This is a response. I have a Z9 and a Z8. I sold my Sony A1 and will never look back.
What settings do you find best for person and animal eye tracking? 3D?
Since I shoot BIF, Nikon is behind. For people, I don’t see any difference. But Nikon is behind because you have to customize, not because it can’t keep up.
Again with wildlife the gap starts to show. People, not so much.
But the Z8 is better than the A7RV for BIF
Why? I am I Nikon shooter myself, but it’s because I have legacy glass. The Sony bodies are better or competitive, and you don’t get the frustrating moments you get with Nikon and say , birds in flight. Also the Sony system is most likely to have a future. Nikon could go broke. Finally Nikon depends of Sony for technology , so it’s impossible for Nikon to ever have a camera that is way better than Sony. Posible at the end of the year or the first half of the next ,Sony is going to introduce new advanced sensors. Nikon is not going to have access to them hit the next 3 years and it will be back y to be the company with the outdated technology. Again , it’s impossible for Nikon to have revolutionary hardware technology. They can be a little bit better , but that is all.
Don’t lie the a1 is better let’s be real better autofocus, battery, sharpness
If you have the newest cameras from either Sony, Canon, or Nikon, and you’re still complaining about who has the better AF… Then it’s you that really sucks. 🤷🏾♂️. Even Panasonic has PDAF!
With Nikon finally up to speed, we are now getting into a place where overall features and lens selection matter more than who has the best AF… in my opinion.
I have the A7R V as well as the Panasonic S5ii with the PDAF. I didn't really buy the S5ii to shoot photos but I've busted it out on a couple photoshoots and was really impressed with how well the AF worked. In most portrait situations the AF is just as usable as the A7R V. So yeah to your point.... at this point in time every manufacturer has workable AF.
Agreed, this is what I was looking for, the Z8 performed well overall, no more excuses about AF from either side of the conversation!
The Z9 already caught up but that was large, bulky and priced for most. The Z8 brought the same tech in a smaller, more desirable body and is now getting Nikon that recognition.
Dude, you are growing more and more each episode. I absolutely loved the comparison you just performed. It is not easy to do what you did in such a clear and unbiased way. Peace!
The Z8 picks up the focus faster the majority of the time and also focuses correctly on the closest eye. As others have said, in low light use Starlight view on the Nikon and it wont even be a contest. In fact you should do a part II of this video because the ability to shoot and nail focus in low light is crucial to many.
I certainly am not doubting that the Z8 does a very good job in low light situations. I have been shooting with the Sony A7R5 since January. And in the more than two dozen shoots that I've done since then I can confirm that the A7R5 does a very good job at nailing good focus in low light situations. The biggest factor is usually having the correct glass on your camera for those situations
@@donaldstuckey9096 sony is aiight in low light but my Nikon Z8 does it in blacky black light. I sold off my A1 before it took a dip and before i can get the new free firmware update in the next new $8,200.00 sony body.
What video did you watch? Nikon fanboys are hilarious. The Z8 took about 10 secs to focus in the low light test and after all that it was very out of focus. The Sony focused right away and was way more in focus than the Z8.
@@donaldstuckey9096The Nikon failed dismally in the low light test in this video.
@@cooloox I think you're confused and should read what I wrote again. I never claimed the Nikon focused faster in low light in this video, what I said was to redo the low light test with the proper settings and it wouldn't be a contest.
Frankly I've shot Nikon and Sony for the last two years and still at it. both systems are good and have their caveats. At the end of the day it is what fits your preference depending on the work and the end result. But on a side note, Ike's channel is the most underrated photography channel on youtube. Ike puts in the work every time and always over deliver. Learned a lot through the years and my craft still crafting but I know I'll eventually get there. Thanks Ike.
your intros kill me every time. "long story short" yet you havent begun the story yet. Another banger video. btw I recently discovered shooting flat picture profile on Nikon is just as good as shooting log, Nikon is lowkey amazing for video
You right 🤣🤣🤣. That’s why I threw that time stamp right at the beginning.
Great video bruh, you done keep bring much needed content for our community.
Thank you for sharing the raw files. Much appreciated.
