    • @kaki-8888
      @kaki-8888 Před rokem +31

      @@bohemianprince7944 Here's the breakdown:
Ben got $80 (change out of 100 for $20 USB) + 50 (he gave 40 and got 50 and he profited 10) = At this point, he has $120 of his own money +$10 profit = $130.
Note: It is important to note that he gave away his original $100 bill in exchange for the USB and received an $80 change. This is different from the $40 he gave away. The $40 turned into $50 ($10 profit) is not from the $80 change. Meaning he got $130 money during the scam.
Then the 5 twenties for the whole $100 bill. He got his original $100 back, but technically nothing happened. Ben still got $130.
@1:44 it starts to become tricky/complex/complicated but here's the breakdown of Ben's $130:
      1) Alan took away Ben's $100 in exchange for $150 = Ben's total money is now $180.
      2) Alan took Ben's $20 in exchange for $10 = Ben's total money is now $170.
      3) Alan gave Ben $100 but took away his $50 in exchange for $20 = Ben's total money is now $240.
      4) Alan took Ben's $100 in exchange for $50 = Ben's total money is now $190.
      5) Alan immediately exchanged $50 for $10 = Ben's total money is now $150.
      6) Alan exchanged 2 twenties meaning $40 for $10 = Ben's total money is now $120.
      7) Alan took another $20 and exchanged it for $10 = Ben's total money is now $110
      8)Lastly, Alan took $10 back = @2:14 Ben's total money is now $100
Summary/ TL;DR: Disregarding the $20 USB, During the scam, Ben had $130 ($120 money of his own but profited $10) but after his change raise scam, he only got $100 back. This means Alan pocketed $20 through an exchange scam while taking back the $10 that Ben initially stole through a $40 to $50 exchange. Alan is an absolute Mad Lad!

The real scam - 20$ for a USB Drive

  • @timawaviking526
    @timawaviking526 Před 2 lety +1448

    Ben starts out with 100.
The USB costs 20, resulting in 80 he gets in one 50 and three 10s.
He tries switching four 10s into one 50, resulting in 90 total.
He then hands over five 20s for one 100. The result is unchanged.
Ben then wants to give the 100 first in exchange for twenty 10s, which Alan don't have that many 10s for, so instead tries with five 50s. The result is unchanged, still 90.
After that Alan takes control and takes Ben's 100 for three 50s. Ending with 150 for Ben for this calculation.
He then takes Ben's 20 and gives him a 10. Resulting in 140 for Ben.
He then gives Ben the 100 and takes the 50 for a 20. Resulting in 210 for Ben.
He then takes Ben's 100 again, to give him a 50, he takes back immediately to give him a 10. Resulting in 120 for Ben.
He then takes his two 20s for a 10. Resulting in 90 for Ben.
He then hands over a 10 for a 20. Resulting in 80 for Ben.
And finishes with taking one 10 back. Resulting in 70 for Ben.
Math seems to check out. I was unsure if they reset it all when Alan took control, but if the math is to go with it all they must have.

That avoids the whole "I gave you a 20/100/etc" excuse when they gave you a 10 or something. Also if they want to further make transactions the first one has to be completed and put in the register.

Then took his 100 back for 150 which would’ve been 260 but he immediately swaps that for a 10 so now Ben’s got 120 instead. Back when I was a teenager and visiting Canada for the first time, I bought some snacks and thought I had accidentally scammed them on the change because I gave them an American twenty and got back a little more than twenty Canadian (and the snacks). Later when I looked at the exchange rate and actually did the math, I realized that I was the one that got scammed.
They applied the exchange rate after the purchase instead of before.
    $20 -$3= $17 $17 + 25%=$21.25
    $20 +25%= $25 $25-$3= $22
These aren't the exact figures as it was in the early 80's and my memory isn't perfect, but I remember that the exchange rate was really high at that time (maybe 28%) and I had lost a little over a dollar. Luckily it was a small price to pay to learn not to be a stupid tourist and exchange my money at a bank.

I've been watching VLDL for so long that "Ah! Hello adventurer" is starting to feel like a hearty welcome home. I'm not just being hyperbolic, but... well, I guess I am. It's only been like 6 years, and I've never been to New Zealand, let alone met any of you.. But honestly, these days when I see a VLDL video pop up, I genuinely sigh with relief. It's so refreshing to know that all I have to deal with over the next 3-36min is Rowan being a model and/or threatening pay cuts. Or Bodger giving someone the middle finger as a gift. Or Johnny picking fights. Or Arthur quick-drawing everyone within a 3-mile radius while trying to administer first aid. Or an invader who was forged in the fires of the roly poly. Where do you find all these people?! Seriously, though, I appreciate all of you and your hard work. Rowan tends to take center stage, but Alan, Adam, Ben, Ellie, Britt, Hamish, Byron, John Callen have all delivered lines that gave me pause or made me laugh uncontrollably. In a perfect world, I'd get to fish with Baelin, help Greg find his wayward sheep, take a "smoke break" with Ellie, and save Adam's family (oops, wrong franchise) from the most accommodatingly slow fire in history. Then maybe Ben, Sunbro and I could go fight a boss together. Hamish and Adam can come, too, but they really gotta limit the holy novas. Britt, I'm still not over "I will never forget you..." And speaking of not forgetting things... wasn't it someone's birthday? Shame, I can't remember who. I'm immensely grateful for the years of humor, nerdiness, and often genuinely dramatic performances.

He originally gave 100, the price was 20, so he should’ve gotten 80 in change. But by the end of it, he holds 20 in change. In other words, Ben got counter-scammed into paying 80 in stead of 20.
