  • Hey there. This video is to give a brief synopsis on how and why my husband and I decided to keep our family mortgage free. I want to share a message of hope and encouragement for those of you who may be struggling or want to live against the grain of our modern American ways.

I’m coming from a family who has been very fortunate. I never had to think about anything and that just made me so extremely unaware of how to be independent and responsible. I wished my parents would have taught me that but I had to learn that by myself at the age of 30.
I envy you for being such an independent and intelligent woman! Much respect from me ❤

Hi, Ann. I was thrilled to read your comment here. You were born in 1920? So, you are 103 years old? You are amazing to me. My Mom was born in 1921 and I miss her dearly. I wish she was still here with me. Like you, she grew up during the Depression, as did my Dad, who was born in 1918. They were frugal, knew how to make every penny count, did not waste things and we lived a good life. Evenrually, my parents bought a nice enough house in Brooklyn NY. My parents worked hard and kept family close...Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins. We had parties in the yard and everyone brought a dish. It was fun. Eventually, we went on annual vacations because my Dad saved for it, just like saving to pay bills. I loved our road trips. My parents did all repairs and updates themselves. My Dad, often,, worked 2 jobs and he could fix anything around the house. My Mom hung wallpaper, painted, could sew & mend clothes/curtains, cooked homemade meals daily, worked part-time jobs, raised 10 kids, took care of 2 Grandmas and helped anyone in need. Other family & friends stopped by often to visit. There was always music in our home. Sundays were wonderful family days. It's been a wonderful life. I'll bet you can relate to all that in your own life experience. I was so happy to see your comment here. I'm grateful for the stroll down memory lane. I'm glad you have a lovely nurse to help you. And I wish you all the best in this new year coming. Happy New Year, Ann...from Georgianna. 💕

You should do a you tube talking about your hard and good times or your life, the changes you seen, and share your life story. It would be a legacy to so many. Like a living book. Like Clara from the great depression, her grandson made the film. She has since passed but I still watch her channel. I wish I would have done it with my grandmother, I still miss her dearly and she taught me so much especially when I was young. God Bless you and I would think about you tubing your life story.

It took a long time for me to realize that the American Dream: large house, swimming pool, new , expensive cars is actually the American Nightmare.
I moved out of an expensive state with high cost of living to a low cost state, bought a small house for cash , and am now debt free. I am actually now considered low income but it doesn't seem like it. My quality of live has improved 100% and maintaining a simple lifestyle has been a blessing.

A lot of people out there aren't good, and will figure out ways to dampen your sunshine if you get my meaning? Wolves in sheep's clothing. Not saying the commenter is, but what I am saying has to do with others paying attention to certain details. There are folks in this world that don't want folks like us, figuring out how to beat them at their own games, of cheating us at every turn, and trying to control every little aspect of our lives. We are a 6 figure income couple and had very little saved and not much cash lying around the preverbal". '...don't have $500 for an emergency" that was us. The big thing was debt all kinds of it, cars mortgage (although our home isn't a high price one), student loans for our kids, and of course credit cards.
One day we just got sick of being broke and went total scorched earth and became frugal overnight. Paid it all off, it took almost 5 years but now we have no debt and this year our savings rate is 50% on basically the same income that had us perpetually broke.
So for us it is mainly staying out of debt and watching our spending, at first it was a real effort to save in our HISA and 401Ks but now it's actually fun watching our money grow. No car or vacation or neighborhood is worth being broke or financially unstable.

We have now lived in this home for about 35 years, raised our children, still have young grandchildren and still enjoying our little piece of heaven. My husband and I are both retired now, so we’ve spent the last year updating and caring for our home and property to make sure things last us through the rest of our lifetime. This is so freakin inspiring. I am working 60-70 hours a week as a care giver in the mental health field, plus walmart and food service jobs. I never missed a beat of work as i was always an essential employee. But living paycheck to paycheck with no family to lean on, i made the stupid mistake of getting into car and student loan debt. I am hustling to get out of it. Im learning how to cook for myself, how to run a frugal little home. I have everything i need and i got myself on my feet. I am blessed to have cheap rent. But if i got evicted tomorrow i wouldn't be able to pay rent in the area on my base pay. I feel like i am working my life away. I finally got a month ahead and i payed annually for some of my bills. The relief of knowing i have minimal phone service and electricity for a year is amazing. im starting to dream about building a cottage in the woods and living a life free of excess bills. I want to only pay for the services i use this month, not mistakes i made years ago.