Thank you for this great comparison. And as a Nikon shooter, you have proven to me that the Z8 is a superior camera in just about every way, at least compared to this Sony. The auto focus was spot on, the colour rendering was more appealing to my eye, and the lack of blackout is a gamechanger. Nikon has caught up, and moved ahead. Thank you again.
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
We must have been looking at two different reviews. I thought the color of the rendering look pretty good from both cameras. To the untrained eye you could not see a difference.
Shooting photos : Nikon Z8
Shooting Videos: Sony A7RV
@@MikeHunt4hire Just saying Sony A7RV have more Videos Codes that Nikon Z8
@@yukin1990oh no way. The Nikon does oversampled 4k vs Sony. And the rolling shutter on the A7R5 is pretty bad.
Great video. They both are really close in AF. However, I prefer the Nikon color science and ergonomics. So, it’s the Z8 FTW!
I have the A7RV but im only testing it and want to test the z8 as well before picking a system. I thought your testing was fair and very very well done. I think it was a draw for me between the two so for me now its about what direction do i like that the companies are taking and I must say I prefer what Nikon is doing with basically giving you everything without segmentation at a fair price.
Im a sony fan, i have the a7riv and a7iv, you cant go wrng with either of these camera. both have pros and cons like anything else. I will say sony has a huge advantage when it comes to lenses with many affordable quality third party lenses. but if youre buying nikon lenses anyway then it doesnt really matter.
@@joselara4392 F mount lenses : did u forget us?
Do take into account on firmware upgrades. Last i know is:
1. Nikon always (lately) provide firmware updates to old cameras while Sony rarely does that which leads to no2
2. Rumor is that Sony might charge firmware update on old bodies
For pricing/performance/features they are more the same and it depends on your needs
Also the lens quality and performances, in general, Nikon provide excellent lens performance.
Also look into the CF cards, sony uses A type which are quite expensive per gb value compare to cf type b uses by Nikon/Canon for that matter.
@@joselara4392 I shot with a friend’s a7riv and liked it for the most part but the one deal breaker is the small size which makes the grip a little on the painful side when using it for extended hours with a heavy telephoto lens. I normally shoot with a Z9. I thought I might not like the Z9’s size when I got it but it’s comfortable despite being heavy.
@@MikeHunt4hire Nice, I dont follow nikon very much, but i knew eventuallly the lenses would catch up somehow. Back then nikon lenses didnt play so well with sony bodies like canon lenses did, i wonder how they work now?
Bruh... you have GOT to put out a list of the music you use! That is part of what makes your videos so enjoyable.
Oh... and Maya!!!❤❤❤😮😊
Great comparison video!!!!! No one else has done anything this good on this topic
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 Thank you!
Just here to support! :) Let's go #Nikon and yes, these influencers "photographers" need to stop with the BS about the AF on Nikon cameras, the Z8 and Z9 are as good or better in some scenarios.
Appreciate that!
Thanks again…. As always enjoying your visuals and audio.
Thanks bro!
Great comparison video. Subscribed!
dope video as always fam keep up the great content!
Thanks a lot man!!
Very useful. Thanks. They seem pretty much evenly matched. The Sony did focus faster in the dark, even though both missed focus. Wish you could have repeated that test a few times with deiifernt models.
Ike you are spot on my friend. The vid was really well done. Your conclusions on the matter are concurred over here. I just pulled the trigger on my Z8 last week. I needed more megapixels than my Z6ii could offer. I sell wall portraits so it made sense. I chose the Z8 because of the sensor and vertical tilting screen but I got so much more. Button illumination, auto focus, double usb ports, battery plus card capabilities and better ergonomics are a few things that come to mind. I’m going to stop looking at comparison videos about this camera. A lot of them are just unfair. I like what you did though. You bought the cameras into your world to assess how they performed. My only criticism is that you did not do this with primes. I think both cameras would have preformed better. As a wedding an event shooter. I’d love for you to do a low light performance and image quantity test of this camera to the lower megapixel Z6ii. Please use only prime lenses. Thanks again for all you do.
Thanks a lot! The reason I didn’t do primes is because I couldn’t afford to also rent the proper primes lenses to make the match up fair. The only one that would have made sense was the 50mm f1.2 for both cameras. But I am funding the video out of pocket, so I have to use the most effective means to get the test done. And both brands have very good 24-70 and 70-200 lenses. So that to me made it fair and “cost effective”. Be sure to subscribe to my Patreon or donate a “Super Thanks” to this video to support my future endeavors and see more videos like this!
