In this week’s episode, we discuss a hard Lightroom skill that pays off forever! There's a ton of photo editing tips, techniques, and best practices out there, but none of them have had as great of an impact on my editing workflow as this Lightroom skill has. Now this isn't the easiest skill to learn as it typically just takes experience, editing hundreds of photos throughout the years to develop this, but in this video I hope to greatly reduce that learning curve for you. I really hope you enjoy this week's video and feel comfortable trying this technique out the next time you begin editing some of your favorite photos. As always thanks so much for watching! - Mark D.

One thing I noticed right away when you toggled between the Raw image and the completed image were the berries. In the Raw photo, you really can't see them but when you warmed up the middle, that red shows up much easier and helps to add to the scene.

I've been a 'student' of yours for a couple of years and always appreciate the clarity of the content. This video has been especially helpful - the 'optical journey' is the sum of a photographers intent, and the 'how to achieve it' is a bonus.

Another top notch lesson here on using light to enhance the view. Some people don’t understand digital photography and raw files so let their nay says roll off your back. There are times when processing a scene I begin to question myself for using multiple brushes, radials and grads and today’s video confirms that some times that’s what is necessary to complete the look. Thanks 😊

Wild seeing these techniques parallel almost identically to analog darkroom dodging and burning in the print process. Never used Lightroom (darktable bc free) but it’s always cool to see how the techniques from decades ago have been transferred digitally.

I'm a Lightroom newbie. I picked it up to do color correction, but this idea of the 'optical journey' is a wonderful new way of thinking about the tool. I know it's a rich environment that no doubt takes years to master. Your presentation is very clear; doesn't talk down to the beginner, and MOST importantly, gives a photographic reason to use a given set of tools.

That what I can’t seem to wrap my head around? I always thought that the point of taking a photo especially in landscape photography is to capture nature how it looks unedited? That’s the beauty of the photo is excepting what nature has to offer at the time of the shot. If you start adding this and getting rid of that, well that’s not what was really there when you took the shot?

The whole concept behind this demo is that of Visual Weight. Understanding the push/pull effect of visual weight in our images allows photographers to direct the visual hierarchy and visual flow of an image. Visual Hierarchy is the order in which we arrange features in a scene, from front to back, in our minds eye. Features at the front of the VH being more important than those in the back (also figure/ground). This isn’t literally what’s closer or further from the front of the scene, it’s about what stands out and what fades back intellectually, what we give our attention to. Photographers use composition, saturation, hue, masks, dodging/burning etc to move diff parts of an image into different levels of the visual hierarchy. Once you can arrange a visual hierarchy you can begin to direct a Visual Flow, using the hierarchy and composition to direct the viewers eye in a more intentional way. This doesn’t just apply to post precessing either, it’s part of how we compose in the first place. I wish more photographers, novice and pro alike, gave themselves more of a grounding in these basic visual communication concepts, I think it would make a world of difference for a lot of people new to processing and to pros who know how to do these things, but struggle with defining them, or describing how they work in the first place.

This video is one of your best! You are well spoken, the agenda flows nicely, and I can see real progress as you move from one step to the next.

  • @kbqvist

I find it interesting how different advice is helpful to different people. Clearly, reflections of what you want the viewer’s eye to do has been helpful for you, and your end result is beautiful. For me it was almost the opposite: stopping to worry about the viewer’s eye was very helpful.
The thing is that ‘the viewer’s eye’, as a concept, is way to abstract for me.
When I stopped worrying about how ‘the viewer’s eye’ might travel around an image, it allowed me to focus on my own experience of the image, and how that changed while editing. To me developing the ability to sense how the image works inside me was much more helpful than trying to mentally guess how a hypothetical viewer’s eye would move around the image, and it made my editing much more effective.
Ironically, it seems that when one of my images work well for me, it tends to work also for others. But my point is that it is more effective for me to focus on my own experience than trying to second guess what a hypothetical viewer’s eye might do.
