A taste of conflict: The politics of food in Jerusalem - Street Food

- The ancient city of Jerusalem is sacred to three different faiths: for Jews it is the site of their first holy temple; for Christians it is the scene of Jesus Christ's death and resurrection; and for Muslims it is the location of the Prophet Muhammad's ascent to heaven.
A site of vast historical and religious significance, this beautiful city is also a tragic one - fought over for centuries and coveted by millions who have never set foot in it. It is at the heart of the ongoing and seemingly irresolvable Israeli-Palestinian conflict and everything there is overshadowed by politics.
Jerusalem's old city enthralls with its bustling markets and vibrant street life, but inside its walls, tensions are never far from the surface. History is a dimension of the present and there is little unity to be found in a city which Palestinians regard as their occupied capital.
In the struggle for the soul of a city, even food - a marker of identity, an expression of history, culture, and values - plays a part, and the roots of certain foods are fiercely debated.
For Palestinians, denied a state and with a national identity which is constantly undermined, food plays an even greater role in defining who they are.
Almost half of Israeli Jews come from Middle Eastern backgrounds where their parents and grandparents lived alongside Arabs in countries such as Iraq, Yemen and Morocco. Many dishes are a reminder of the shared history and culture of Arabs and Jews - something easily forgotten in today's divided politics.
In a city where Israelis and Palestinians attach great meaning and symbolism to food - whether religious, political or both - we visit a unique place, Eucalyptus, which is jointly owned by Palestinians and Israelis.
There, we sample dishes made by an Israeli Jew, a Palestinian Muslim, an Armenian, and a Palestinian Christian who, as 'Chefs for Peace', cook together to bridge religious and political divides. Convinced that ignorance about the other is at the heart of the conflict, the chefs try to educate people about others' history, traditions, and culture through the medium of food.

It is difficult to fear or hate people when you love the taste of their food. I used to fear Iranians until I was exposed to Iranian food. Now I pray for the people of Iran to be well and prosper. Their political leaders may be bad but the common people are kind, generous and very gracious, even to foreigners. True fact.
@b king That is NOT true! ALL political leaders, in all countries, in these times are not good for the regular, every day people. I am a USA citizen and I have NO liking for my political leaders and their stupid policies. I have the same wishes and dreams of all normal, everyday people all around the world; To live it peace, to love all life, and to learn different ways from my multi-cultural neighbors.
The common man is a sweet person in ALL civilizations.
amarica is bad
Even to foreigners? Especially to foreigners!
Just we live this life to the fullest without any thought of differentiating the backgrounds religions, skins.
When I was studying in Europe, when ever I miss home, I go look for Arabic food. But I am Asian from the Philippines! I guess the nationality of food is hungry people. :)
😂🤣That's not 🧀 y that's awesome. I always loved going to different churches/mosques and letting them explain their cullinary arts. So many countries in one place, it's a blessing to see people break bread.
Best conversations are at the table.
Are you an OFW? Very normal hahah
Indians were arrested for picking up salt on their own land by British so I am not surprised if the man was arrested for picking up zatar for his mother on his own land what can you expect from people were brought by British to occupy other people's land.
How were they brought by the British? They fought against the British with American backing for independence from them.
@@muwuny Short version. In WWI, the British asked Arabs to fight with them against the Turkish who had control of the Middle East. For which support the British promised the Arabs dominion over their lands at the end of the war. The British promise was a lie and Palestine was given over to the Israelis as part of the Balfour Declaration. Further insult was given by the Sykes-Picot Agreement, which divided up the lands of the Middle East between the French and the British.
That kind of thing ruins your summer more so than stubble burning.
@@muwuny Did you crawl out of a rock after 70 years?
@@jauld360 >Palestine was given over to the Israelis as part of the Balfour Declaration
Except it wasn't, the Balfour deceleration was just that, a declaration, the Israelis didn't get control over Palestine until 1946.
There is a huge Israeli conspiracy to prevent Hamas, Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, The Muslim Brotherhood, The Taliban, Islamic Jihad, ISIS, Saddam Hussein, Ayatollah Khomeini, Osama Bin Laden, Bashar Assad, Muammar al-Gaddafi and President Putin from bringing peace to the world!!!!!
Chefs for Peace!!!! Bless you!!! We are all on this space rock together & we have so many things to share. Food is a great start!!
to the light of the ethnic cleansing since 90 days ... it did not work and the zionists do not want peace but to kill all us Then take Full credit of our culture
I loved this - thanks for posting! I'm Irish/Jewish/Cornish and heaven knows what else-ish and have ALWAYS been interested in cooking and tasting new food. And the simplest, like the lentil soup, is often the very very best ...
I’m irish/Romanian/Muslim from America! ✌🏼
Great video done professionally with lots of respect and fine feeling. Greetings from a grateful Jewish viewer from Germany.
"Ignorance of the other is at the heart of the conflict in Israel". I agree with that phrase.
Awww, after stealing the land , bulldozing the olive groves and poisoning the water supplies the oppressers need to eat hummus and claim it as there own !
Exactly, it seems like no one in these comments understands why this is wrong. Colonizing bastards even made falafel their national dish; are you serious!!
These Chefs just proved that peace can exist in Israel. As one of the Chefs said, it's not the people, but the government that prevents peace.
and governments aren't people, of course xD
@@corbeau-_- They certainly don't act like humans👹