I have neither of them but from this video I think I prefer the Nikon
Same 🤣🤣🤣
The blackout is a no go. IMO a stacked sensor is a godsend for photography with rapid movement and once you’ve experienced it there’s no going back. A7R5 as good as it is in so many ways just can’t compete in that in area.
Yeah that elect shutter is amazing!
Yes blackout is something i dont want to see especially on high speed continous shooting. It degrades the experience of using the camera tracking crucial moment. This is one thing Nikon shines for now but i bet Sony or Canon will add this to their upcoming bodies
does it make you forget the lesser resolution of the viewfinder of the Nikon ? 'cuz the sony has like the 3 times the resolution/detail in its viewfinder...
Well the nice thing about the Nikons is that they use very high quality glass in their EVF on top of the fact that it one of the largest and brightest EVFs of any manufacturer. So no one ever really notices that the Nikons have the lowest resolution in their EVF because they are a pleasure to use.
I love the Nikon Z8 colour tone looks more pleasing straight out the camera..both in photo mode and video so please do a portrait test with depth of field between the 2
im a sony fanboy, but nikon colors are elite.
What a super little video, Thank you and your models
Thank you 🙏🏾
great video really enjoy watching theses two cameras 📸 going head to head in a comparisons!
Thanks SJ!
There is a delay in the focus of the Nikon Z8 camera that perhaps can be corrected in the focus adjustments since it has those options because when focusing on flying birds and there are other objects in the background that would take the focus, this delay mode allows the first image keep your follow focus example at minute 6.41 you can see the Sony camera focus faster. Nice work amigo.
Great job Ike! I did love those Nikon colors but, I have too much invested in Sony cameras, lenses, and accessories to switch camps.
This is a very helpful comparison, thanks!
You’re welcome!
Here for the engagement 😂
Appreciate that King!
can i check why is you setting like ISO or sometime shutter speed different?
Why u did not use 3d focusing for nikon z8?
Well I made the mistake trying to keep the exposures as close as possible to my eye which caused me to have a slightly (1/3rd stop) different exposure on the cameras. But it made no difference to the results. Also I didn’t use 3-D tracking because this was a test on how well the cameras own AF would be able to detect the subject and find focus on a human subject without user interference.
Awesome tests - super informative. You mave have answered these so sorry in advance:
Did you have 3d tracking on? (either? Both?)
Did you try out starlight mode on the nikon?
Just curious. Thanks!
No I didn’t use a tracking mode on either camera because that involves human intervention. And I wanted to see how well the cameras were able to “predict” and “track” the subject on their own.
I didn’t use starlight mode because I don’t know if the Sony has a mode like that and I wanted to be fair and just use the default AF settings. I really didn’t expect any of those cameras to really pass that test anyways. But both did better than I expected.
Thanks. Very well done and for 95% of photographers this is exactly what we needed to see.
Thank you!
Thanks for the detailed comparison video. I have always wanted to own a Nikon since childhood. Now I am 44, finally I can afford a flagship Nikon a bit of a long wait though.
Very useful test. Thanks for the content.
Thank you!
Thanks for posting a decent comparison video.. Great work!
Thank you!
Great AF comparison between this two amazing cameras! The live view from the Nikon is something incomparable to be honest even though the Sony has some pretty cool features too.
Thank you!
What's that Umi Says mix that you used at 9:50? I checked your soundcloud but I must've browsed over it if it's on there because I didn't find it
I did see when Maya was moving foward toward the cameras the A7Rv was less color saturated in the background than the Z8. Though when Maya moved back into the camera view from the side the A7RV did have the saturation color matching the Z8 when it Bokehfied the background. I do believe the Sony was a little lower on the tripod than the Nikon but you were not on level ground. Great video as always and I know you were shooting in 4k with the cameras are you going to test the 8k? Cheers!
With Nikon and Panasonic now possessing competitive AF (in some cameras at present and presumably all moving forward) we will have 4 solid brands to choose from in FF. This is a big change from DSLR days when there were only Nikon and Canon.
Exactly! Everyone doing good, is a win for all of us!
