How to shoot Portrait Photography with the 35mm vs 50mm vs 85mm prime lenses!

- This was inspired by the shoot I did with Tawny in California with the Nikon Z6 and the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm lenses. I thought it would be really cool to break down my thought process behind my lens choices and why I choose to shoot with certain lens for certain looks. Hope this helps you and Enjoy!

Man.. This was awesome.. Love it.. Especially the fact that you used all lenses in one location and showed the true difference. This is pretty much the same lenses I use in my shoots minus the 50mm. Great tutorial as always Me-Ike
Thank you!
Thank You for putting this together. Gr8 job. Love side-by-side comparison.
Very good comprehensive explanations + exemples + results fantastic Ike 🙏
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Man, this is the first time I've seen a video regarding the topic of focal length differences where I understood immediately. As a beginner in photography, I greatly appreciate this. Thank you
Thank you for coming by! 🙏🏾
Me too and I appreciate it soooo much!
As always killing it!
Fantastic demo of the various focal lengths for portraiture! 👏🙂👍
Yes, my two favorite lens (85mm & 50mm). Nice video! 😎🤴🏾📷✔
This video is gold! Just what I was looking for!

Great breakdown. One of your best videos.

She looks gorgeous on all focal lengths. Great video. My favorite focal lengths are 50 and 85. Thanks and keep safe!
Awesome work, great explanation, model was great, photoshoot looked great
Excellent job, I have learned a lot from your examples of the lenses. Your model is very beautiful.
Great vid! Much Love!
Great video, the way you showed the difference between the lenses
thanks for the explanation. this was a great video
Great video comparing these great lenses, thank you’
You're da King!!!!
Great video..... again!
Great job Mike. Can't wait to watch
Good work, very comprehensive and informative
One of the best comparisons of the focal length for the portraits especially with those 35-50-85
🙏🏾 Thank you very much
Excellent demonstration of lens compression
When somebody ask me who was my teacher I'll tell I.K.E.
Thanks for the tips, I just working on my portfolio so it was helpfull. I never had money for professional courses but thanks for the internet I can find a lot of virtual mentors like you.
Keep up the good work, big up
Love the 35 and 85 shots..😊
This was incredibly interesting and helpful ! What a great location for the shoot.
Thank you very much!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I cannot tell you how many videos I went through and they never give enough details or explanation on each 35mm vs 50mm vs 85mm.
They say it but not in the same deph and detail and reasoning as you. Especially with the proper picture comparison.
Thank you! 🙌🏾
This was extremely helpful!! Thank you SO much 🙏
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
THANK YOU! This is the first video I have found that helps me understand nikon and the 3 lenses. I've been looking for someone to do a video showing how far away to stand and what the lens will capture, etc.
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Oh my!! .... how come I just discovered you yesterday? I learned more about posing in a couple of videos than I have done in a couple of years of watching other "how to pose your model"- tutorials. And speaking of which.... your models are absoulutely delectable, to use an oldish word. I'm definitely subscribed!
Heeeyy man! Better late than never lol. Welcome to the party!
Excellent breakdown..
I subbed!
Loving the 85mm! gonna go with the Sigma Art 85mm 1.4 for headshots!
Beautiful model and images! :)
Damn that location with the yellow wall is dope. Don’t even matter which lens bro. They all dope.
Great video! I learned alot!
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic Video..Just starting out with Mirrorless and have the 50mm f1.8 S and 85 mm f1.8 S for my Z7 and the 24-70 is coming next week so will be able to try 35mm but at f2.8
I shoot with my 35mm or 50mm for the photoshoots on my channel and they are pretty nice portraits! That z6 saving you from getting home and finding out that some of the best pictures are not in focus haha gotta love it! Nice vid bro
Why am I just finding your channel now? I love it, just subbed.
Better late than never. Welcome to the party!
very informative thank you for this
I rarely comment on videos, but I wanted to say that really appreciate this video and your channel! keep it coming!
I appreciate that!
I really liked the 35mm this go round. 👍🏾
Great video like the different lens
Thank you!
Awesome video, Ike.
My 85mm f1.4 hardly ever leaves my camera. Love that lens.
Thanks Jason!
love the 50mm for sure and it makes the lady looks gorgeous and thanks for sharing :)
Glad I watched this…again.
Good stuff bro 👍🏽
That 85 is a BEAST! I love it!
It is!
Photo-Me-Ike 💯
damn that AF is solid . love this video man
i wonder how they work in like groups . id love to know that.
settings etc.