I immediately subscribed because you are living a life I wish I'd done earlier. We're debt free now, but it took a long time. I hope you'll share things you've done to the house and plans you have for the future. I'm trying to cook more from scratch. I'm not as frugal as I could be, but I'm much more frugal than I was. I appreciate the time you took to reach out with this video. I pray you are blessed by those you'll touch. Take care, Linda 🦋

This is brilliant advice and encouragement, unfortunately most people live in a world of chasing instant gratification, be it the newest iphone or the flashiest car. My husband and I live debt free (although as one of the commentors noted it is a good idea to have a credit card and pay it off in total each month, just to have a credit score) You are very inspiring.

Wow! I greatly admire your story!! Good for you. I'm a huge Dave Ramsey fan. We have not followed his plan to the level we should have but we did get out of debt years ago except for our house. Your story is so inspirational. I'm sure you've probably heard of this lady, but years back I used to read a newsletter called The Tightwad Gazette by Amy Daczyn. She later put all the newsletters together into a book. She and her husband have such an inspirational story also that I think you would love. I am 60 years old now and I wish I would have made some of the decisions you are making now. You are setting your family up for a great life!

Found Dave Ramsey about 10 years ago. Only had my husband's income so we Made sure we only had a mortgage, paid off and drove only older used cars, and refused to get a loan for any car. Went to a 15 yr loan when rates dropped low and kept paying the original amount before the refinancing and have always tried to make an extra payment once a year. We haven't followed his plan to the T either, but we have taken his major focuses and that's what we are zeroe'd in on. We are upper 40/mid 50 years old, raising 7 children.... We are TWO months from paying off our mortgage. I can't wait to scream... WE'RE DEBT FREE!!!!!

I kept the newsletters because the doesn’t have everything from the letters. Every year I like to re-read the 6yrs of newsletters. Many of Dave’s ideas are in her newsletters, written 7 years earlier.

We were already frugal and we're implementing most of the things Ramsey mentions before I ever listened to any of his stuff. Hard times, and out of necessity was my teacher as well as my single mom growing up and implementing some of the things she did.

Repairing a neglected home takes a lot of work. Kudos to you guys for seeing the potential in doing so. We made the decision to purchase a small waterfront property that needed significant work. (deck rotted through, garage roof caving in and a carpenter ant infestation). We took on a small mortgage to purchase it, and slowly started working on projects. That 1st month we learned about pest treatments and we fixed the garage roof. Fixed the deck the next spring. I put any extra money towards paying it off quickly. Spent an entire summer repairing a huge collapsing retaining wall little by little. Slowly we added a new project every few months as money allowed. 6 yrs later it was paid off and a comfortable, but not fancy place for us to escape the chaos of city life. We'll be making our fulltime home in a few years and I can't wait to be able to slow down and enjoy what life has to offer. You guys are wise beyond your years. I sure wish we would've seen that light long before we did.

New subscriber here. You remind me a lot of me when I was your age. I married at 19 also and was married to my husband for going on 41 years when he passed from brain cancer October of last year. I wish I was completely debt-free but still have a small mortgage balance on our home other than that just the regular month to month bills such as utilities auto insurance Etc if we had not lived frugally and mostly debt-free I would not be able to survive. While I was caring for my sick husband his income was all we had. Once he passed that stopped and now I have to think about how to care for myself so I am not a burden to my two grown children. I will be ok because of living simple for many years. You have a smart head on your shoulders, you remind me of my daughter and yes.. as you said in another video if your children seeing you "doing" it is really how they'll learn.😊

New here from Germany, so very sorry for your loss and pain. I have thought of a situation like yours with my husband too and we recently got me (57) another part-time housekeeping work starting next month to at first pay our bills on a budget but just in case that I might be able to feed myself when I'm alone. We're both waiting for Jesus Christ to snatch us though (1 Thessalonians 4:17) but you never know what comes first. Another option for me might be to sell the house which is then too much space indeed. Much love and blessings your way! 🙏❤️

What's interesting is you're most likely living very nearly identical to the people who built that house. You're an anomaly today, but living normally for that era. It's interesting to take a step back and try to look at our inflated lifestyle we think we deserve. To be fair, it is harder to live in simplicity when nothing around us is simple, but I really think it's more attainable than what we want to realize. With the cash flow opportunities we currently have, if we were to be patient and live frugally with purpose, we could really get somewhere.
