I sortof agree, but... your last car (the 4-rotor) seemed focused on rolling 3rd gear burnouts and winning parking lot rev battles. It was an incredible accomplishment, but seemed like more spectacle than substance. I would have liked to see you engage in some form of competition, but the closest we got was watching a professional racing driver drive your car on a racetrack because it was too unwieldy for you. Is that the "experience" you're going for? Hopefully the 5-rotor will be more than that. Competition can also be spectacular and "an experience".
I feel like there is so much that can be learned from this video, especially from the younger generations. Always been a huge Mazzei fan and I cannot be more stoked for a project right now!
People like you and Rob Dahm are the reason why car community is loyal. You sharing this (beyond the sponsors, branding etc etc) is why we keep dreaming about cars.
I get you Dave!! I'm old school, and it IS about the feeling, and the challenge to interact with the vehicle to keep it running, despite it wanting to stall at low rpm's. Really glad to see an update from you, and your progress on the Mazzei 5R! It looks amazing, and can't wait to see it on the street. The sound will be glorious!!😍👍
Pleased for your return, I honestly had been contemplating recently when you would arise on yt with the 5. Selling your FD couldnt have been easy, but necesssary to propel this stage forward I realise. It was a purpose-built machine in the end, less a vehicle. Looking forward here as everyone should.
Welcome back, and well said. Too often people get lost in the "make it easy" mindset and lose that which makes the soul of a car shine through. Having just the right amount of pucker factor makes every trip memorable.
This beast reminds me of the Group C/IMSA GTP era of racing. Right when I was typing that about that era you said it in your video. I remember watching them race in person from the mid 80's to 1993 when IMSA GTP folded. Congrats a build like this and I can't wait to see it in action.
Glad to see you posting up again. I’m with you, when not racing, being the fastest doesn’t matter. It’s all about the enjoyment. Sold all my modern Italian and Japanese super bikes and race bikes and now tinkering with an old three cylinder two stroke Kawasaki. Just so much more back to basics fun.
super cool stuff. totally agree about the comparison with manual shifting. its truly more about how it feels rather than convenience when you are doing a car like this
Right on Dave, you've done it again, first with the f-1 RX7 , Now the Concept continuation of the 787B Race car. You're about visual experience, with balls on emotional depth and almost a multiorgasmic driving experience!!! YEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!! I UNDERSTAND YOU DAVID AND I WILL BACK YOUR FORMULA ALL DAY LONG!!! 365 4 WHAT? THAT FEELING !!!!!! KEEP UP THE VIGILANCE MAN. I FEEL YOUR DIRECTIONAL POURPOSE. SNAP THAT BRAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPP!!!!!!!
David Mazzei, I couldn't thank you enough. This really helps me through an internal battle with myself on my current build. It's a 96 Ford ranger with a 96 explorer 5.0 in it paired to a 5 speed manual from a similar year f150 and an explorer 8.8 out back. I'm running the engine off of a microsquirt v3 ecu and... I'll admit it is a daunting task of frankensteining a harness together from my stripped back v6 injector circuit with the addition of the extra two connectors paired. its almost like youre supposed to do some things this way in this unique swap process. The ignition system is another story, i have a Wells ignition module from my 79 F-150 running a pro comp billet distributor in order to make this engine run and ive tested it, the kid didnt sell me a bad motor for 400 bucks... the software has different verbiage for critical settings and explanations and things that get me to scratching my head and bouncing back and forth between the truck and continuos research and discrepencies. I was sort of nudged in the direction of a DIY ecu by not having the original engine computer, but similarly to your scenario, I know my build wouldn't be as exciting when it's all said and done because I wouldn't have the blood sweat and tears into it; nor the added benefit of having a more unique, versatile, and enjoyable creation with feeling and emotion and its strange yet intriguing how the architecture and design elements and creation put into a vehicle can display different emotions and characteristics. When i first learned about DBW and TAC motors and they got involved with my mainstream retail work, I always seen them as a nuisance and a possibility for things to go south on them. I have concluded I will never trust my ability to utilize one in a build and that I wouldn't want to muddy the experience because the cable has made so much sense over the years. My ride is made to party on weekends, get me back and forth to the shop during the week, haul whatever I need while it doesn't have a radiator, fuel cell and other equipment, and take me to Bowling Green for Ford Fest every year to autocross race it. There were guys that brought the Fiesta STs and Focus RSs in '21 that had all bolt-ons and mods including some CF stuff and weight reduction. I placed better qualifying times than theirs once I got acclimated to the course, but i was connected to my truck because it was my first payed off legal begal vehicle and ive put it to its limits on the street when I got the chance in order to take it off the streets. Sadly I had a fan relay command wire end up under the battery and kept blowing fuses at the first "Chicago box" on two runs back to back and I got DQ'd. It was unused because the single relay kept failing. I've since switched to using two. Failures, mistakes, hard choices, unforseen circumstances, and refinement are just parts of the divine process. And I'll accept the ups and downs of it as long as I get to race another day.
Awesome! Love where you're coming from. I would go the next step and not do any auto blip either. The skill of perfecting heel & toe downshifts will surely add to your experience. Yes, it will take a lot of practice, but when you get it right, you'll feel like a legit racing driver! :)