Great video as always. Good to see someone that uses the 35mm and 50mm focal lengths and actually knows how to use them for portraits. Love to see that you don’t always need flash to get the great shots you get. I hear bs all the time from “photographers” that don’t think you can get images like yours with natural light. Always looking forward to your next video.
I came here for the 85mm.😁.and fell in love with the model❤.....excellent job
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Very cool!
Thanks for your video
Loved your work!! Have you edited the pictures or straight out jpgs?
This was so damn helpful. You got yourself a new subscriber.
Appreciate it!
Love from kuwait bro your videos are awesome
Love this video. Need more like it on Patreon.
Love the 35 and 85 shots
Thanks!
@@Photomeike I didn't notice you were using Nikon Z6, the eye autofocus looks pretty good, how is it compare to Sony?
Well yeah. This video was more about universal technique that can be applied to any camera. Not about the gear. But yes I was using the Z6. I don’t own a Sony to compare it to. So I’m just more focused on how well it works for what I need. And for that, it works fine!
Awesome captures! Which Z body are you using, Z6 or Z7? Which do you prefer and why if I may ask?
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. By the way, you must be a Biggie fan because you have the NYC Hip Hop king crown and you took it. 0:06 "Way back, when I had the red and black lumberjack. With the hat to match". - Biggie Smalls
dope!
Informative with some laughs. Did you put the hotsprings on Patreon?
excellent, thank you))
Thanks. Tip on how to use 35 with out showing distortion
Hey, I would like to know, how you set the camera so that the virtual horizon appears automatically when the camera is not in horizontal direction ?
Tha k you for this I was struggling with understanding which lens to get. I wish I would’ve seen this and got the 35 mm before the 85 mm and 50 mm. I’ll pick up the 35 mm tomorrow. #newbielessonscost 🤪
Better late than never. You gotta pay to learn one way or another 🤷🏾♂️😅
Glad I just found your channel today! Loving the very practical and tangible content! Thank you.
What is the big contraption on top of your Nikon?
Hey thanks a lot! It’s an Atomos Ninja V. It allows me to record my EVF so that you all can see what I see through the EVF!
@@Photomeike thanks! I was starting to suspect that after I asked. I haven't used an EVF yet. I thought maybe the Nikon recorded it for you. LOL
Thanks again. This is so helpful and applicable to someone like me.
Dope
Love how you utilized this one location so that we can really see the differences between the lenses. The model really did an awesome job and I always admire how you give instructions to your models! Sooooo the Z6 acting funny huh? You better go ahead and make that switch to TEAM SONY bruh.. LOL
Hey thanks! I’ve been wanting to shoot at that location for the longest and Amaya is one of my good go-to’s. And no my Z6 is fine. It’s my Panasonic G85 that decided it didn’t want to record the rest of my explanation for some odd reason. If my Z6 was acting up. Then you wouldn’t have been able to see what i was shooting because i was recording the EVF lol. I did do a shoot yesterday with the Sony A6500 tho if that makes you feel better 😁
Photo-Me-Ike My bad. Sorry Nikon z6. I like the z6 for real.
Keep that same energy when the Z8 and R5 come out 👀😂😂😂
These brands aren't loyal; and neither am I. I'll switch in a heartbeat. LOL
@@kcool1128 lol true that!
Bro Amaya is still the most beautiful model you have. Also I have 50mm and a 105mm I need to get a 35mm .
Finally I found someone who gives clear and precise details! Appreciate you brotha! One question tho, my canon 80d got stolen...I wanna buy another but I want to try a mirrorless. What’s best on a budget lol
How much is your budget. The Canon M series is very nice. The Sony A6400 is a great but as well.
I have about $600 saved up lol not sure if that’s enough
hey, what is that flash bracket thing called 0:06 ? great to see your channel is growing, i remember when you were just starting and commenting on pretty much every live photography vid lol
It's a Small Rig L - Bracket.
@@Photomeike thanks
Yo Ike I enjoyed your video very informative the way you broke it down with the three lenses.
I'd like your advice on a couple things if possible?
I was getting into photography pretty strong couple years ago working with my Canon 7d and kit lens with a cheap $100 50mm lens I payed $1700 all brand new anyway it was stolen n I lost interest some what.
Long story short I'm trying to get back into the game and wanted to know where can I get a good camera body n lens that's been used/refurbished?
I think I'm going for the 85mm lens n still thinking about body?
I'm on a very tight budget n was hoping you could help me out I'd appreciate if you could hit me back ASAP keep doing what you're doing thanks Scott
Did you use off camera flash?
