How To Rebuild Honda Civic D17 Transmission | Manual Swap Part 2 | Project EM2

  • What's up everyone! Today we're continuing the manual swap on the Civic EM2, and before we install the transmission, we need to rebuild it. The previous owner of the transmission had mentioned that 3rd gear did have a slight grind and it has over 200k miles on it, so it's a good thing we'll be replacing all of the synchros and bearings to make this transmission new again.

I just want to thank you for this video. My 2003 Civic EX has 253,000 miles, and the synchros badly needed replacing. I bought a carbon synchro kit from Synchrotech, and I watched a video about changing the input shaft bearing from Eric the Car Guy (awesome video for disassembly and reassembly to that point), but I didn't know how to take the gears off of the mainshaft and countershaft. You truly saved the day, and I thank you!
Some of my gears didn't slide off the splines as easily as yours (I had to use a puller), but knowing they would come off and weren't a solid piece with the shaft was huge! I also found it helpful when you showed how to put the circular wire thingies onto the synchro rings - once I understood how they worked, I could see that the synchros would not function correctly without them. I successfully changed out all the parts and re-installed my transmission two weeks ago, and now it works perfectly. You rock!!

First off .. Great video.. I just did all the bearings including the diff ones you skipped.. They are not sealed bearings. On the bottom they are open just like the new ones. If you think of it. You want them to be open and taken in as much MTF as possible. Otherwise they would also seal up the bottom. Just wanted to share this because I almost thought about keeping them but now glad I changed out,

Thanks for this. I may have lost my trans after losing fluid with an unseated and torn CV axle, casualty of the engine swap I guess. Hopefully it'l be ok, but if not your video is a masterpiece. To a few below asking about 5th gear popping out, it's probably low fluid. Open the fill bolt (midway up and left from the drain bolt) and you should have fluid to the bottom of the hole sitting level.

Great video. Followed yours. I did mine because. Mine would not stay in 5th gear. Changed everything out put it back together just did a test drive. Still won’t stay in 5th gear. Feeling defeated today. Lol. I saw nothing wrong with the gears. Looked great. Back to the drawing board.

If you use a heat gun on the case and put the bearing in the freezer, it will drop right in without a HAMMER.

There’s also a TSB from Honda regarding clicking noise while turning right in second gear. Very common for the reverse idle gear to get sloppy make noise apparently. Heads up, just one of those ‘while ur in there’ things to check

No, he got it right. On the main shaft 5th gear is at the top and is the large one. On the COUNTER shaft, the gears are the opposite. Large on bottom, small on top. Still, fifth gear is the top on both shafts. Yes, I’m a mechanic. No, I’m not a keyboard warrior.

Should've given them shafts and gears a good cleaning before re install along with fresh lubrication. Your hands carry more dirt than you can notice, don't want to have any contaminants in there at all. If you have to clean when you take it apart clean it again when you put her back together.

I put a link to the kit I used in the description of the video. I ended up finding it on eBay. I don't know if it's still available or not, but when I was looking most of the kits were only bearing kits. This one included synchros, bearings, and seals.
