    I built my dream garage which holds 8 cars comfortably (2,300 SF). Suggestions of things to do now (because you will wish you did them later): Put in at least a half bath; lots of lighting and receptacles, putting some recessed receptacles/plugs around all the walls about 6 to 7 feet off the ground, this will allow you to plug in neon signs without seeing electrical cords running down the wall; polyaspartic floors, professionally installed, in a light to medium color flake combination; set aside a seating area where you can sit with buddies and watch a big screen TV. Also, if you can, build yourself an office area distinct from the parking area....you may want to have it on a separate hvac line/thermostat so you can keep the office area where you spend time more comfortable (cooler or warmer) than the rest of that huge space and save some money on HVAC costs. It will be interesting to watch your progress.

    @CC-mb8fi Před měsícem +69

    Depending on the configuration of your doors, run the mezzanine like an "L" over the lower door an d construct your stairs between the two doors. This is always dead space.
    By doing that, you can simply drive in, stop next to the stairs and offload stuff from your vehicle directly to your stairs. Much easier than trying to maneuver a vehicle to carry stuff.
    In the centre you can also explore a hoist across half the garage - 1 column in the centre between the doors, and over the mezzanine. That way heavier or bulky items can be lifted straight off the vehicle and moved upstairs.
    A 1000 pound hoist crane should be ok. Check for concrete thickness and reinforcing, but if its ok for a car lift it should be good to go.
    Btw - i am a retired civil and structural engineer if you wondering.....
    And an insane petrolhead

    Assuming this is your forever home (and forever garage), I wouldn’t recommend putting in a spiral staircase in. They just aren’t friendly to our aging bodies and the older we get the more we tend to avoid them, which for you means at some point that’ll make the loft pretty much a dead space if you put a spiral staircase in.

    From a farmer in the Dakotas, theres some things you should do to your shop while you still have the chance.
    1st, I know you feel you don't need a bathroom, but if you're going to have a workshop and maybe even a lounge area you need a bathroom, you'll thank yourself later when you don't have to walk to the house everytime. You don't need a shower, just a sink and toilet. This is one of the biggest regrets with our old farm shop. Not to mention having running water in front of the building to wash cars off would be very nice. A hot water spigot is a great addition too if you'd put a water heater in.
    2nd, for lights I'd highly highly recommend Hyperlite high bay halo lights. We put 14 150W lights in a 104x50 building and theyre fantastic, they'll light up your shop even better with the white insulation everywhere. Theyre in a bare cold storage building with a dirt floor on our's, and you'd think it was daytime inside. They also don't seem bothered by bitter cold. I've turned them on in -20 weather and they flipped right on.
    3rd, put radiant heat in. It keeps a shop so much warmer in the winter than forced air. All the warmth doesn't blow out the door when you open it like it tends to with forced air.
    4th, whatever you're building for a storage area, make it bigger than you plan, if you can. We built a 8'x16' parts room that is now overflowing with consumables, oil, filters, and parts. We actually plan to add another 8' this summer if we can. Granted ours is a farm shop, but the same will apply to a collector I am sure.
    I can't wait to see how your building turns out.

      Yes, rethink the "no bathroom" idea. It will be a huge pain in the middle of winter to have to gear up and walk through snow to the house. A shower is a great idea too. When you start doing your own work and get doused with oil or coolant you won't want to walk through the house like that.

    If you're going to be opening the big doors a lot, do a radiant heater. Little bit more up front, but FAR FAR more economical in the long run. Once it's in and running, they heat the objects in the room which then radiate heat into the room. So your cars themselves stay warm and heat the air. Vs a forced air system where you're simply heating the air and hoping it drifts around and heats other things. Big thing is that WHEN you open the doors, the cars (etc) don't get instantly cold - they keep radiating the stored energy as heat.

Used shipping containers make it easy to convert them off site, then wheel them into your garage and park them along that wall. Use the roof of the containers for additional storage. If you needs change just swap the module you want to change. Just my two cents.

Just thinking about the plastic sheet on the walls and a good protective medium could be to place thin laminated wood panels on a light wooden support frame. You can buy them with clear protective coating and they would be cheap and easy to replace if damaged and the base plastic sheeting is covered. Obviously you would only place a single panel all around to keep control of cost.

    You should make a old gas station front with a Route 66 road sign. Make a vintage looking Hoovie's gas station sign. I'd love to have a place like this but to design 1 would be even better!

    From my perspective, I'd do a simple bathroom there under the mezzanine level - you'll be glad you did later. I echo the comments on the spiral staircase - I wouldn't do that either, trying to get things up them is a major PITA and you have the space that a straight staircase isn't going to be a huge problem.
    That all said, congrats on the new building and the new beginning. Now we all get to watch what zany creations you come up with to stuff it full. 😀

    If you fitted solar panels to the roof, you'd be able to power all the AC you'd ever desire over the summer time, as well as power your farm house too, you could even get battery storage & backup and never pay electric bills over the summer and into the winter as long as the sun shines

    The garage looks great! Your insulation looks much nicer than a lot of shops I've seen. Adding steel walls to the bottom 8-10 feet is more than enough. Non glossy floor like Brian's is nice. I'd just stick to a double stack lift and not triple. Excited to see it all come together and make fun of your mechanic skills!

    A couple mini-split heat pumps or a larger central heat pump may be a good idea for HVAC in the building. Essentially they act as a air conditioner in summer but run in reverse in the winter to heat a space. Operating costs are way lower than that of a traditional gas furnace because this tech is inherently more energy efficient, plus if you're already installing AC then it should be about the same cost, but you'll also get heat out of it without having to buy a separate furnace. Bonus is that this system is also quieter than a furnace in theory. Love the shop, can't wait to see how you make it uniquely yours!

    • @insaneiaq

    • @tylerfineman8967
      @tylerfineman8967 Před měsícem

      @insaneiaq I was thinking it may be feasible if he had multiple mini splits along each wall that were adequately sized considering the insulation and lack of windows. I am by no means an expert however, so if I'm wrong I apologize.

    Tyler, you can paint the doors with special thermal reflective paint that lowers the temp by 20*-40*. You could paint the building but you'd really have to save up for that since the paint is rather expensive. You could just paint the side of the building that gets the most afternoon sun. You can also plant things like dwarf bamboo to shade the sides of the building. I'm not sure if that species can survive long Winters though. It's good since it grows fast and isn't messy like some conifers.

    If I was building this, I would put at least two 2-post lifts. And at least one 4-post lift. With a jack in the middle (like Freddy Tavarish has).
    Big air compressor and 1/2 inch hard lines for air lines to the lifts.
    A work area with big ass tool boxes and work benches. For cutting/grinding and welding.
    Maybe for someone else to come and help you work (or do some work that you can’t do).
    Water hose (and floor drain) to wash cars IN the shop, when it’s too cold - or hot - to stand outside for long!
    And a bathroom with a big sink to wash the hands - AND ARMS!
    If you’re going to work on your cars, you’ll need it!
    Toilet, shower, and small fridge. Because you don’t want to have to go back and forth in high heat - or extreme cold or rain - when you’re deep in the middle of a repair!
