- We all know how great an 85mm lens is for portrait photography but they offer so much more than that. A lot of the characteristics that make it a great portrait lens actually work really well for landscape photography, street photography and even food and product photography. Let's talk about it.

"85mm tells who person is, 35mm tells where is" Very important sentence!. (or, who is in society, who in family, who in nationality, where was born, where live). Beautiful definition of environmental portrait
This quote is magical
I'm a landscape photographer... Use my 85 prime on a regular basis. It's more versatile than spoken about! Nice video.
I bought an 85 specifically for street photography. This and a 35 are my 2 street lenses for the reasons you explained. I always carry the pair for street shots. LOVE IT!
That is a great line about the 35 vs 85.
Thanks for clearly putting into words what I was trying to convey to a friend regarding my love for the 85mm lens (and why he should pick one up). Had one for my A1/AE-1 back in the day and it was magical. I recently added the EF 85mm 1.8 for my R6. I'll upgrade to the RF 1.4 when it's ever released.
What a great take on a great lens. Thank you!
The 85mm is a one of first primary lens in my gear together the 24mm and 35mm. Is a incredible versatile lens for landscape, street, Macro and portrait photography style. Perfect overall.
Superb content. Demystified the notions of 85 mm is mainly for portraits. Nice presentation with example. Thanks. 👏🏽👍
I just started practicing photography this year. I use a M4/3 camera with a 45mm portrait lens. It gets very close to scenes but it's very good at taking the scene and emphasizing/romanticizing subjects.
This lens is the first prime lens I've ever used, and I love it. Thank you for the video fam ❤️
Agreed. I look back at my photos taken over the years, and it seems the 85 is the best all around lens. But...to each their own. Nice video. Thanks
Nice explanation! Thanks!
WHAT ABOUT 50MM ON APS _C SENSOR ? DOES IT GIVE SAME EFFECT ??
My 85 and 105mm are my two favorite primes. I would like a 135mm as well. Shooting full frame.
Thanks for this. It's going to be helpful as I start to explore the old Helios 44-2 that I've just picked up... in APS-C it's effectively an 85mm.
The 35mm focal length on a full-frame camera is my go-to lens for general subjects.
When I need something slightly longer than my 35, I use the 85mm.
Great reminder to challenge ourselves. Otherwise our photos will tend to look the same and not develop our craft
I only have 1 lens, it's the MFT equivalent of 85mm. It does require some creativity to make it work sometimes. Thank you for the ideas of how to use it better.
Thanks! Great inspiration. I love detail too. But sometimes we need context. Everything is right when it is right…
can only afford one lens right now. going to be doing product photography and maybe some newborn/portraits in a studio setting. should I go for 50mm first or or 85mm?
Literally brought the samyang 85mm from you guys today ✌️
I love using my helios 44-2 58mm on my fuji, so versatile
Hopefully we'll find out later this year if Sony releases a new smaller and lighter 85mm GM.
With a DX, the 85mm becomes ~130mm and does not become an easy focal length to use as you highlight in this clip. With a FX, you are right on the mark.
This distinction should have been addressed.
50mm on a full frame camera seems neither here nor there so for me, the artistic expression suffers. That said, it’s a must have lens for utilitarian purposes if you’re a prime lens shooter IMO. It’s a perfect balance of everything and nothing lol. I’d love an 85 but I fear it’s too close to my 135mm to invest in one.
useful content.
For a long time, I used my 85mm lens for almost everything. I joke that all of my photos are portraits, even when they’re not because I always want to focus on and isolate my subjects. 85mm lenses are perfect for that.
I like 85 because it forces you to get creative and selective. 50mm I never really liked. They said thats how the eyes see, but I just find it boring, no majestic wide angle, but still not close enough for good isolation. So if I would travel with only one lens I would choose the 85 that is really good at isolation of subject, and skip the wide angle landscape all together
85mm prevents lazy photography.
85 is great, but you should engage a barber.
