- Apartment Sessions: Iceland - The Whale (Daniel Emond)
"The Whale is the opening song to a concept album/musical I’m writing by the same name, based on my favorite book, “Moby-Dick”. Like the 800-page tome, Iceland has a storied history of whaling; there could be no more fitting a setting for Ishmael’s wandering ballad than Hvalfjordur, Iceland’s Whale Fjord. In the show, Ishmael asks you to picture in your mind’s eye, the last time you were standing on a beach looking out to sea, before we hear the first note. The first breath I took to sing on this particular day was a cold, but happy one." - Daniel Emond
“Icelandic Sailor: I don’t like your floor, maty; it’s too springy to my taste. I’m used to ice-floors. I’m sorry to throw cold water on the subject; but excuse me” -Moby-Dick, chapter 40. Midnight, Forecastle.

I've just had one of the worst days of my life and listening to this makes me smile after a day filled with tears. Thanks, Apartment Sessions.
If I had Daniel's voice I would sing instead of talk! Love it!
So accurate. Those little runs that he does are beautiful.
All the world's an apartment and we are merely musicians
I swear your guys's channel will be great.
I like to imagine that your plane ride over you guys got everyone on the plane to sing. Scattered across the isles one of you guys gets bored and starts singing. Then everyone else joins in and its incredible...
Thats just my imagination though.
Thank you for making such incredible music in all of these. It made my week wonderful!
This song speaks the TRUTH: we *are* in November now.
This is incredible :D So Stoked to see this series! :)
This is so cool! Super glad I pitched in for this goodness, can't wait for more :)
Awesome!
Just wow!
Lovely..
double upload, lets get it
Hey, love this channel, and in my opinion this is one of the best songs you've put out. However, that two minute outro makes it a bit cumbersome to have on any sort of playlist. If it's not too much trouble, could you upload a "radio version" of this video that ends around the 4:22 mark?
this apartment does not look really well isolated ! :)
This was great. Was it difficult keeping all the instruments in tune, out in the cold?
probably
was studio sound....
There was no studio sound. They're recording that live in the video. Look at all the mics everywhere. Plus, that's kind of their schtick. They record songs in weird locations (mostly tiny apartments).
@@aaronvockley5448 Bravo no wind sounds , really good performance
sounds like the violins were difficult to keep in tune.
How does one record in the middle of nowhere? I can't imaging a laptop is enough to power everything, right?
solar panels!
who will be the hero that submit the lyrics?
#1. THE WHALE
ISHMAEL:
WE’RE IN NOVEMBER NOW
THE CISTERN OF MY SOUL HAS FROZEN OVER
NOW ONE COULD SKATE ACROSS
I COULD TAKE MY LIFE
WITH THE PISTOL AND THE BALL
YOU COULD CALL YOUR DOCTOR,
MINE CAN’T BE FOUND ASHORE
Ch
AS WE SET SAIL FOR I DON’T KNOW WHERE
AHAB TAKE THE WHEEL IF YOU DARE
WITH THE GREAT WHITE WHALE I DON’T COMPARE
ALL THE SAME I WILL BE THERE
IN BED WITH A CANNIBAL’S KOKOVOKO CURSE
FROM SWEET DREAMS OF JONAH I AWAKE
CRYING TEARS OF THIRST
IF YOU SHOULD EVER LEAVE I’LL SHAKE YOU FROM YOUR SLEEP
AND WARN YOU THAT OLD THUNDER IS KEEN
ON NIGHTMARE IVORY
Ch
IN SATURN’S GREY AND NEPTUNE’S BLUE
YOUR LOVE AND YOUR LIFE ARE GONE,
NOW IMAGINE THAT WE WON
AND WHEN YOU CLAP YOUR EYES UPON
THE WHITE AND THE MIGHT OF GODS,
NOW IMAGINE THE LEGEND
FATHOMS OF CREAMY FOAM STRETCH BEYOND THE STERN
THE SKULL OF SPERMACETTI AND SOUL
ARE NOT UNLIKE OUR OWN
HIS BODY DRIPPING LIFE INTO THE MOUTHS OF SHARKS
WHO SWIM ALL AROUND US
INCHES FROM OUR SLEEPING HEARTS
Ch (X2)