No power steering?! Oh man, that's the one thing I don't miss from driving old cars. I feel like half my bone structure was bent and reshaped in my 20's just to accomodate the sort of power I needed whenever I had to do a 3 point turn with my old shitbox of a car. It is nice to see it shaping up tho, and the mechanical throttle will definitely give you what you want.
Thank you so much Mazzei for the latest update on the 5 rotor race car. I was a bit worried since the last time you post a video and I can't wait to listen and watch it drive. (Mainly listen because 5 rotor is unique) So excited!
We have all been waiting and you didn't disappoint as I knew you wouldn't. That's gonna be the baddest slc out there! Thank you so much. I'm so tired of seeing v8 ones lol!
Finally! A real five Rotor. I’ve been bugging a bunch of so called Rotary manufacturers and enthusiasts to build one! But it seemed to fall on deaf ears? Thank the rotary gods someone is taking on the challenge!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
i love how all these sponsored racing drivers can't build a car like this and then a normal guy goes in and builds something like this, absolutely insane how it came out already
G'day from West Australia😉 One very nice build, totally raw driving experience the only way to fly in my opinion. Speaking as a3rd gen automotive engineer with 43yrs trade life.Almost 60yrs old. Built my 1st small 2 stroke engine at 5 with my mum reading the repairers manual 🤣😀 Only lawn motor in the suberb that could accidentaly cut house bricks used as garden bed edging. Stuffed the blades of course.🙄🤔 In short yeeeeep avgas runs in my veins. Love old school driver feed back. Really gets the adrenalin pumping. Rotary engines are also very cool. You have a new follower.🙂👍👍
Rob damh stuck on the 4 rotor while this man already made sold 1 of a kind 4 rotor and now is on the 5 rotor. I like Rob but this man is on another level.
Yooo I could not agree more with what you said about the emotions about driving a vehicle. I have own multiple vehicles since I was 16. Nothing crazy fast…but my favorite one out of all of them so far, and one of the cars I still own today, is a 2003 Toyota Corolla. 5 speed manual. No ABS. Cable driven throttle body. I’ve done some work to the engine and took a ton of weight out of it last summer and it’s such a blast to drive. It is definitely not the fastest car ever. Buts it’s super light. Fun to drive. Like im actually driving the car.
This is why slide throttle ITB is the best for rotary engines. You need that extra sensitivity off-idle. Even with a DBW single throttle body, I would highly recommended a much more progressive cable cam, with a longer inititial traval than what you have here.
My '07 Ion redline has this exact feeling you are talking about. It is drive by wire, but it does not dampen or alter ANY of the throttle input. I can make my car a bucking bull in 1st gear if I want. It will do exactly what you tell it. It's raw. I wouldn't have it any other way.
And this is why your builds are so different its all about the feeling. Thats why i love cars the feeling they can give is insane. Enjoy the road leading up to this feeling.
I absolutely love this. I don't think I cold have summed it up better myself. This! This is what all true car enthusiasts are chasing. That feeling. Keep it up. Great video, and even greater car.
This man should have led the C8 development team. It's all about the experience. I love my R8 for this reason. The ability to feel what each wheel was doing, manage the gears, steer with either end of the car, and have a great experience while not ending up in jail. My current SS is still a fun experience, but the 2-3 shift starts approaching jail time.
OMG I AM HAPPY TO SEE YOU!!! Every once in a while I would pass by see the last video you posted Wondering with everyone else when is he going to upload again
This is refreshing from a CZcamsr. Aesthetics, sound and for you, feel are more important than chasing numbers. eg. Tavarish should be V10 swapping that P1, not trying to "break 250mph and 1400hp".
Most of car YT is all about show and no good outside of the drag racing YTers. Tavarish actually wanting to go for a record is kinda new in the car YT world. Also V10 swapping a P1 to be unique? It'd destroy everything that made the P1 special to start with. The amount of engineering ball ache to fit the V10 would be incredible. It'd require a modified rear subframe (if not a brand new subframe) and probably a new gearbox to start with since the original is designed to work with the hybrid system. And since the wheelbase has been increased, you'll need a brand new one of one rear clam shell. Also extending that wheel base will cause the suspension geometry to need correction. Also a completely new wiring harness would be needed, since nothing would be compatible with what is there to start with. V10 swapping the car properly would genuinely cost more than factory restoring the car.
That statement should have come with an age rating. Automotive smut. I love it. Couple of years back I stepped out of an ariel atom into a 488. Never been so disappointed getting into a ferrari. Lacked emotion and connection. Bit like finally getting the hot girl into bed and finding out she is a plank.
People ask me why I'd want to drive my old mk1 golf swapped with a 2L engine with a huge cam. It idles rough. It jerks when you drive slow so you have to manage clutch and throttle to try to smooth it out. But once you put your foot down you get that amazing old-school mechanical induction noise and vibrations you can only experience with something so analog. Sure I can take out the honda jazz auto and just drive but what fun is that...
Fantastic - looking very forward to hearing that 5 rotor run. Did you consider that it might be possible to configure a DBW throttle system to behave exactly like a cable operated throttle - i.e. a direct, minimally smoothed / delayed, mapping of pedal position to throttle blade position, maybe just emulating the snail cam on the throttle body? I have an old mid engine car and the throttle cable has a 180 bend to get to the engine which gives it a bit of a friction feeling.
Doing it for the feelings and sensations it conjures, what a great message to get out there. Thank you, David.

