    • @DanielRichards644
      @DanielRichards644 Před 7 lety +4

      Are Epyc processors not built using the same CCX modules as the Ryzen desktop counterparts? Thats kinda how AMD is able to price this shit so well, using the scale-ability of the CCX modules.

    • @Jooglesberry
      @Jooglesberry Před 7 lety +41

      Intel and AMD make a whole bunch of processors, and then they make the higher quality ones server chips, the lesser ones consumer chips. AMD's infinity fabric allows them to use lower core count dies together to make high core count processors and so they have way better yields. Intel makes high core count dies, but of course they are much more likely to have to throw away or disable parts of their chips because of the higher likelihood of defects on the larger dies.

    • @ajjoseph2990
      @ajjoseph2990 Před 7 lety +5

      But the technology used to create the perfect scalable environment for something that actually has 4 cpu dies isn't repurposed. What about that?

    So when Ryzen came out it was ok to test Ryzen at 3.9-4 Ghz and the 7700k at 5Ghz OC , but now we need to downclock ryzen by almost half just to make Intel look good , talk about hypocrisy...

    • @Grinch1
      @Grinch1 Před 7 lety +26

      @Momiji Ok , fair point , so if Intel can reach higher clocks , why didn't they downclock the intel cpu's in the Ryzen comparisons , but now they are downclocking them by 40%?
      From my POV When they needed Intel to be on top they OC and said that they can do it , now because Intel can't reach 4Ghz they downclock , no matter what Intel has to be on top. If they wanted true IPC test they would have never overclocked to 5Ghz while testing Ryzen. Simple as that.

    • @daylightriot5671
      @daylightriot5671 Před 7 lety +15

      @grinch I dont think a server needs clocks as high as 4ghz. From what i've seen online server pc's benefit from more cores. i think this is why epyc frightens them.
      also, intel has always cherry picked test reults and made unfair tests to promote their products. so does amd. look at the official amd ryzen games test of ashes of the singularity and compare it to videos of people running the exact same system.
      on another note, qualcomm is looking to join the desktop cpu family and is already working on a sever cpu. so soon we might have another company to root for.

    • @mstr-rptr
      @mstr-rptr Před 7 lety +2

      Server stuff never run at that high clocks. They need to keep TDP down since the small cases are stuffed full and coolers have to be slim. Also servers rarely use lowly 8 core models.

    • @Grinch1
      @Grinch1 Před 7 lety +1

      @daylinghtriot, sotajumalaa I don't own and never owned a server but I had a few vps's a while back for work purposes and trust me for that kind of task to have 1 core at 3Ghz instead of 1 core at 2ghz makes all the difference. So in virtualiziation where you need to run an os on each core or 2 cores , trust me the higher frequency is awesome. And besides he tdp of epyc is not that bad under load.
      And I agree with the cherry picking part , it's true but I guess that's just marketing. My only grief with this besides the "glued " together part is that they downclocked ryzen so much and people were buthurt when Amd downclocked a 7700k to 4Ghz to match the ryzen. I mean it's one thing a few hundred Mhz but another 40%?
      P.S. If you don't believe me try some free vps providers and see the difference between 1ghz and 1.5 on clock speed. Then imagine it at 3.5 or whatever epyc runs at.

    • @daylightriot5671
      @daylightriot5671 Před 7 lety +3

      @Grinch i think you misunderstood me. im not saying that cpu frequency is irrelevant. What im saying is that servers see more performance gains by having more cores.
      for example: a quad core clocked at 5ghz will not perform as well as a 16 core cpu at 3 or even 2ghz. that is why all modern server cpu's focus more on core count than single core performance. most server motherboards even come with two or more cpu slots so it can use more cores. From what i gather, heat used to be an issue with high clockspeeds for servers. Im not sure if thats still a thing though.
      Heres a link to validate what im saying: www.excitingip.com/1468/server-processor-basics-multiple-processors-multiple-cores-and-multiple-threads/
      on another note, i sort of get why both companies use downclocking in their tests as it shows which cpu performs better at that frequency. but id still agree that this test methodology is pretty fucked up as it doesnt really show real world performnce.
      From what i've seen of the cpu marketshare this quarter i'd say intel are justified in being worried about threadripper. Amd hasnt made massive gains yet but it is ryzen ;P

    It's just the same old shit with intel, the moment AMD becomes competetive they start playing dirty. A good product at a good value with a good attitude are 3 things intel never has & probably never will do at the same time.

