    🔐Schlage Kwikset Sargent and Yale locks should be used on your own front door. Lock pickers and criminals Will have a hard time picking any of these locks. The only way you can stop brute forced entry is with a good surveillance camera. Subscribe to my locksmith channel to learn more.

    Mike, excellent explaination on re-keying the Kwikset door lock! You made it look very easy for those of us unfamiliar with these locks. I bought a Powerbolt 250 without a key and with your help, I was able to re-key it with a key I had laying around. Thank You!!!

    Thanks for this video. I agree that resetting the lock by disassembling it is insane. I made your lice comb tool and it works. If you take the lock apart and look at the sliders it becomes apparent why your lice comb tool works. The drop point for a slider to enable the shuttle to be pushed back automatically lines up the slot for the sidebar to retract. The trick is to get all the sliders to move back parallel to each other.
    There's enough slop in the lock where the sidebar retracts but the shuttle does not slide back. It does take practice to consistently use the comb. The tool works on Kwikset's smartkey SC1 keyway but again it does take practice to consistently reset the lock.
    By the way, please take apart the SC1 version. The internal construction of the sliders and pins are different. The pins interlock with the sliders.

      It sounds like torture doesn’t it I’m glad that Sargent doesn’t have a smart key, because if they did, it would probably be impossible to reset it🎉 the problem with all this stuff is you can easily just take these smart locks back to the lock store and say it doesn’t work and you don’t have to buy any tools. That’s my tip for the day take it back to the Smart store and say the lock doesn’t work please give me another one. I highly suggest you buy it from Lowe’s or Home Depot and they’re very accommodating.

    Just bought a brand new one and the lock would spin endlessly with any key. Realized someone on CZcams must have noticed this issue before. Your video helped me reset the internal lock to factory key and then rekey to my new key. Thank you for saving me the hassle of returning the lock for such a simple fix.

      You’re welcome I’ve noticed that you get a lot of faulty locks so it’s best to buy them from the box store where you can just return them quickly if you have to. I’m glad you could fix that one.

    It’s always good to know how these come apart. To your question, there are occasions when they fail as I’ve had locks where one or more of the sliders had a broken tooth or was damaged. If you don’t have the color to match the existing hardware it’s not that hard to take apart and replace a slider or two. They’re the only part I’ve seen fail. I’ve even had one where a slider fell out of the slot right after pulling out of the cradle. Sure the comb trick works to reset it but if you need to replace a slider it’s still cheaper to do this than to replace a complete lock where you have to color match customers hardware. Definitely would not recommend a diy’er take apart though unless they just want to see how they work.

    Thanks...you're a lifesaver. Bet your fellow locksmiths dont like you giving away trade secrets LOL. I do have a question though. Another video shows a locksmith using the small (pickle) tool to compress the springs to pop out the lock of a doorknob. So, instead of picking these locks, it doesnt seem it would be that hard to drill a small hole in the softer metal ring and use a dent puller to puill out the core and outer ring bypassing picking altogether? the springs do not seem that strong. Would not one be able to just reach in with a skinny screw driver and turn the lock?

      You’re a genius that’s a kick butt way of doing it. I never thought of that and neither has anybody else. I’ve never heard of that and I’ve never seen that. I bet that would work tremendously. You really are seriously a thinker. Good for you buddy that would work in my opinion, I’ve got experiment with that idea just for the fun of it. Great idea bravo for you. I bet that would work so simple as to not hardly believe it. Wow new ideas every day. Thanks for the comment. You have totally enlightened me it’s like a bell went off. Thanks again.

      Destructive entry is pretty easy with any lock. If you have a grinder, sledge hammer, torch, thermal lance, and time there's pretty much nothing with a lock that you can't get in to. Locks only pose difficulty to someone with no tools, time, or desire to leave evidence that they were there.

    Has Kwikset modified their Smart locks? I can't get this to work on the lock that I have.

    • @doorandlocktips
      @doorandlocktips  Před rokem +1

      Yeah, they have they’re made differently then the one I’m showing in the video they are more solid but even the five year old Kwikset are still better than the originals and I would find it hard press for you to take a screwdriver or any other tool and twist that cylinder around and it’s lock housing and break it. They’re pretty great if I were you, I’d either start selling them or start buying them, that’s my tip for the day. Thanks for the question someday I’ll get a hold of the brand spanking, new baby, bouncing baby kwikset.

    • @doorandlocktips
      @doorandlocktips  Před rokem +1

      You should still be able to have that tool work. You have to line the chimney up properly, because it works on the same principle of their resetting tool, and that still works on the new cylinders.