word. this guy doing it big on his own for the most part. his design deployed
Crazy to grow up with you and see you doing these amazing things. Keep pushing the limits man
That beast looks incredible cant wait to see what it can do
This dude is the hero we need but not the hero we deserve. 👐
Ive been waiting for so long for an update on this

It gives me chills hearing the F1 car and then the 4 rotor and it's the same sound.
Welcome back, and well said. Too often people get lost in the "make it easy" mindset and lose that which makes the soul of a car shine through. Having just the right amount of pucker factor makes every trip memorable.
Always a good day when Mazzei posts a video! Can't wait to see this build brotha!
Loving the regular once a year updates 😂😂😂

David Just A Monster. He Put His Heart, Blood, Sweat And Tears In His Build. That's Why That Crazy RX-7 He Build Was Just Insane.
Please post more videos man, your car is absolutely one of a kind and you have to show it to the world.
A true driver's car guy. Thanks for sharing the raw emotion of the auto sports enthusiast.
We have all been waiting and you didn't disappoint as I knew you wouldn't. That's gonna be the baddest slc out there! Thank you so much. I'm so tired of seeing v8 ones lol!
Glad your back on CZcams bro best of luck with your project!!
Can't wait to see the build finished, you are truly an artist man!
It's been a while! Great to see you posting again. Hope the build is going well.
Thank you for sharing your passion with us David, you're the car enthusiast that inspires me the most on the web
How blessed are we that we get to see your creations on YT so excited for this car and future updates!!
Congrats on staying at the top of the "Most Interesting and Coolest Automotive Build" on the internet, sir!
Great to see you back. Looking forward to great content .

