strongest Man in the world but technically he hasn't won the world's strongest Man so can he say he's WSM. Everyone knows it. Only fans know of Arnold classic.
It's all opinion. I grew up watching WSM in the 90s and loved it but in my opinion the ASC is the better show. Athletes are treat better and are also paid much more and you guarantee the best of the best in the final because of the qualifying they have. At WSM you often see guys perform badly in the heats that could place very well in the final with events. Getting 50 or so grand for winning what you say is the top show is an absolute joke. It has the name, that's literally it but regardless, if we want Strongman to grow. We NEED multiple top shows for these athletes, it's not all about WSM, anyone who wants good things for the sport will accept that.

Cool🔥👍
I learned something
Terry Todd taylor made it for henry to win it. He was allowed to train on the equipment. No one else was permitted to.

his balls told him all that ?? respect.
Henry was Dr. Todd's protege. The various events at ASC were designed by Todd and Henry had practiced these very events under Todd's supervision. Rigged? No, but Mark clearly had a big advantage compared to Svend and the other athletes in 2002!
Svend and company all hold Henry in the highest regard, they all say he was/is the strongest.
I am Herniating just watching this...
Some people would of went bankrupt bidding back yonder lol
While I agree this was impressive him saying “I was the worlds strongest man” isn’t true. The strongman competitors save themselves specifically for worlds strongest man contest every year. More than likely these guys were gassed and weren’t in 100% shape for this lesser competition. He was competing with guys at their 80%.
He was not going to fired for not winning. But nice promo Mark.
imagine if Mark Henry took juice
He’d be bench pressing triple-wide trailers if he did that 😂
He did
They wanted to test raw strength but had a contest for reps? That's endurance testing lol
He’s the first ASC champion a big difference from WSM title. A very far stretch for him to call himself a world’s strongest man.
He beat the reigning WSM in this very comp so not really too far a stretch.