    • @venettore3601
      @venettore3601 Před 7 lety

      +Mike Soda 6 cores are unnecessary if he's only planning on gaming. The 7600K performs as well or better than the R5 1600 in gaming and single-threaded tasks. Moreover, it can clock higher, further widening the gap in single-threaded performance. Like I said, unless he has specific multi-thread focused tasks (like content creation), it would be a waste of money to buy the R5 1600.

    • @MichaelSodapop
      @MichaelSodapop Před 7 lety +1

      +Steven Aque True but when I heard that Intel is basically giving the finger to their customers of Kaby Lake, makes one ponder about lifespan. i7-7700k's are experiencing extremely high random temp spikes & Intel's answer was to not overclock them. Which from my perspective is basically saying the chips are faulty & even though they're sold unlocked. The company doesn't care to support anything other than strictly stock. Unless you've got loads to throw around & the time to build a new system every few months. I'd rather go with a company that doesn't act that way.

    If you look a bit deeper into the xeon intel compared to the 1800x, it's ~$2200 USD. So it's fair to compare a $450 desktop cpu to a $2200 server cpu? Come on intel, at least TRY to make a good case.

    • @vanguardas9927
      @vanguardas9927 Před 7 lety +30

      Like linus said it's kinda okay to compare at 2.2ghz since it's basically a server die sold to the desktop. What Intel didn't show was power conmsumption, thermals, methodology and PRICE.

    • @JamsMinecraft
      @JamsMinecraft Před 7 lety +14

      Michael Low Plus desktop processor need much higher clocks to run well while server processors can run fine without a super high clock speed. So an underclock on a desktop processor will crush it's proformance while an underclock on a server processor will not make nearly as big of a difference.

    • @howardlam6181
      @howardlam6181 Před 7 lety

      It's fair. Price is based on consumer perspective not production cost. If it performs better, you should expect it to be more expensive. Regarding power consumption, I am sure intel's chip has an advantage especially when they are testing the thing at the same frequency.

      No need to sue Intel for two reasons. 1) Intel has suffered the damage, they're now basically in damage control mode aka desperation fools; And 2) suing only goes to show AMD wants the easy way out - why take that route when you can dethrone the competition and let them cry all over it? Witnessing intel's dirty practices only adds up to AMD's satisfaction. I bet AMD staff might be reading intel's bs statements and having some fun at their expense.

Memory transfers between local and remote memory have a massive impact on performance on Intel chips.

      Given the price hikes on the 4560, you might be better off just getting a 4620. I've seen at least two low budget tech channels cover this angle and compare, and with the price inflation it's a couple hundred extra mhz for just a little more, and they seem to be more in stock.

    I was a fan of AMD. They basically invented hybrid 32/64-bit. (The Intel who "knows" datacenter's Itanium pure 64-bit was a bit of a joke by comparison.) AMD basically invented frequency scaling. AMD was the first to go with fully integrated memory controllers. Went wild with high-speed component busses (HyperTransport). They basically invented true multi-core (where cores are lighter weight than that Pentium mentioned, which was multiple whole-CPU dies…) Only lately has Intel been in a realm of stability after having _caught up_ to AMD. Intel are seriously butthurt with all of the _lack_ of innovation on their side.

      The problem with the Itanium was that it was designed by committee after the lead designer had passed away which led to an overengineered architecture .. and then it did not have competitive x86 performance.

      GothAlice and emperorSbraz , the first ever chip to do Frequency Scaling was the VIA Cryix III/VIA C3 w LongHual (2000 - 2001) - but in Intel Vs AMD - AMD introduced scaling frequency first, a full two years before Intel (2003 Vs 2005) -Edit: i might be wrong about VIA if the AMD K6-2+ did have Frequency Scaling, which released a whole 2 years before VIA and 7 years before Intel (1998) - problem is tho cant find anything concrete that K6-2+ had frequency scaling, but it is in some lists for AMD's PowerNow! technology

Now,, with Epyc and Threadripper.. . HOLY SH!T!!!