i am Indian , and i visited Israel recently and was surprised when i tasted this lentil soup at 18:58 , we have a similar dish called DAL , which is a very ancient Indian dish , and it tasted exactly the same.... Palestine and Israel have amazing vegetarian food. middle eastern vegetarian food is my favorite even though people say the best vegetarian food is India.
Brother Your lucky........... Did you enjoy homas & shwarma
Indian Jews brought Indian cuisine. Love India and your food.
DAL is absolutely delicious I order that every time along with chana at my favorite Indian restaurant where I live (Bay Area California) although I’m sure it doesn’t compare to having it in India
I Love Lentil soup too. We have that kind of soup too in our country.
Visit Turkey if possible, you can see so many that are similar to Indian foods, like kheer, buttermilk/lassi (Airan), and many other..
Very well presented. Thank you.
I CANT EXPRESS THE EMOTION I FELT FROM THIS !!!

Simply a masterpiece in documentary making!
What unite people is what we should cherish and celebrate and what divide people is what we must loathe. Hope we spread the message of tolerance and respect for each other irrespective of our biases and we all become the citizen of diverse rainbow nation and cherish the bliss the diversity brings.
Now I have a craving for hummus.
Michael Matherne the same here
Served with bell peppers and bread!
Michael Matherne ✌️
and falafel too
It take me ten minutes to make, we eat it almost daily
bad idea to watch this early morning... really makes you hungry! seems the food is so tasty. Shalom! Salaam! to the eternal city.

Fabulous video, love is food shared the world over...that's all I want to say about that !
Hi Victoria
Nice meeting you 🌹🌹
Despite the hate, wars and other problems we know today from the Middle East, I still find their culture beautiful. Rich in spices, colors and diversity from a long history from various of trades. :)
It was diverse before the thieves arrive in 1948 ... they did not bring anything else food wise ... they just Stole
praying for peace, maybe never with how things go but we can keep hoping at least. Host is stunning and food looks amazing
At 12:13 i had to order myself a shawarma and some falafel nuggets. Thats about the only kind of middle eastern fastfood we can get where I'm at. But i just had to, couldn't go further without those flavours in my mouth. It gave me The cravings
The food looks and tastes Beautiful.
beautiful, yet so sad that we can be so divided as human beings
Eucalyptus Restaurant well well done, you are a perfect example for everyone.
The world is so beautiful and interesting, I wish we would all live in peace an harmony.
Hopefully one day
thank you for these nice words - why dont you give them YOUR house , your food , your dignité and then live in peace and harmony
chefs for peace is where it's at 👌
The fundamental issue of any conflict is that people try to control that is ever changing and try to own the biggest piece of it.

