A taste of conflict: The politics of food in Jerusalem - Street Food

  • The ancient city of Jerusalem is sacred to three different faiths: for Jews it is the site of their first holy temple; for Christians it is the scene of Jesus Christ's death and resurrection; and for Muslims it is the location of the Prophet Muhammad's ascent to heaven.
A site of vast historical and religious significance, this beautiful city is also a tragic one - fought over for centuries and coveted by millions who have never set foot in it. It is at the heart of the ongoing and seemingly irresolvable Israeli-Palestinian conflict and everything there is overshadowed by politics.
Jerusalem's old city enthralls with its bustling markets and vibrant street life, but inside its walls, tensions are never far from the surface. History is a dimension of the present and there is little unity to be found in a city which Palestinians regard as their occupied capital.
In the struggle for the soul of a city, even food - a marker of identity, an expression of history, culture, and values - plays a part, and the roots of certain foods are fiercely debated.
For Palestinians, denied a state and with a national identity which is constantly undermined, food plays an even greater role in defining who they are.
Almost half of Israeli Jews come from Middle Eastern backgrounds where their parents and grandparents lived alongside Arabs in countries such as Iraq, Yemen and Morocco. Many dishes are a reminder of the shared history and culture of Arabs and Jews - something easily forgotten in today's divided politics.
In a city where Israelis and Palestinians attach great meaning and symbolism to food - whether religious, political or both - we visit a unique place, Eucalyptus, which is jointly owned by Palestinians and Israelis.
There, we sample dishes made by an Israeli Jew, a Palestinian Muslim, an Armenian, and a Palestinian Christian who, as 'Chefs for Peace', cook together to bridge religious and political divides. Convinced that ignorance about the other is at the heart of the conflict, the chefs try to educate people about others' history, traditions, and culture through the medium of food.

It is difficult to fear or hate people when you love the taste of their food. I used to fear Iranians until I was exposed to Iranian food. Now I pray for the people of Iran to be well and prosper. Their political leaders may be bad but the common people are kind, generous and very gracious, even to foreigners. True fact.

@b king That is NOT true! ALL political leaders, in all countries, in these times are not good for the regular, every day people. I am a USA citizen and I have NO liking for my political leaders and their stupid policies. I have the same wishes and dreams of all normal, everyday people all around the world; To live it peace, to love all life, and to learn different ways from my multi-cultural neighbors.

@@muwuny Short version. In WWI, the British asked Arabs to fight with them against the Turkish who had control of the Middle East. For which support the British promised the Arabs dominion over their lands at the end of the war. The British promise was a lie and Palestine was given over to the Israelis as part of the Balfour Declaration. Further insult was given by the Sykes-Picot Agreement, which divided up the lands of the Middle East between the French and the British.

It's petty to fight over food, out of almost 200 nations in this world, somewhere, someplace, someone is cooking food that you thought only your people eat. Mexico is well known for their tortillas but I have seen videos of people from other countries, living in remote villages who make them as well. Just be grateful for what GOD has Created for us, food for us to enjoy.
Give Thanks to GOD every day.

    • @alyas3953
      @alyas3953 Před 5 lety +8

BalmOfGilead07 You’re not understanding the point of the video. Yes other people in the world eat Tortillas, but everyone knows that Tortillas are Mexican food. If America were to claim that tortillas or enchiladas are American, there would be a lot of backlash.
The point of the video is to highlight the Palestinian identity and struggle, when it comes to politics and food.
Palestinians have lost land, homes, families, etc, and they feel that their food and culture is all they have. And when other nations claim it as there own, its not only stealing and appropriating ones culture, but it’s also denying the Palestinian existence altogether.

@@yorksfolly1255 Hebrew, the language of the Jews, predates the Arabic language by 4000 years. Islam, the religion that Arabs left Arabia to spread across the Levant/Maghreb, was largely influenced by Judaism. In fact, Muhammad himself spent the first half of his life attempting to convert the Jews to his new religion.
There are synagogues across the region which are older than Arabic itself.
So no, Jews as a nation with a shared language/religion/heritage predate Arabs in MENA by at least 1000 years.

And there is nothing you can do about it. You screwed up in 1948 by refusing Partition. You screwed up again in 21967 by attac king Israel a 2nd time. One screw up after another. Israeli street food is, without a doubt, the most dynamic and exciting on Earth. Palestinian food is good but stuck in a very narrow vein. Israeli food, on the other hand, reflects the influence of their diverse population - Russian, Mid East, European, African - even those who've escaped Islamic nations with their recipes. Perhaps the dumbest idea in the last few years is "appropriation", NO country has a monopoly on any food. The idea is absurd. If enforced we would never eat pasta, sushi, tacos, crepes - not to mention foreign cheese, wines and fruit. No one outside the South would eat friend chicken, whites would not eat corn bread or greens and what about spices.