      The following masterpiece is made by Elite Club:
      Linus and Edzel are sitting on the WAN show set, nervously preparing for the broadcast. They both sense their feelings, stirring up in each other as they hear each other softly breathing. "We're going to be late getting the WAN show up again" says Edzel. "What? Why?" Linus exclaimed, "What could be holding up our broadcast now?" he said nervously knowing that there wasn't anything technical going wrong, but emotionally, things were about to get right. "I've noticed you eyeing me like an ASUS Strix motherboard all day..." Edsel proclaimed. "It's all true" Linus admitted "I've loved you ever since you joined us at Linus Media Group, and I even dedicated a space in petabyte project where I've stored only videos with you in them." Edsel gasps, feeling anxious to finally reveal to his boss that he wishes to be his lover, "I always knew about it, I maintained the integrity of the database there and made sure it was hidden to the rest of the employees because I knew how happy it made you, and I only wish I could make you that happy myself" Linus thinks to himself about how WAN show is never on time, "Perhaps we can have a TechQuickie, then after WAN show we can Radeon Chill" Edzel excited by the prospect wraps his arms around Linus, and they share a loving kiss. "We don't have much time, and you get me hotter than Skylake-X" Linus said. He immediately dropped his trousers, revealing his thermal paste tube with a pea sized drop of precum oozing out. Edzel runs his hands all over Linus, eventually smearing the precum on Linus's stomach as if it were thermal paste on a heatspread. Soon Linus pulls down Edzel's pants, and bends over the WAN show desk. "We're already late, we can't waste much time." Linus knew the WAN show could wait, but his body could not. Edzel enters his thunderbolt port, just as Luke enters the room. Luke gasps in shock, feeling despair that he shall never know the love the Edzel now does. "Why must I always sit in the shadow" he bellows, linus interreupting says "I can have more than one sponsor Luke." Luke in his excitement immediately disrobes and says "Let's see how you handle a multi-threaded workload. For five minutes the three make love in various positions like the radiators in a Phanteks Enthoo Evolve case. Soon they begin to climax. "I'm about to thermal throttle" Edzel grunts, dumping his data along with Luke inside Linus's page file. Luke in post-coitus ecstasy pro-claims, "I haven't had such a good time since I benchmarked the GTX 1080 Ti" with which Linus responds "the real life workloads are way better than I imagined while running synthetic benchmarks."

      Also they've tried 'stitched' approach first:
      In a statement, Intel said, “We take all competitors seriously, and while AMD is trying to re-enter the server market segment, Intel continues to deliver 20-plus years of uninterrupted data center innovations while maintaining broad ecosystem investments. Our Xeon CPU architecture is proven and battle tested, delivering outstanding performance on a wide range of workloads and specifically designed to maximize data center performance, capabilities, reliability, and manageability. With our next-generation Xeon Scalable processors, we expect to continue offering the highest core and system performance versus AMD. AMD’s approach of stitching together 4 desktop die in a processor is expected to lead to inconsistent performance and other deployment complexities in the data center.”
      It didn't work. Now they are trying the 'glue' approach. The 7nm GloFlo node next year will complete their five stages of grief and loss cycle.

Maybe if they advertise it a little bit better we can see how much it can take the cpu market in pre built pc's and ect. Not seeing a i7 or i3 or i5, wanting to see a ryzen 7 ryzen 3 and a ryzen 5 on some random computer. And then on the other side we can see an Intel powered cpu. Then we can see true competition.

    If you think Intel is salty now, wait when Threadripper absolutely destroys X299. At least the Xeons have some competitive edge at some workloads and sadly Global Foundries will be completely unable to supply a serious market share for AMD. AMD taking 20% of the server market would already be huge simple because of production constraints. If AMD can maintain that for a couple of years they will not be departing again and will finally have some money to continue competing, also much better against Nvidia. That said, AMD really got Intel with there pants down, and now they start playing dirty, again. We can only hope that OEMs will keep selling AMD and won't be bribed or blackmailed again by Intel...

    You guys seriously think that the Swiss company Logitech, is superior to the German company Sennheiser in terms of sound?
    Logitech headsets fucking suck, just like Razer headsets, all they got going for them is their name.
    Sure both Logitech and Razer have their good side on other components, like Mouses, Keyboards and so on, but sure as fuck not in sound.
    Sennheiser is still the the Number 1 choice for headsets and headphones, and that's already the case for over a decade, this coming from someone that tries a huge variety of them just as a hobby (got a huge collection of different brands).

      @john-re6ui Před 7 lety

      Steven Borges Well actually a decent amount of Logitech's headsets are good, especially for thier cost, Razer has some good headsets but they do cost too much for what they offer. Of course Sennheiser is great in terms of sound, but their high-decent quality headphones are simply out of reach in terms of price for the average consumer, not adding onto the fact that most of them don't come with a microphone, or maybe a lot of them do, I have not exactly checked up on thier stock recently.

    AMD is doing great without ripping off consumers.
    They are giving us good value, quality hardware/thermal paste, giving the ability to overclock to everyone. They aren't restricting us caps on our pcie lanes or cores. While intel has done the opposite with, well with almost everything i can think of.