I have always had a love for the culture of the Levant, and someday maybe wish to visit and experience the cuisine, sites, culture and pray there. Very good food.
Very nice to see...
I enjoyed the part about Thyme ,and how they eat it on bread
Me too. It is precious delishus.Yum.
It's petty to fight over food, out of almost 200 nations in this world, somewhere, someplace, someone is cooking food that you thought only your people eat. Mexico is well known for their tortillas but I have seen videos of people from other countries, living in remote villages who make them as well. Just be grateful for what GOD has Created for us, food for us to enjoy.
Give Thanks to GOD every day.
BalmOfGilead07 You’re not understanding the point of the video. Yes other people in the world eat Tortillas, but everyone knows that Tortillas are Mexican food. If America were to claim that tortillas or enchiladas are American, there would be a lot of backlash.
The point of the video is to highlight the Palestinian identity and struggle, when it comes to politics and food.
Palestinians have lost land, homes, families, etc, and they feel that their food and culture is all they have. And when other nations claim it as there own, its not only stealing and appropriating ones culture, but it’s also denying the Palestinian existence altogether.
Amen
@@alyas3953 Tortillas come from Spain.
Alice Wilde Thanks for clarifying! I wasn’t too sure at first, I thought either Mexico or Spain. :)
MoMo Tortillas are not “Mexican” food. In Spain a tortilla is a flat and very thin egg pancake. Some are a little thicker with potatoes in it. A tortilla in Spain is very different from a tortilla in Mexico.
The food is good thank goodness i have the Jerusalem bakery close by where i stay. But staying focus fasting and praying.blessing to all.
Yes to food and peace, nice video, many thanks
Excellent work 💯💯💯

Israelis and Palestinians...2 brothers' children...same grandfather...Abraham. wish the world would stop focusing on differences and see our commonalities.
Food knows no borders
It does. Food must stay within half a meter of me, otherwise I start eating people
Sure it does where would I get baby back ribs or bacon and eggs or ham and eggs?
Food knows my stomach.
It totally does. There are all kinds of export restrictions, for businesses as well as travelers.
Also, some foods only don't exist or are difficult to find in some places because of national borders and support infrastructure.
I would say food has its cultural identity! In the absence of whatever restrictions -- medical, religious, etc. -- everyone is welcome to try it!
Food is also an acquired taste! Some foods are not liked by some but others do & vice versa.
In my case, I like exploring various foods/recipes from various culture & history!
as if Al Jazeera is unbiased and objective toward Israel!
Why can't all the Muslims, Jews, Christians and other religion join together, eating different foods, exchanging dishes, better culture understanding through different cuisines
That's not enough... they need to start join orgies to enjoy getting along.
Because organized religions DIVIDE. In fact, all ideologies, religious or political, they DIVIDE, they never unite, they've never united anyone or any group in the whole history of mankind.
what is that bread called they eat with thyme dip? could not understand properly. thanks.
Manakish is the flat, round bread topped with Zaatar. Ka'ak is the ring shaped bread, which was featured at the start of the section on Zaatar.
Oh super! Thanks. I'll look out for that. Maybe even a recipe! Already planning on the thyme dip...
I get so hungry for this food just watching the video!
I would love to go there just to try the food...yummy !
you have palestinian - middle eastern food in all major city since millions of us are living in Exile
As a Canadian, I have not tried this food yet. What should I try first to see if I like it?
By now, surely you've tried hummus? If not, that's a great start. I prefer it on the lemon-y side. And definitely try za'atar, or one of its main ingredients, sumac (also lemon-y). From there, it's up to you :) Enjoy!
My hat off to the Chefs for Peace. (From an Austrian Chef now living in Moscow). My Credo was, is and will be always GOOD FOOD, ONE OF THE FEW PLEASURES OF MANKIND.
beautiful host
Someone tell me what is this guy doing 7:06 and what is that marvelous contraption on his back
I suspect that he is selling Sharab Tamr Hendi or Erk Sous. I do not know the Arabic name of the urn.
Thanks

