  • Watch as Walker Bros Ag efficiently harvests 1,500 acres of corn silage at Stone Ridge Dairy in Central Illinois in just 6 days in August 2023. See the massive John Deere 9900i Self-Propelled Forage Harvesters in action with their 956 hp, 24L Liebherr V12 engine. The crews use two of these impressive harvesters along with several hauling trucks to chop, and transport the silage back to the dairy farm where it in a pile to be used in about a year to feed the dairy herd. This is an impressive display of high-capacity modern agricultural harvesting.

    Love the drone footage. Would love to see you open up those long rows. This is so different than when I loaded under a New Holland 1880! My husband packed silage for 53 years. Good job.

      Walker Bros Ag does an awesome job and as a bonus they don't run over the old fat guy with the drone. :-)

      I was wondering the same thing when flying the drone and all I could come up with is that it was pretty hot that day so maybe added cooling. Then again maybe someone forgot to close it :-)

    Was this a dairy farm or a custom operation for other farmers?

      Illinois spent most of the growing season in drought so it did better than I thought it would.

    Hi Jim, maybe you can answer a question. I see all these silage videos where they are using multiple tractors to compact the silage. Why doesn’t a farmer use a sheepsfoot roller? It’s would do a better job compacting, and a used one can be purchased under 40k and last a lifetime.

    • @JimBaltz
      @JimBaltz  Před 10 měsíci +1

      My guess is because they can use the tractors for other farm activities while a sheepsfoot roller would be for only one purpose. Also it might be a little hard on the concrete ;-)

      I know of one farmer that does. Its a lot of money for a unit that only does one thing and they can't push silage.

      Narration is way better than music. We arm chair farmers want to know about the process of planting, growing and harvesting. @@JimBaltz
