I think you missed one very very important rule about fighting over a ridge line. Don't move straight up when picking over a ridge line because it makes it a lot easier to hit the cuppola (which will often be the first thing that will be visible). Move diagonaly so that your opponent needs to adjust his/her aim or wait that you stop moving.

One very easy way to check if your hull is hidden (if you are new player), just simply go into your sniper view. If you see the ridge line in your sniper view you know that you are as hull down as possible