@Photo Bunny lenses are an important point. If starting with a blank canvas, identifying the set of ‘must have’ lenses is now probably more influential in deciding the camera system. Nevertheless there remains some non-lens system features unique to some brands which might sway the decision (eg Panasonic is more video centric and has anamorphic and shutter angle features at a much lower price point than others; etc).
@@MikeHunt4hire I haven’t moved from a 5D III yet. I did however buy a LUMIX G9 as a filler and a test drive of the Panasonic system for video duties. Given that EF lenses work well on the newest LUMIX FF cameras, I feel my options are now wider than just canon. The R5 is indeed a very capable hybrid camera. I feel the LUMIX S5 IIX is similar in that regard but cheaper, with a couple of relative weaknesses; the main ones in my mind being lower MP and slower mechanical shutter frame rates.
@@MikeHunt4hire Yes the R6 II is also a beautiful machine. Unfortunately there is for some reason a ‘Canon tax’ in my home country (Australia) such that the S5 II is ~70% of the price of the R6 II. So the relative price advantage of LUMIX is even greater here than the US or Europe.
Another thing I like about LUMIX is they are ‘the underdog’. The firmware upgrades have for many years been frequent and meaningful, esp for higher end models. The G9 was announced in 2017 yet has still benefited from significant upgrades in the last year or so! Canon on the other has seemingly been forced by competition to roll out meaningful updates to some (only some) of its cameras. As for Sony, the A7SIII and A1 users have been bemoaning the lack of updates for a while.
LUMIX has and probably will always have fewer bodies in its range(s) and it doesn’t seem so concerned by product cannibalism. Thus ‘culturally’ I am attracted to LUMIX ‘culturally’ as it is very customer centric: it has nothing to lose by adopting that strategy and everything (ie market share) to gain!
I haven’t followed Nikon but it is also in a similar position to LUMIX in the mirrorless hybrid space, but has a more developed lens native system and a larger base of traditional FF users. The Z9 and Z8 images look beautiful.
With today’s equipment options being so ‘complete’, now more than ever the professions / hobbies of photography and videography really deserve to survive the advent of AI and I hope they do!
@Photo Bunny indeed, horses for courses. A risk to the wallet with a ‘lens first’ approach is that one can end up with multiple systems!
Great comparison. This was the first one I have seen between the A7r5 and Z8.
Thanks 🙏🏾
I am considering a switch from a9 to rV. I was wondering if a7rv really can keep up 10 fps. Apparently its Af can keep it up. Thanks. Never found this test somewhere else.
Quick question; did you manually set iso on both cameras or were you on auto iso ? Sony is set at 400 and Nikon at 320 on your video. Curious to know because the Nikon is showing much better colour rendering in your example.
“I’m willing to go back and forth with you over something stupid” 😂 Ike forever the goat. Also here for the engagement
Which viewfinder recorder are you using? Can you put a link for that in the description? Thanks!
Thanks a lot, very fair test.
Thank you for this amazing unbiased review. You've helped me make up my mind.
Glad I could help!
Im still rockin the 1st gen z7, I rock landscape/cityscape and use the raw files to make timelapse videos; which it is still great at. Looking between the z8 and canon r5 if anything for upgrade so that I can do portrait and moving objects. Will be interesting to see some r5 v z8 battle videos soon enough, and how a pretty much 3 year old r5 stacks up. Keep on rockin, stay blessed !
As a two system user (Nikon and canon) I recommend to stick to one system 😂 Z8 is a better camera than the R5 as well so it’s win win.
Since you are already on the Nikon system and your main subject is static I will stay with Nikon. Next year with Sony and Canon introduce advanced technologies that Nikon will be unable to match for years (they depend on Sony ) you will be able yo peek between them. Right mis we don’t know if the Canon Stacked sensor or the Sony next gen will be better , or what the new processors will bring.
Exceptional Review !!
17:55 it is something i noticed in several side--by-side comparison between A7RV and Z8; the Z8 seems to be more contrasty. The reflections on the skin are popping up more and it makes the image overall more pleasant
Great job Ike. I see a Z8 in my future.
Go for it! But make sure you use my affiliate link if you order from Amazon or B&H 👀
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO GREAT JOB !!
