San José, Costa Rica - Welcome to San José, the capital and biggest city in Costa Rica, and one of the best places to eat Costa Rican food. Today we’re going on an ultimate Costa Rica street food tour, from the market to local restaurants and everything in between. Let’s go eat!
First of all a huge thank you to:
- Yeison and Samantha, follow them @mytanfeet
- Alex and Roberto from Chepe Cletas Tours
For taking me on this unforgettable Costa Rican food tour.
Mercado Central de San José (San José Central Market) - We’re beginning this tour at the central market in San Jose, the best place to take in the sights, sounds and ingredients of Costa Rica. Soda Tala, San José Central Market (goo.gl/maps/w8k4P79QsErSDuW96) is without a doubt one of the city’s best stalls, known for their Gallo Pinto (Rice and beans) - the national dish of Costa Rica. We also tried Marisquería Brigitte for their Cadosas (Ceviche with Picaritas chips), which is something else you don’t want to miss. Finally, La Sorbetera de Lolo Mora is a perfect sweet finish to any market tour in San Jose.
Super Cholo Gigante at Super Cholo Gigante, San José Meat Market - After walking around the market, we then headed to the Meat Market and in the back there’s a restaurant that specializes in bocas, or small places of food. Here you can get all the classic Costa Rican foods, authentic and cooked to perfection.
Empanadas at La Empanadota - You can’t come to Costa Rica without trying an empanada and everyone seems to have their favorite. When they are deep fried hot and fresh and drizzled in five sticky sauces, they are hard to resist.
Next up with tried Costa Rican Coffee at Café La Mancha (goo.gl/maps/SikNtuwndA759Uvi9) and it was the perfect afternoon boost.
And finally we tried some unique Ice cream at the famous Corazón Contento Pastelería, San José, Costa Rica (goo.gl/maps/KGvnTQ6Cv7pEN4wg6)
Again, thank you to Yeison and Samantha from My Tan Feet, and Alex and Roberto from Chepe Cletas Tours for taking me around San Jose, Costa Rica!

Isn't it fascinating how Brazilians and Costa Ricans share so much in common, including our daily staple of rice and beans? If it weren't for the language barrier, our countries could have even stronger bonds. ¡Amor desde Brasil a Costa Rica!
Lot of Costaricans speak Portuguese
Come on dude. Rice and beans. Really ?
@@paulnhbtx713 what do you mean, really? I'm Puertorican and we also eat rice and beans.
@@paulnhbtx713exactly lol. Related over beans and rice hahahahaha 😂😂😂
They have no army, so good luck with that! At least, the neighboring countries have one, like Nicaragua.
I think that everyone in their lifetime should visit Costa Rica! Their nature is from another world! Beautiful country
Bello comentario❤
PURA VIDAAAAA MAE❗️
Thanks for loving my beautiful country
Can't wait to return and visit the market.
Next time you visit Costa Rica you need to travel to Limón, it’s Caribbean food is amazing!
En especial el Rice n beans soooo good men
Cierto, ojalá regrese y venga a Limón. 💚
Part #2 in the carribean!!! ❤❤ You need to go, is it an important culinary culture site of Costa Rica.
The only difference is that use coconut in some of their dishes plus the spicey of the panamnian peppers but that also make very very greasy high on saturated fats I can only eat a dish like that once a week so amazing NO you can get the same in other place except with out the coconut taste.