Have your halaal/haraam rhetoric (meaning to all Semites) but be loving to each other ... your Jerusalem is lovely ... peace to each one of you
All the food looks so yummy.
Very good reporting. Well done! Better than CNN.
It was never a conflict.. it was colonisation
The most disheartening thing is for an oppressed people to turn into oppressors.
I love u Mona.... God bless...
it a nice documentary
where are u from?
hey, neat! Check out the waiter's 'tray' @4:55 this way he doesn't have to balance a tray on three fingertips, wow!
Was I really going to read the commentaries and expecting a calm, sophisticated and respectful discussion about food in Jerusalem? Oh je...
Realistically many Jews came from the Maghreb. So to say Jews only started eating this food is not exact.
Half of jews are mizrahi, so they have been eating middle eastern food for centuries
That is right but the origins of this dish are from Maghreb then right?
Palestinians came from Irak.Iran,Jordania,Egypte.
@@tropicalstrings they know, that is why they/Jews, other, themselves. In the middle of Arabs.
@@RukiaBlackBlazer explain
What a beauty!!!!
Just like Al Jazeera with their political agenda, humus is a n ancient middle eastern dish. It was not invented by Palestinians.
Food is dynamic, each culture adds its own variant to a dish.
Wow, this is a comment i can agree with. I made a similar comment above.
It’s not Jewish food. It was introduced to Jews by Levantine Arabs.
@@lweil9291 No It wasnt Jews lived in Egypt( birthplace of hummus) before there were any arabs living the area. Mizrahi, Sephardi Jews have eaten for a long time.
@@huntinginpoland2396 to say no arabs lived in the levant or where living at the same time as the jews or coming in as travelers into juda when guess what ARABIA is right there next to it is one of the dumbest thing i have ever heard
@@yorksfolly1255 Hebrew, the language of the Jews, predates the Arabic language by 4000 years. Islam, the religion that Arabs left Arabia to spread across the Levant/Maghreb, was largely influenced by Judaism. In fact, Muhammad himself spent the first half of his life attempting to convert the Jews to his new religion.
There are synagogues across the region which are older than Arabic itself.
So no, Jews as a nation with a shared language/religion/heritage predate Arabs in MENA by at least 1000 years.
congratulations everyone on our beautiful culinary Hair-ahhhh- taigh.

So you have kosher food. That you cannot understand why it is kosher or why adhere to kosher laws. Sounds absurd if am honest.

Well done. I didn't see any bias in this.
The Palestinians were offered a State in 1948 but turned it down so BS that they were denied a State.
Offered???? It's their land!!!!! Occupied, imagine someone taking your house by force then OFFERING you the bathroom to live in. Get real..
It's also Jewish land. Jews were the majority in Jerusalem since years.Jews have always lived there. And you Arabs forced us Jews to flee Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Iraq etc. You stole our land. The Romans also stole our land, destroyed our Temple and forced us to flee. We came back. And there is nothing you can do about it. You screwed up in 1948 by refusing Partition. You screwed up again in 21967 by attac king Israel a 2nd time. One screw up after another. You could have had a State by now. Oh by the way you stole your land in 1948??? Jordan stole your land in 1948. So stop crying Wolf. It's like a tired tape recorder.

Food is food. Why they make the simplest thing so complicated???
I love zaatar and didn’t know the politics behind it in Israel :(
Israeli street food is, without a doubt, the most dynamic and exciting on Earth. Palestinian food is good but stuck in a very narrow vein. Israeli food, on the other hand, reflects the influence of their diverse population - Russian, Mid East, European, African - even those who've escaped Islamic nations with their recipes. Perhaps the dumbest idea in the last few years is "appropriation", NO country has a monopoly on any food. The idea is absurd. If enforced we would never eat pasta, sushi, tacos, crepes - not to mention foreign cheese, wines and fruit. No one outside the South would eat friend chicken, whites would not eat corn bread or greens and what about spices.
Tell me you’re privileged without telling me you’re privileged
@@suzannenobel6809 WTF does privilege have to do with food variety? Jesus!
Palestine one day, will be free. It's illegal to Palestinians to pick the herb however freely available to be sold in Isreal. I absolutely hope and pray someone out there can help fund those Palestinian women to grow their business. Beautiful food. Great work chefs! Food knows no borders!
Palestine already is free. They have their states (Jordan and Gaza) they also; as Arabs; have 714X as much land as Israel.
Hey, don't forget the vegetables, humus, falafel & flat bread, food of the gods !
Really? no food self proclaimed they're gods.
In actual fact, all vegetarian food, is food of the gods (not animal flesh) only one who is awakened realizes the truth.