You are welcome! Thank you for your support!
Thank you for your video! We are trying to determine whether to retain our 7-month Nikon gear or trade it for Sony. I am curious as to which ecosystem's glass you preferred. Could you tell any differences? If we examine DXOMARK, they seem to favor the Sony FE glass over the Nikon Z's. What are your thoughts? Thank you. JP
Nikon has a better color profile. I’m waiting on my Z8 preorder. I’m a sports and portrait photographer. Currently shooting with 2 Nikon D4s and D500 as well as Z6and Z6II
Oh you’re going to love it!
@@Photomeike once I get my Z8 I’ll be working on the Z9 to pair with it. I’m selling all other bodies
This video IS the Best Video for comparing these two Cameras. Real World Here. You killed it IKE. You proved pretty much beyond a shadow of a doubt that Nikon has indeed caught up and matches Sony at it's price point and it is up to the Photographer to get the shot.
What I love about the Nikon is that it has better video without the rolling shutter, no shutter and an actual sensor protector, which others manufacturers are actually using their shutter to protect their sensor, which could actually be dangerous in the wrong weather conditions, like sand.
Nikon Z8 is truly an electronic, no mech no shutter system, no black out system with sensible CFexpress type B support, not the expensive CFexpress type A with limited hd space. It expands on what the Sony A9 started being blackout free.
Sony has the better LCD Screen mechanism, which can flip and turn every way imaginable. This is all personal preference at this point, not to mention what Panasonic is doing with even more video features than these two and SD recording on the higher end model. Great video and I appreciate your time.
Also don't forget that Nikon prioritizes actually getting the correct focus over drawing the box on the correct spot in the viewfinder. I have a Z9 and sometimes I see the box on the viewfinder is lagging behind, but when looking at the actual pictures they are in focus. This was even worse with the Z7II (and indeed focus of the z7II was a lot worse compared to z9)
So judging focus just by looking at EVF output is not the best way. I don't know about z8/z9 and Sony's but with for example the z6 and z7 series auto focus performance is actually impacted by capturing dirty EVF output over HDMI.
Well done 👍🏻
Thank you!
Well done! Great FAIR comparison. And as always, IMHO, Nikon's color rendering blows the competition away!
Thank you 🙌🏾
This is perfect! Exactly what I was looking for. I've been thinking about switching from Nikon to Sony, but after watching this I think I'll upgrade to a Z8 instead of switching system.
Thank you!
Is there a setting for the a7r5 that will rotate the evf OSD/icons when in portrait orientation?
I don’t know. The Nikon does it automatically. 🤷🏾♂️
For studio/low light focusing on nikon you have to be in AF-S mode for it to use its low light focusing feature, PS - you have to turn the feature on in the menu for it work
Yeah for sure. AF-S even gives you a focus assist beam to help the camera focus faster.
I tested that out last night in my studio and it seem like AFC is hunting abit for AFS with assis beam work better
This comparison was dope! Z7III 61MP comparison next 👀 😅
🤣🤣🤣 aye you never know.
Good video. Practical autofocus tests. The results are no surprise. The Z8 performs like the Z9; in a word STELLAR. The most recent generation Nikon AF has achieved parity with its competitors AF in any of the key areas that matter.
Agreed!
Go and ask the pro bird photographers about that.
You are a BEAST thanks for the content.
Thanks for stopping by!
Great Test
Appreciate it!
Hello! excellent job. It helped me decide which system I will invest in. The Nikon's colors are really beautiful, but from the downloaded photos, I can see that the Sony's focus is more accurate. Mainly in the eyes you can see that the Nikon are not as sharp as the Sony. Only with smaller apertures do they start to stay in focus! (This is my opinion).
No blackout viewfinder is huge for tracking movement. Shows you just one of the benefits of a stacked sensor. Mechanical shutters really become obsolete.
