- In near darkness 5690 Leander climbs the Lickey Incline unassisted, the video starts at a stop at Stoke Works Junction and finishes at Barnt Green, including the full climb from Bromsgrove to Blackwell summit, the train was a Vintage Trains tour returning from Cardiff to Tyseley.
Transferred from an old VHS which was originally recorded from an average tape camcorder so quality is nothing like todays standards.
A great capture of this probably never to be repeated spectacle..... The Driver Ray Poole & I were actually chatting today about this trip and he's still very active with WCRC on main line steam. Many of us ex BR men have great memories of our experiences in the 60's but Ray is one of us who has kept the reality going and thus many more 'adventures' to recall!! Cheers, Brian.
That was awesome. Not only the climb, but also the way they got her back up to line speed again as soon as they were over the top. No shortage of steam there. An amazing performance by the Driver, locomotive and especially the fireman.,
What a great crew on this most drivers would never tempted let alone won it!! Great video thanks for sharing :)
A Stannier design. Not a problem when you think about what they tackled day in day out. . . . Top video.
Never mind the quality, that was tense.....one slip would have been a disaster.......and hooting her distain at the gradient as she went over the top.....excellent.
I was on this trip. I seem to recall we were due to have one of the Tyseley GWR locos attach at Bromsgrove to act as a banker, but we ran through without stopping. (It turned out later some paperwork hadn't been signed or something, and the loco wasn't allowed out on the main line). There were a lot of white knuckles on the train, wondering if Leander could make the climb unassisted, but as this video proves, she handled it without a problem. Thanks for bringing back memories!
How many coaches? Makes all the difference between scampering up the hill and stalling ha;lfway up.
There were 6 on. My dad was on the train.
I enjoyed it.Quality not a problem. Thanks for posting!
Was this the only time a train climbed The Lickey without assistance?
Yep that's pretty much correct Optimist on the run, 4965 Rood Ashton Hall was originally going to bank the train, The strange thing with that is 4965 dragged the train from Tyseley to Washwood Heath with Leander on the back earlier that morning, so it had already been out onto the mainline that day, yet was unavailable for when needed later, Not that I'm complaining with how events transpired of course
Only footage of this I can find. I hope this happens again at some point, I’d love to do it.
Very nice, i was there line side somewhere, must dig the video out!
I think I can, I think I can, I know I can! Story from my childhood. Born Birmingham 1951... holidays at Weston super Mare and Breen! We're on our way home!
Fascinating. Was it a six or seven car train? There was at least one person not in hi-vis clothing right by the track near the top, so I'm assuming trespass. Idiot. Also, it staggers me how many people think their flash will do anything to illuminate the train from a field!
Amazing. Who was the driver and fireman? What was their home MPD?
