    My pet ants have come back from the dead! One of my ant colonies, whom we have had to say goodbye to in the past, is making an epic return to my Ant Room! I am extremely excited about their return, but this time, I have an epic plan for their ant farm terrarium! In this episode, we attempt to create a self-feeding system, complete with springtails, plants, and mites. The outcome of this ambitious biological ant project will blow you away! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

      The wild flies should be a decent supplement. They would be eating a variety of things, and come in en masse to the Ant Room.

    • @fumixlps
      @fumixlps Před 5 lety

      Jaw breakers will only eat small foods cause they are very careful. Watch a video on the old jawbreakers, they would only take cockroach babies or half a cockroach baby. I might be wrong though.

    • @migueldeclercq3883
      @migueldeclercq3883 Před 5 lety +1

      The wild flies are the worst supplement possible. Flies are one of those insects that can ingest insecticides and their bodies store it, they don't poop it out or anything. So if you want to kill your ant colony, it's a perfect food source for sure, they're like little time bombs.
      I totally agree that the springtails will not do. He needs to add another kind of insect colony in there or he needs to feed them as usual.

      I agree. And if you're eating the critters that clean your garbage.... who's cleaning your garbage? I mean once one ant gets good at catching springtails, they should theoretically be able to share the 'knowledge' of how best to do it, around the entire colony but like you say, I don't think there's enough sustenance there. They might need top-ups to their food supply from an external source.

      Actually, I'm more worried that eventually the number of ants will be significantly higher than the number of spring cleaners. Unlike in the wild, where the spring cleaners have an unlimited area to live, here in the ant terrarium, they're basically put on the silver plate for the ants. So to speak, I think they'll be overpowered and devoured in near future.

  • @mitchl5220
    @mitchl5220 Před 5 lety +83

    This is just an idea but... if you added a layer of leaf litter to the bottom plateau it would provide surface area, shelter, humidity and food for prey species within your system. Then it'd be able to easy support isopods and millipedes (which I believe are more suitable prey for trapjaw ants as their mouths look powerful like they are built to tear into chitin.) Maybe then it would even be able to support roaches. These prey species will also help break down the ants garbage. Hope this helps!
    OH! Also remember how your last trap jaws died? Wild ants climbed into their nest and killed them all so maybe you should still apply the ant barrier around the outside of your system to stop invaders haha.

    based on my experience with self sufficient ecosystems, also known as ecospheres, the trap-jaw ants will not have enough food to support their colony without supplement. There is not enough space for a sufficient amount of spring tails to thrive in this system.

    • @LtGameboy
      @LtGameboy Před 5 lety +2

      TeamCoolKats YT That's not really the problem
      The problem is more that the size of the container is too small for a sufficient amount of spring-tails to live in there, and the ants will starve, not because they can't catch the spring-tails, but because there are too few spring tails to feed the ants.

    • @MelkiorMonster
      @MelkiorMonster Před 5 lety +3

      I was thinking the same. Its kind of like setting up lions to hunt vultures, only in minature. The springtails work at breaking things down, as the clean up crew. They get plucked up here and there yes, but I don't quite thing that's the proper niche the fill as primary feeders for predatory species. (Usually would be ignored mostly as predators will mostly recognise them as cleanup crew unless the pred is desperate.) Basically the amount of work needed to hunt the springtail may outweigh the output from the tiny meal. That's why they jump at the chance to grab those juicy flies when they fall in. I think tossing some other feeders in once in a while would highly benefit this colony, they may skirt by otherwise but never really be prolific as say the golden empire.

    Everyone's mad about the clickbait title and while it's frustrating, I'm more worried about the fact that he thinks because one ant caught a spring tail that the entire colony will be able to sustain off them as their only food source. It's very clear they struggle to catch them and it requires a major effort to do so. To encourage the spring tails to appear you already have to place food (e.g. watermelon) in the terrarium - at that point you might as well just drop in a cockroach and ensure they are getting the food and nutrients they need.

