  • On closer inspection of the Homokinetic slip joint I discover multiple cracks in the casing making it essential to replace. This is apparently a common failure point on the w109 6.3. I also touch upon a few other projects that are underway.

The slip joint on my 109 3.5 failed during the restoration. I initially took the car off the road for several years off the due a strange noise from the rear end. I cannot post a pic here but I will in the Facebook page that John runs. When it failed there was a audible bang and then nothing, no go, no drive..

I use a bluish grease for boattrailer
bearings it' very sticky but not affekt
lubrication in this axle and it disolvs
pretty easy when in use later on .

Thanks for the tip. I was thinking along those lines. A heavy grease of some type that would dissipate when its all put back together.
      Cheers John.

It's easy to pull the joint out. look down inside and there's an allen head screw , undo it and the joint comes out.
what Damages the homo joint is having the engine idle too high and doing burnouts in reverse and around left hand turns. I have seen them destroyed just by having the idle up to high and putting the car into reverse. Same goes for cold running when the idle is stepped up.

Wheel bearing grease or Transmission assembly lube will hold the bearings in place during assembly... I had similar bearings that needed to be held on place while assembling a 4wheel drive transfer case once. I used transmission assembly lube. It's sticky.. works perfectly.

    Hi John, as expected....
Check the re-man part from MB carefully, several years it was not available due to the complex production process. You may also consider to use a good used original part vs. the re-man (which I did). Almost all MB's from that time have it. 108,111,113 etc. Rgds, Oliver

I was thinking along the same lines. I have a w108 280 here that I'm using for parts. I was thinking I could have the one out of that. It's probably good because its just a 6 cylinder car. I just have to move it to its final resting place as the wife doesn't appreciate what I'm calling yard art:) Then I can remove the axle. So you think that an older original is a better way to go? Rather than a reman one? Thanks Oliver.
      Cheers John.

@@mercedesmaintenance.6339 I would expect this can be an alternative. I often found better spare parts in lower horsepower categories.....the quality of the re-man parts has to be examined more and more. The parts have not always been done by the original suppliers. Regrettably something one has to keep in mind more and more....

The club mentioned by Oliver is the "Verein der Heckflossenfreunde" (vdh, organisation of tailfin (i.e., W110, W111, and W112) friends). Despite its name it is oriented at all friends and fans of old Mercedes cars; a great institution i.m.o.