On the high end it sure! The black out never bothered me because I’m used to it. But seeing no black out vs black out in real world examples is crazy. We can’t go back 🤣
So I have the A7RV but I don't really like it anymore ..is it necessary to go over to the Z8 if I'm not going to use the video features as much? Could I get by with a Z6ii or Z7ii ? I have a camera dedicated to video already ..I shoot portraits and events just to give my background
Why dont you like the camera? Obviously the z6/7 are good enough but I would recommend to rent them and test them out. Just know, the af on Nikon might not be as intuitive in the beginning but is actually, when used right, better than a lot of people on youtube make it out to be. But you often need to change the af settings depending on the shooting situation
@@frickseerose6146A certain CZcamsr (who I won't promote on Ike's channel) used Nikon for years and even after switching away, regularly tests them. In real world high speed pro and amateur sports the Nikon is still behind Canon and Sony. The R3 has the current best AF system. Watching this video, I noticed neither camera detects a face as far away as even a Canon R7 can.
I did a shoot in extremely harsh overhead sun, using off-camera HSS flash. The model was crouched down low on the grass and was a silhouette in my EVF, because I exposed for the super bright grass. The R7 grabbed the eye instantly, every time. I couldn't even see her face, just a silhouette of a head with an eye detection box over her eye.
Good job!!!👍
Do you have sample raw to play with?
Good video❤❤❤
Thank you!
Awesome test, exactly what I was looking for. Hoping the Z8 AF trickles down to the Z6iii properly.
I don’t see why it won’t. I have the Nikon Zf and its AF is just as good as my Z9 (for what I use it for which is portraits and events).
Great comparison ike love it. Its just choice now like it or dont like it. Finally its just about shooting.
Thank you 🙏🏾
Great job, very informative.
Im looking to expand from Canon and this got me leaning towards Sony 😃👏🏻
That blackout doesn't bother you?
What Canon do you have? I prefer the latest Canon AF over the Sony's. Canon doesn't have that annoying blackout either.
@@cooloox every canon except the R3 DOES have blackout or repeats frames to make it seem like there’s no blackout but that creates lag.
They are so close! I would be happy with either one. 🤷🏻♂️
Same!
z8 : went to Hawaii this past weekend and picked up a Z8, WoW! Loving it!! the Focus engine is so good compared to my Z6ii or Z7...it really is an amazing new world. ( On a whim I called the local camera store....The camera store had "one" with no "owner", got super lucky -picked it up right away.). Itchin' to take it out for bird photography. From the hotel balcony i was very pleasantly impressed with the focus of fast flying birds along the beach....really really impressed. Congratulations on your purchase man!
@@Photomeike I'm still waiting for some inventory at Samy's Camera in Los Angeles. Great video bruh' very fair and straight forward - feelin' it.
I think picture styles and slightly different exposures play to Sony favor here. If you were to do this test with each brands flat profile and make the ISO match the Nikon EVF would be lighter and i'm sure the subject recognition would benefit from that. Either way though its close to the point shoot the camera that inspires you.
Here for the engagement. I was able to find a z8 last Friday and completed the deal earlier today. 😀

Not on the Sony

@@nhfeuhr3kl439 with all of the Nikons you can still use an Atomos and still see the EVF at the same time. But with the Sonys once you attach the Atomos to record your EVF, you have to use the Atomos as your screen.
@@Photomeike thank you very much, your information really helped me.. 👍
The richness of the colors from the Nikon compared to the Sony is astonishing
I agree wholeheartedly!
It looks like the Nikon was a full stop (or more) underexposed at times? Would that have affected it's ability to focus? It did well regardless so no biggie lol
You lucked out with your model, she was great!
How’s the color space between the two.
That’s a completely different conversation but thankfully I included the RAW files for anyone that wants to explore that argument!
I like Nikon better for photography. I also do video and recently been moving from Panasonic micro four thirds to Sony for video. I'm a little slow to move over. Maybe because I live in the Philippines and we don't earn nearly as much as Americans. Switching systems here is more of a luxury for Filipinos. Another great video. Not sure why I haven't had any of your videos pop up in a while.
Thank you! 🙏🏾
hi! I wanna know which is closer to real color in ur opinion? z8 or R5?
Hey thanks for your support! In my opinion the Nikon’s colors look the best. As long as you have the proper white balance settings.
@@Photomeike Thank you 🔥
Y was the nikon iso lower?.
🤣😅🤣 @ 6:20.... the look back. 😂
I'm gonna give major kudos to the Nikon Z8, considering majority of the test it was slightly handicapped by being UNDERexposed compared to the Sony.