      Ghost of Yharnam Same thing that I was thinking about. I don't think that it will be enough food for them. Like "good" enough. It may be a source of food but not that great of a source. I actually thought he's going to plant some seeds. lol.
      At least you get the idea that the "Jawbreakers" figuratively came back from the dead. It still made sense tho, no need to fuss about it.

      @raximousprime775 Před 5 lety +2

      I thought the same thing, there's a reason most experiments perform the same thing multiple times, any sort of variables could have contributed, that Springdale could have a had a injured leg or have been old or something, he should have confirmed multiple catches before calling it a day. If they can't catch springtails reliably then he needs to introduce another docile species that is maybe slightly larger so the ants can catch it easier

      It takes a while to get a colony big enough to move into a setup, and termites have specific requirements. He'd also have to figure out how to observe them, as termites avoid light and some species never leave their nest. Dark and humid is the thing to keep them.

      @cooperolm9687 Před 5 lety +49

      Yeah, wild ants are sustained on a variety of prey of all sizes as well as carrion, some tiny springtails aren't going to cut it. This isn't natural for them, it's a slow starvation.

    • @cooperolm9687

      @mariorossi9580 Před 5 lety +37

      I would have added isopods, roaches and other insects some weeks BEFORE the introduction of the colony, so that some other kinds of prey could florish during that period of time. I don't even know if the diet of these ants is springtales-based in nature. This is a big mistake for me.

      If there is a limit on the food supply you need things like mites to limit the number of ants to a sustainable amount. Otherwise the limit will be food and when that limit is hit they all starve. I would like to see some ant eating bugs or something. But it's a good start.

    This is cool and all but it seems that with spring tales wont be enough to feed the entire colony cockroach has so many nutrients and good things for the ants but the spring tails are so small and probably very low on nutrients and the ants use a lot of energy going after such a small meals i believe this will hinder the growth of the ants

      I think they'll have a chance. Keep in mind that they also have flies to eat, and the ants are already adapting and learning new ways of catching their prey. I'm just worried about those mites getting out of control. They don't have any predators to curb their growth.

    In Greek mythology, Gaia from Ancient Greek Γαῖα, a poetical form of Γῆ Gē, "land" or "earth"), also spelled Gaea /ˈdʒiːə/ is the personification of the Earth and one of the Greek primordial deities. Gaia is the ancestral mother-sometimes parthenogenic-of all life. She is the mother of Uranus (the sky), from whose sexual union she bore the Titans (themselves parents of many of the Olympian gods), the Cyclopes, and the Giants; as well as of Pontus (the sea), from whose union she bore the primordial sea gods. Her equivalent in the Roman pantheon was Terra.
    Birth of Gaia, Uranus, and the Titans:
    Hesiod's Theogony tells how, after Chaos, "wide-bosomed" Gaia (Earth) arose to be the everlasting seat of the immortals who possess Olympus above. And after Gaia came "dim Tartarus in the depth of the wide-pathed Earth", and next Eros the god of love. Hesiod goes on to say that Gaia brought forth her equal Uranus (Heaven, Sky) to "cover her on every side". Gaia also bore the Ourea (Mountains), and Pontus (Sea), "without sweet union of love" (i.e., with no father).
    Afterwards with Uranus, her son, she gave birth to the Titans, as Hesiod tells it:
    "She lay with Heaven and bore deep-swirling Oceanus, Coeus and Crius and Hyperion and Iapetus, Theia and Rhea, Themis, and Mnemosyne and gold-crowned Phoebe and lovely Tethys. After them was born Cronos (Cronus) the wily, youngest and most terrible of her children, and he hated his lusty sire."
    Cult
    Gaia was worshiped under the epithet "Anesidora", which means "giver of gifts".Other epithets were Calligeneia, Eurusternos, and Pandôros.
    In ancient times, Gaia was mainly worshiped alongside Demeter and as a part of the cult of Demeter and does not seem to have had a separate cult. Being a chthonic deity, black animals were sacrificed to her:
    [Sacrifices to the gods as witnesses of an oath:] Bring two lambs : let one be white and the other black for Gaia (Earth) and Helios (Sun). [N.B. Chthonic Gaia receives a black animal, celestial Helios a white one.]
