Your video of the Yavin 4 base prototype remains one of my favourites, it was a high-effort, very interesting insight on a rather unknown Lego Star Wars fact.
Since I wasn't that interested in this 2023 playset, this comparison is all I could've asked for, showing tons of details and how the theme as a whole has evolved since 15 years ago. It's exactly the sort of unique content that I'm subscribed for!

Im so happy you did this. It feels like a difference between night and day. My only question is what happened to the Lego talent from 15 years ago and why are the quality of sets declining?
this is the most delusional opinion I've ever seen. the talent at lego only has ever been improving and really the only issues were seeing now with lego star wars is shrinkflation and weird inconsistencies that don't make the set bad as a whole, but just aren't the greatest. the old one is literally a moc, and an ugly one at that. never would lego release a set like that and if they did release a yavin 4 in 2008 it definitely would not have looked like the prototype at all. the new yavin 4 is clearly inspired by the old one, and is the best yavin 4 we could've gotten. i assure you if this set released in 2008 it would NOT have looked this good.

I think the 2008 set wins for me. Since LEGO has access to the pieces through production, I think the suggested retail price would need to be $275.00! So many times I go to build a LEGO MOC or to complete one, I end up giving up, because, I'm shoveling out an awful lot of money for not just parts but also shipping. Although I appreciate the new set's compactedness and details. Would you ever consider trying to combine two of the 2023 sets on a large baseplate?😂
while the 2023 version is the more visually pleasing (except the 4+ tree) the prototype does look better with size and play value, especially with the overall shape of the prototype yavin
The price comparison is not really fair, considering you had to reproduce the model using 3rd party re-sellers for parts, that obviously sold them with a profit to you.
I could easily see the old one being sold for the same price as the new one, if lego would still be creating baseplates and such.
Yea i dont know the markup or ratio that is official set, to price of its parts on the market, but it should exist, since if not why buy official sets.
Also in regards to the flaws of the set, well it was a prototype, the X-wing would have been reworked and made sturdier and with the watchtower could have just added one of those thin line pieces in the middle to attach it better.
personally prefer the prototype. Even though its incomplete and all it feels way more like what i would want out of the Yavin 4 set than what we got.

The size of the actual base itself in the prototype build is great though! Love the briefing room in particular compared to the new one.
The thing i like about the prototype model is the layout of the set but the excecution of the new set is just amazing
Comparing the value here isn't fair, as it would have cost Lego far less to produce the 2008 model, while you had to pay inflated prices due to part rarity. Lego, however, would artificially inflate the price and the community would blame the baseplate.

In defense of the proto type set it is kind of a place holder for a completed set. I just had way more hype and hope that a fleshed out set would have been more substantial than a 4+ set.
Comparing these isnt fair, becase the prototype is A PROTOTYPE. Also Prize would been way cheaper, becase lego produces pieces

shluld have done a true kid version half yhe price with half the crap or doubled down and done a full scale ucs style set and made it proper...feels like they split it down the middle and beither side of the customer base is happy

When the leaks happened I was really hoping for more fleet troopers. I was also super excited but I feel like it’s super undersized. Going to wait for this to go on discount.
I think its good we at least got a fighter that can actually fit a pilot, but I think at this price-range we should get a proper minifig-sclae fighter.
Given, it is better, I expected a micro-fighter based on the rumors. What would you call this?

In the visual dictionary page 91 on the right of Yavin 4 it states that "An unreleased sketch model of the Rebel Base on Yavin 4. Designers in the LEGO Star Wars team make many product suggestions and keep all Thier sketch models,even when,as in this case with this one, there are no plans to issue them as sets

This was an interesting episode. Thanks for trying something different and for making the investment on the prototype build. It’s a good illustration why prototypes are conceived to begin with and how they morph into production. It’s possible that prototype was sitting around the Lego studio for much longer than a year, based on the size and the rather unwieldy build of the X-Wing. The process of bringing any product to market is lengthy and complex, although 15 years seems abnormally long. It makes me wonder if Lego holds customer clinics to better determine set popularity. In the auto business, customer clinics are keystone programs in the lead-up to a new vehicle introduction. And many things can change following a clinic, especially one in which the vehicle is not well received. Thanks for the great content, Ryan. It’s appreciated.

Not that you'll probably read this, but have you ever used your Yavin 4 base but swap everything over for the Rogue one Yavin 4 scene. So many lego figures appear in that scene, nearly all troopers, main characters plus all the extra droids, chopper, r3 m2, c3po red arm. Senator Organa, Raddus, Mon mothma, even Wedge is there somewhere as you hear his voice in it. I'm slowly doing one.
just adding a baseplate for the 2023 set would absolutely make it better 10 times
I love the new Rebel hero Luke I've always wanted to use that outfit in a stop-motion but the problem was I always wanted him without The Medallion and couldn't do that with the original minifigure but now I can

When I was younger I wanted massive grand sets but now I actually prefer smaller scale. My favorite biggest set is the Cantina because it’s like my “hub” just like in the games and then I like the newer smaller ships along with it like Boba Fett’s Starship

Honestly, I really like the Yavin 4 base. Sure, it’s 8+, but it has good minifigures, some pretty good builds and if you have the Boarding The Tantive set, you can make a small rebel army.
Serious question what you can do with this small y-Wing from this set if you have 75172?

it is really not meant like that. It would be cool for the enterance to be bigger but it doesnt have to be in my opinion

Think during his original vid on the yavin protoype he was inside that lego set design program and planned the set out, so he might still have a file of that somewhere.

I'd love to see someone take 3-4 of the 2023 version and make a "UCS" Yavin IV. It's a nice set but it's too small in my opinion

The moc that you build is very cool, I just suggest, you can combine those two and make a giant yavin 4 base, that would look good , again, it's just a suggestion

The classic is what I will always picture when thinking of a yavin set cause the visual dictionary. I also rather the light tan colour so the prototype beats the new one in my opinion

Great comparison however, a lot the parts you bought for the prototype are retired and definitely would have been a lot cheaper back in the day plus you are comparing something incomplete like lego would never have let something like the x-wing in that sort of shape make it to the final product. I did enjoy this and hope you get to similar videos like this.