I think if it was matched more closely (brightness values), the Nikon would perform even better/faster.
I don't rely on the AI AF algorithms etc, but if/when I do, I know AF needs alot of light/contrast to function properly & the Z series cameras** seem to like when ETTR is used/slightly overexpose the frame.
**my Nikon DSLRs preferred underexposing.
I was an owner of the Z9 for a while with Z F2.8 lenses and I frequently found that it will front or back focus even if the box was on the subject. With my previous camera, the Sony A9, that was never really an issue for me. Then again, 45MP is perhaps more demanding on the AF system than 24MP.
The Z9 has improved significantly through firmware updates.
@@ghas4151 It has, no doubt. I was running the latest firmware until I sold the Z9 a couple weeks ago. But I still find myself always shooting in an extended burst just because I wasn't confident that the Z9 could nail focus. This was especially an issue when I had to use flash for group photos during events as I had to fire like 5-6 shots just to guarantee that one was in perfect focus, even when stopped down. Had feedback from my clients that I was firing the flash too much, and that was when I knew that the Z9 although excellent, is just missing that reliability that a Sony or Canon has. With my A7IV or A9 I always just fired at most 2-3 shots in case people blinked. But I was confident that each shot was in perfect focus as long as the AF box showed that it was.
Low light tho, the Z9 wins hands down compared to A7IV or A9. The sony couldn't focus reliably whilst the Z9 could still track subjects, though the issue of back or front focusing becomes even worse during low light.
In general, I just felt that the Z9 was missing some features such as backup recording for video that meant that it simply wasn't as reliable as a workhorse compared to an A7IV or A9, even though the Z9 has incredible functions.
@@iLoveROTATIONSwhat is your camera now?
@@PetrZeVsetina I went back to a Sony A9 for stills and an FX30 for video. Had the A7IV for a while, but it overheats easily outdoors as I live near the equator. Currently waiting for the A9III to be released.
I chose the A9 over the A7IV as I find the 20fps silent shooting really beneficial for catching candids during ceremonies.
Finally, a Z8 review that isn’t comparing it to a Z9..
Right. It makes no sense to do that because they are essentially the same camera.
Your vid’s are very informative, wanted to know what lens would you suggest for the z5 for portrait photos?
An 85mm for portraits. Your budget will dictate which 85mm you end up buying.
That boy Ike doing it big! Love the comparison I would love to see what the Sony AF Police gotta say!😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣 They ain’t gone like this
you should have tried star light mode on z8 it can focus in complete dark with this mode on
You’re right! That along with a 1.2 lens 😅
@@Photomeike no seriously try d9-star light view, then try to focus in darkness
@Photo-Me-Ike
Yes please, try it! Nikon Z8 with Starlight mode on vs Sony. In a complete dark room. Game changer for lowlight event photographer.
Bingo! That's what I was thinking too, I bet these other "photographers" on CZcams won't talk about that. smh
I concur they seem to perform very much the same and I traded the A7R V for the Z8.
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾. Right. But what did you trade in the Sony? The A7RV is one of the best Sony’s I’ve tried!
@@Photomeike I love the tech in the A7R V, the active stabilization and the multi-angle screen are my favorite features. As I do more video these days, the Nikon was similar as far as standard stabilization if not a bit (using Nikon lens) better, with the Sony being better with the active stabilization while using the 24-105 f4 OSS.
Would have been great to see how the Nikon performs in low light with Starlight Mode.
Why di you use different iso's?
Because I wanted to keep the exposures the same visually.
A real test would be to have three or more subjects for which you only want to focus on one subject, kind of like when I have to photograph a baptism. Which camera will stay locked in on the subject you want and/or the features to accomplish this task.
That’s more of a real time tracking test than a set the camera up to see if it can fine the subject test. The reason I didn’t do that test is because it requires human intervention meaning it would require me to move the focus point and track the subject which even my original Z6 can do.
Does anyone knows what it means when there's a lot of red boxes like that? Does it just mean it's trying to find focus?
In AF-C mode. The red boxes mean it’s focusing on what it’s focusing on continuously.
@@Photomeike gotcha, so no matter which way the camera moves (side to side), whatever the red boxes are on, that’s what the camera is trying to keep the focus on, correct?
@@timecapsulefoto correct.