He’s so grateful… and humble … that’s what’s so nice about him .
He's making the most out of the ketchup and Mayo chips, bless his heart ❤
I lived in San Jose for two years. It there is anything I miss about it, it's the food. I still frequently make Gallo Pinto here in the States.
i will get gallopinto on pay day and eat it on your honor
Gallo pinto is originally from Nicaragua not CR .
@@chevycamarogmail No sea tan payaso!
@@chevycamarogmail At the end pinto is mostly associated with CR not Nicaragua, also ours adds culatantro (don't confuse with cilantro), red sweet pepper and the traditional Lizano sauce that is similar to a Worcestershire sauce.
@@SayonaraCommit I find Salsa Lizano to be more similar to A1 Steak Sauce.
I was surprised that many Costa Ricans speak English, it is clear that they are a very educated population and not to mention their gastronomy, which goes almost unnoticed in the world but is clearly delicious!!!
as a tico, in schools, they teach English nearly as much as they teach Spanish, so thats why, greetings from CR :)
Obvio papi, aquí somos super tuanis, booooboclat!!
Claro, que por supuesto, que yes 😂
So if people don't SPEACK English they not well educated?
Was lucky enough to live in costa rica in the mid 90s. Absolutely was the highlight of my life. Will go back some day!
Is amazing that most of the places you visited people speak really good English. Hope you enjoyed your visit in our beautiful country Costa Rica 🇨🇷 ❣️ I love your videos.
Hello Mark ! I am french but my Father is Vietnamese, i lived 9 years in Costa Rica in Atenas 15 minutes away from San Jose , funny thing is that i never went to those places in San Jose! I still LOVE Costa Rica and the people i ve learned to know, what a beautiful Country ❣️❣️❣️Hope that you will there a bit longer before you leave because San Jose is Not the best place to go and tasting Foods.
Big fan of you since Vietnam and Thailand food journeys 😁🤗. Thank you for the great work!! 🤗
I just love the way he talks about everything… he’s so positive and really appreciates all 😍 Costa Rica es el mejor lugar del mundo 🩵🥰
Visited Costa Rica before to film one of our TV show episode and I can vouch this! It's the kind of cuisine that says, 'Let's make the simple spectacular!' Aside from their interesting cuisine where ''satisfaction meets spice', it's full of adventure you'll definitely fall in love with!
Pura Vida! Loved every minute I spent in Costa Rica 🇨🇷. Drove from San Jose to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. What a change of scenery reminded me so much of the Rift Valley region in Kenya but way greener. I’m definitely going back the hospitality was amazing.
you're always more than welcome 🇨🇷
Costa Rica is fantastic. The biodiversity is beyond amazing
Costa Rican here, just want to clarify what the guy at 30:32 said, gallo in Costa Rica means a small portion of food, usually eaten with a tortilla, but not necessarily.
Thanks for coming to my country! you always have such positive energy I think it matches perfectly with our pura vida vibes haha
Amo demasiado el acento tico en inglés, gracias por monchar (comer) en el mercado central
Mark, I lived in Costa Rica when I was a child and you just made me miss Costa Rica so much more ❤
Costa Rica seems very cool, wish to have a chance visiting someday
Mmm that plantain with the cheese melted on top looks soooo good!
My girlfriend from Michigan retired and moved to Costa Rica,i hope to visit her some day .
Hey Mark, love the video! We had a great time eating with you, hope you can come back to try some more food! Grateful to be part of your first Costa Rican food experience. See you soon!!
So awesome you got to meet Mark and excited he finally made it here to Costa Rica!
That was awesome. Looking forward to my return in January.
The best part of this video was Mark quoting Outkast... "So fresh and so clean!"
After all these years following you around behind a screen, you've finally arrived in my hometown!
PURA VIDA MARK!
PS. We briefly met at the Westin in Guatemala during breakfast. Thank you to your family for the time and the picture!
Pura vidaaaaa
I can't believe he finally came to Costa Rica, I'm so happy to see him here.
Bros eyes started watering when he drank the turtle eggs 😂😂😂 he had to pretend to like it in front of everyone 😂😂😂
lol 😂😂😂
Mark quoting Outkast with the "So fresh, so clean" :D
CR is not known for its cuisine but you can't complain about her fresh ingredients. I'm looking forward to traveling there again at end of month and can't wait to bite into a Jacote along with with Pejibaye. Holiday tamales might be also start being made which are my favorite.. If you're still there, must try a Olla de Carne soup which every auntie there makes well.
Pejibaye with mayo is a bomb
this makes me so excited for my upcoming trip next week. First thing on my agenda...FOOD!🤗
Mark is so nice 😂 but Mark come on, we all know you didn’t like that drink with the turtle eggs. 😂 you almost hacked it up. 😂 love his content
😂 facts lol I had to search and search to see if someone said something about it LOL his eyes were watering and everything 😭 😂
lol yep his eyes! 😆@@thesylliest6627
I mean, it ain't tasty lmao 😂
on to top it off he got the extra, extra, extra large version from the owner! 😆😂
Thank you for coming to my country and trying our delicious food. I hope you come back, and truly, thank you for creating this space for the world to get to know my country a little more. God bless you.
Love what sounds like Micah's endorsement of the ceviche!
The energy and excitement makes everything better the food looks amazing ❤
Just watched your video on the food in San Jose. You made me so excited to go there. I love your enthusiasm. We’re going there in January next year and I can’t wait try out some of the food at the market. Would be awesome to travel with you!
We're all watching Micah grow up before our eyes!!!
Costa rica street food is amazing 😋
¡Tengo que decirte por qué viniste a Costa Rica!
El primer video me hizo querer verlo.
Pura Vida ! I am really looking forward to the Costa Rica videos. I love the country for the beautiful natur, flora, fauna and very lovely people. I have to admit that I wasnt a huge fan of the food, but maybe thanks to you Mark, I will see another side of the food in beautiful Costa Rica.
After waching the video, I realise some reasons why I am not so entuistactic about Costa Rican food as you:
- I rarely eat meat, and I dont eat offals
- I dont have 4 guides when I visit and eat
- I get normal treatment, and dont get free meals, special attentions, special treatment etc. like you do at some places
I dont mean that as a critisms. I like your style and your videos a lot and its normal and well earned that you sometimes get a special treatment. Its just not how us "normals" experience it.
How are you a foodie and rarely eat meat? That eliminates a lot of cuisine from every culture. You don’t have to be a celebrity to get great treatment, if you order a restaurant’s full menu they will treat you well because you’re making them a profit. I ask the owner/manager/chefs basic questions about their cuisine and they will happily explain it to you if they’re proud of their food.
@@Dee0336 Not eating meat often doesnt meant that I cant be a foodie. Food is one of the most important things when I travel. And when its important and really traditional, I will eat meat. And yes, I almost ever get great treatments in restaurants, especially if tell them that I like their food. But still, I am certain that a person like Mark will get another treatment than a normal customer. Thats absolutely okay for me, and I dont mind it. I just wanted to point it out.
@@swissfoodie3542 the amount of different types of fuits and vegetables you can get in Costa Rica is just crazy, there's so many microclimates here, rain forests, cloud forest, dry forest, etc, etc
Welcome to Costa Rica 🇨🇷 pura vida 🫶🏻