Lovely video. Very informative. Appreciate it!
Thank you!
35 mm equivalent focal lengths are calculated by multiplying the actual focal length of the lens by the crop factor of the sensor. Typical crop factors are 1.26× - 1.29× for Canon (1.35× for Sigma "H") APS-H format, 1.5× for Nikon APS-C ("DX") format (also used by Sony, Pentax, Fuji, Samsung and others), 1.6× for Canon APS-C format.
👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
Great video! Made me realize some things...and very nice shots also!
I just bought THE 80D. will 35mm 1.8 work for me ?
Dude! You work is so dope! Check I love the comparisons! You explained the lenses and what you were trying to accomplish very well! I currently own a 35, and 50. Looking to get the 85 soon. @Victoriajessicaphotos
My bro got the best models. Just wanted to ask a quick question and this might be influenced by the Shutter speed, but how are you able to move around a lot while snapping and having a sharp image with no blur? I feel like I breath a little and I loose sharpness
He’s working in pretty good light. If his apertures are 2.0 or less he can probably keep his shutter at 1/800 or 1/1000. That usually makes up for shaky hands. Keep shooting brother. 👍🏾
Love the CZcams videos! I have an canon EOS R with 24-70 and 70-200 sigma art lens and a beginner. What are different avenues of learning? I want to get better at the photography game as much as possible. Is there anything else I need to purchase?
great start...use what you got! Get great..at posing, natural light, composition. Have fun!!!
nice Ike
A more perfect video to compare these focal lengths literally doesn't exist. You earned a new sub from me.
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
So which one between both 35 or 50 will be the best for walking around street model mostly like instagram model …so we can get whole body….much details….& wide angle please?
super good! ;)))
Thank you!
Awesome video man👏🏾👍🏾😊
Now i have learned more About the the 35mm and 85mm. Thanks 😊
Your name sounds like you are a native of Eastern Nigeria 🇳🇬 (Igbo). By the way, you are doing a great job bro. I am a bigginner in the game, but I have learnt differences in 35mm,50mm,85mm lens.
Thanks heaps!
And I have subscribed
Big up
I use 35 or equivalent most of the time, but I do enjoy the images out of my 85 (I don't own a 50, but I use my Tammy 28-75 to cover).
Nice. And same here. The 35mm is my favorite as well.
Are those pictures straight out of the camera? They are so bright and the colors are vivid and beautiful.
If yes, no wonder Nikon’s mirrorless is still surviving in the “the auto focus and double slots and vertical grip” era.
Lol. The ones that say SOOC are straight out of camera. The ones that say Capture One are edited in Capture one.
got 85mm and thinking if i should buy 35 or 50mm now.. ill go for 35mm thanks bro! nice vidz, keep it up! im your subscribers now
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 thank you!
@@Photomeike your welcome sir.. you deserved to have more subscribers
I was dead set on getting 50mm / 85mm combo, but how you use the 35m.. damn, I need to make a choice.
My fave combo is the 85 and 35. But the 50mm does have its uses.
Nice comparison! I am looking to get a good prime. 50mm or 85mm. I think I am going to get a 50mm and 90mm macro that can be used like the 85mm but with macro abilities. Which Monitor do you have on top of this camera?
An Atomos Ninja V. Its a recorder and its what I use to record my EVF.
@@Photomeike sweet thank you!
Great video all around. Excellent model.
Thanks a lot!
85mm is my len of choice.
She’s dope, Ike 😍
Ain’t she 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
Excellent comparison video!
Thank you!
What an amazingly helpful video
Glad it was helpful!
Good stuff as always Ike. Be safe
Thanks Howard! You too!
awesome Video... I like seeing the EVF as you're shooting.. I think I have mentioned the before lol..
Thanks a lot. I like having the EVF on the screen as an added component of education and context. But boy does it add a lot more work to the workflow lol. Took me forever to match it up when the BTS video and the shots. But the end result makes for a real comprehensive tutorial
Can you do a full body shot with 85mm?
I'm a newbie. I want to get into full body portraits and photogrametry. Any suggestions for a camera?
If you watch till the end. You can see a full body shot with the 85mm lens. As well as on other videos on my channel.
keep her on deck, she is %100 all-day
I wanted to get your take on auto ISO? I usually stay in manual an leave my ISO on auto for my portraits in natural light.
I usually stay in manual ISO but I'm not against auto ISO if it gets you the results you want. Sometime I use auto ISO when doing video!
Can you do one on shooting with crop sensors like Nikon d7200?
Soon as this Corona over with I got you!