Been missing your videos, so glad to see you back
There he is! love seeing what you been up to. Sick project!
I remember back when this thing was just a shell 😂 love the process man!
been waiting for this video for a whole year, was so shocked to see it in my feed but im glad it was there!
The quality of work you do is just beautiful
I've been waiting for an update on this project. I see you've been busy in the lab! Can't wait to hear this engine fire up.
Wow your alive!! Just searched ya up last week and didn’t find any new videos.. todays a good day
The removal of the glasses so you know he means BUSINESS. Keep crushin those goals man
bruh how are you so fast at developing the build this would take rob 9 years and the hood would fly off xD props man

Finally we get a video of the build😊
I absolutely love you are doing this for all those reasons! I want to build a 4 rotot much the same! You got a new fallower out of me sir! 😊
I feel u 100 on this, it's going to be nuts just as is. Great job man
🎉❤ Man it's great to have you back!
Man..!!! 👍💯😉 Greetings from the.., 🇧🇲 "Bermuda Islands..!!!" 😎 I can't wait to see what's next regarding this build..!!! 👌🤔
David… you the man.. thanks for the videos bro. This is going to be awesome
Nice to see you’re back!

What a cool perspective to have!!!! Inspiring view to a cars personality
Good to have you back, crazier, sorry, better looking than ever! 5 rotor! Let's goo!! the car looks like a 797, what can be better than that?!
Truly unbelievable the works of art, let alone the engineering masterpieces that you create. What a talent.
Its great to see you back,

Can't wait to hear how a 5 rotor sounds!!! Combination of two of my favorite things rotors and v10
So stoked to see this build
And this is why your builds are so different its all about the feeling. Thats why i love cars the feeling they can give is insane.
Enjoy the road leading up to this feeling.
I absolutely love this. I don't think I cold have summed it up better myself. This! This is what all true car enthusiasts are chasing. That feeling. Keep it up. Great video, and even greater car.

That was intense. Brilliant stuff what an amazing project ...
The biggest advantage of mechanical throttle is zero latency. You don't have to wait for the slow computer to finally respond to your input.
yep, it's like bands recording to tape still to this day
Respect man, tame the beast with all cheats OFF!!! Car looks sooo sick bro. 🔥🔥🔥💯. Take care, can't wait for the next one.
Glad your back!
Dude we share the same enthusiasm about cars (it's all about experience) that was deep!
I too will build my own car from the ground up, thanks for the inspiration!
This will be one and only mate , what a machine 😁👍
OMG I AM HAPPY TO SEE YOU!!!
Every once in a while I would pass by see the last video you posted Wondering with everyone else when is he going to upload again

I would love to watch more your videos about creative processes and fabrication behind this beast you are creating :)
Perfect! You get out what you put in. 👌
Have been waiting for you to show us your build. Cant wait to hear it. GOD bless
Yesss, new videos! Well come back David!
You have a really great project going on. You must have paid a lot. Really great job!
Get with the tech! Lol rather.. it's art, to end from start. 👍🏼 very cool build, brother
I've always wonder when is someone going to make a spiritual successor to the mazda FURAI. Now sir you got me hooked!!!
Best advice ever bro.
can wait to see her running like crazy.. all the best and god's a speed to you...
So true everything you say! We dont need AI to feel the car. Thank you David!
Dude this car looks insane.
What a build! Can't wait to see it rip!
You can really tell how passionate he is about this project its great to see
Fantastic - looking very forward to hearing that 5 rotor run.
