Tommie hails from Brownsville, Texas and had a career in television broadcast marketing as well as the music industry prior to making the switch to becoming a barber. Work took him far from his home in San Antonio, Texas, to Berlin, Germany, and Scandinavia.
However, with the proliferation of digital music downloads, Tommie became increasingly disillusioned with the industry.
"I didn't find any value in it anymore," Tommie explained.
A haircut, however, is something that can never be downloaded, streamed, or delivered to your door! This was a reassuring awakening for Tommie.
Depressed and no longer happy with the direction of his place in the music industry, it was a chance meeting within a simple three-chaired barbershop in Oslo, Norway, that proved to be a pivotal turning point!
The shop was owned by an older barber who had been cutting hair for over 40 years in the same location just off a small breezeway near a performance hall called the Folketeateret. The inside of the shop was a collection of seemingly random items that had taken over the space, and in between the magazine piles and boxes were three barber chairs.
Waiting by his chair was a barber who was happy to receive the next customer and share a moment or story. A low-resolution picture framed of the barber with his old Corvette proudly hung from the barber's mirror!
"He just made me feel like I was the most important person in the world," added Tommie, "He made me feel like I was welcome there.” And this was at a time when Tommie was down and heartbroken, and he says, “nothing made me feel good.” He remembers this barber just put him in the best mood he had been in a very long time ❤️
✨ So in 2016, Tommie enrolled in barber school and began his barbering journey.
Now Tommie owns two Puro Handsome barbershops in downtown San Antonio 💈 He is quick to share his San Antonio roots and desire to promote local culture. Inside, the shop is a small art gallery of local artists, products are locally sourced, and you can ask the barbers anything about the San Antonio area!
Tommie explained the loose translation of "puro" as "100%, through and through, genuine, any synonym you can imagine of those adjectives.”
If you ask locals the meaning of puro, you will get a lot of different interesting beautiful answers, "and none of them are wrong!" Tommie adds. He thinks, "It's a very unique and special word for this community."
Much like his vision for Puro Handsome, an immersive experience and uniquely San Antonian!

Greetings all Haircut Harry fans!! Thanks for watching the Puro Handsome shave video. I’ll try to answer any questions y’all may have but here’s some answers to some common questions.
1. Downtown San Antonio has a large homeless mission nearby. I am a volunteer there sometimes and the amount of people we help is staggering at times.
2. Shave soap doesn’t always work well here. The combination of rich oily foods and complexions mixed with high humidity often makes the detergents in shave soap “sticky”. We use it for neck shaves because it is a nice touch.
3. We are developing our own shave gel because of this. It comes out warm of the dispenser too. It offers plenty of glide and protection between face and blade.
4. As an instructor I also wanted the clear gel show how the grain of a beard can sometimes make a routine shave more complicated.
I’m still in disbelief that I even got to do this with Harry! Had a great time hanging out! Thanks for watching! Cheers!!

I never coment and ive been supporting for years now, this barber showed a huge amount of profesionalism and hygienic mainetenance from washing his hands to keeping everything super clean! Loved the shave !

We pride ourselves in serving downtowners as well as tourists. We want to provide as thorough a connection as possible to get you feeling fresh and then have you on your way to conquer the rest of your day. As much as we’d like to be a spa we are very much still a downtown proper barbershop.
I’m disappointed that the barber didn’t use the hot lather machine. Other than that, good video. Interesting that some barbers don’t use lather.
Thanks for watching. The heavy detergent in shave soap lather from these machines in humid environments will oftentimes leave the skin “sticky” depending on their complexion. Also, in Texas it’s not legal nor hygienic to use shave brushes. Im also developing my own shave gel because of these considerations in San Antonio. This was a great test. Notice that Harry had no irritation nor redness. Cheers!

Downtown especially. There are homeless missions nearby as well as a bus station just blocks away. This video kinda magnifies it but it’s not a tent city.