Delicious costa rican street food thanks Mark♥️
I hv never seen in my life
I love Co-guide Samanta
So cute
Amazing to see you here!!! welcome to Costa Rica
Absolutely loved this video. You definitely tried to cover as much as possible and show lesser known dishes, which one really loves even more than the famous ones and that's amazin... you show that it isn't just gallo pinto and casado...one could come with a list of dozens to hundreds of different dishes that capture the essence of my country, at least this one that is mostly the gastronomy of the Central Valley and neighboring regions.
I see you made another video about Nicoya (food from Guanacaste province), a different and delicious food tradition, so I'll definitely give it a look. Caribbean food from Limón province would fill another program. I just love the food from my country.
Mark Wiens-Costa Rica beautiful place authentic delicacy, people sound Spanish enjoy the taste of drinks and food nice vlog.
Everything looks great and delicious 😋❤
love the video, amazing
Yes, I am so glad you finally visited my country. Thank you for such an amazing video. ❤ 🇨🇷

Helloooo Mark.. Me and my husband have been your fans since long. We are very excited you came to our beautiful country, Costa Rica. Hope you liked it and hope you come back!
Mark is man!!! I love how he is willing to try anything. He’s very good at explaining what he tastes. We need to to do an episode in Nicaragua 🇳🇮 mark … blessings

Chifrijo is the best! We will be filming at a hidden gem soda in Nicoya in a couple weeks that looks like it has good Olla de Carne. Can't wait to try it and let everyone know what it's like!
@@TheDufresnes the one with Cubaces (a type of bean similar to red kidney beans) is the best. You should also try Rice and Beans, which is similar to Gallo Pinto but prepared with coconut and panameño pepper; served with caribbean style chicken, salad and fried ripe plantains.

Excellent! "Do you know the way to San Jose?" I think you do, Mark! I enjoy watching this episode very much. Thank you!
wow oh wow
My first job was at a shave ice shack and La Sorbetera reminded me so much of it! I would double fist the syrups and pour condensed milk on top. We called it "snow cap" though. We had about a hundred combos and the red one Mark had looked like a popular one called Mustang Sally! What an exciting tour 🍧
Ah man just discovered this channel! I'm in Andorra currently and I haven't discovered the local food yet! I make videos whilst traveling the world but don't do any local food reviews! He's doing this so right! Much to learn
The difference of a vlog w fixers is that its narrated third person, instead of discovered in first person with the people who live it.
True, we love to find little restaurants and experience them first hand as we film. Makes it very authentic for us and our audience. We filmed at a place called Big Momma's Kitchen near Playa Conchal here in Costa Rica. We didn't expect too much when we got there, but the experience was amazing. We arrived as strangers and left as friends.
When going from country to country I see that you take part in on the preparing the food and cooking it too.best way to learn about the people is the food, and going from places to places.
FINALLYY!! I was wondering when the Day will come and its here Mark Wiens in my country Costa Rica, enjoy!!!! (I wish i could run into you one day)
as an Ethiopian i like the coffee mood.❤
Hey Mark welcome to my country paradise, Costa Rica, enjoy our food and welcome!!!
