In the previous episode we discussed the development of America's current main battle tank, the M1 Abrams. Though many tout that tank as the best in the world its European counterparts often offer stiff competition. One particular rival has been vying to knock the American contender out of the scene even before the US accepted the Abrams for service. That tank is the German manufactured Leopard 2. In this video we will cross the Atlantic in order to learn the story behind this feline and discover why to many it is considered to be the best modern tank in the world.

While I agree the Leopard does outmatch the Abrams in many regards, there is a slight difficulty in trying to compare the two MBT's, the reason for this difficulty is due to the nature of necessity, at the time that the Abrams was being developed, there was a very noticeable need for armor and crew protection due to the M60 being a very outdated tank. I personally feel that in order to give the tanks a proper comparison, you would need to find why they set the certain requirements for the tank. If I remember correctly, you listed the full list of criteria's in the previous video, but these are the ones that I noticed stuck out.
At least from what I have gathered, the US wanted 3 things that heavily weighed the outcome-
Crew Protection, because it doesn't matter how good the tank is if the crew can't stay alive.
Cost, in order to roll out 'X' number of tanks needed, they needed to meet a certain price criteria otherwise, it also makes it easier to promote the manufacturing of the equipment as it provides additional in-state jobs, thus gaining more support of the people, senate, press, ect.
And lastly, a noticeable upgrade in overall protection against weapons such as depleted uranium shells, tungsten-core shells, RPG-7's, IEDs and landmines; all while still having enough mobility to react to given situations of war.
I do agree that the first shot will likely determine the battle, but that was probably one of the reasons there was a focus for armoring the Abrams up so much, this way even a lesser skilled crew could survive a direct hit and react to contact accordingly. Obviously this is all personal opinion based on what I've read and learned so take it all with a grain of salt.
Shut it libby
/s
They forget tanks are not what win wars, and a F-15 or 18 can turn a tank into a pile of scrap so the Leo kinda sucks in that regard, you have to remember in war America can play both speed and Attrition
Also, many Leopard 2 fans overlook that the Leopard 2 still retains the same issue with ammunition storage being at the front of the vehicle. A lucky shot in the front or at the left side can easily send the entire tank erupting in a massive explosion, which is far more likely to kill the crew than something like a fuel tank fire.
The M1âs fire issue is an easier system to overcome, since, even if one starts, itâs relatively easy to get out of the tank and, most important of all, the ammunition can be ejected to prevent total loss of the vehicle and its crew.
@@bambihall169 Tanks do win Wars, that's something everyone forgets, yes a plane or a helicopter can just destroy a tank but everything has counters.
"Oh, they forget that their planes can just get shot down by our SAMs", "Their SAMs can be destroyed by our infantry", "Their infantry can be destroyed by our tanks". It all goes back on its self, so no, while tanks technically do not win wars, they don't exactly not win wars either. It's a collective effort.
@@bambihall169 infantry actually wins wars. And you might wanna consider one thing: for planes to even do anything CAS-related you need complete air superiority, unless you like getting hit by a SAM.
Infantry with an ATGM or even a disposable rocket launcher are a bigger threat at the moment.

Even if it's not the best, It IS the sexiest.
You kinda forgot the ammo rack behind the frontal armor that is a massive weak spot.
I was just saying something about that, lol. If you compare Abrams getting hit to Leopard getting hit. The Leopard has some nasty secondary explosions while the Abrams is like "lol wut" as the fuel burns off worst case. They really need to delete that or have a good blowout system. Store the ammo angled vertical and have it blow forward or something as a sealed cold storage travel rack.
that was actually "fixed" on the newest versions ... the DM63 ammunition just doesnt explode when hit
I love that intro, the narration makes me feel watching a LOTR with tanks
I got a Warpath ad before this video and it just hyped me up all the way until I realized the video hadn't even started
Thank you for the premiere. Glad to watch this. There is truly no best tank as you have to ask who, what, where, when, why as each country has requirements that are different due to needs, doctrine, and even culture, etc. It's the guys inside the tank that make it great generally and even still, it's never tank A vs tank B. It's tank A with arty, infantry, air support, tanks, etc. vs tank B with the same. Thanks Cone, can't wait for part 2.
When are you going to do part 2 of this video? Do you have a production schedule? Are you going to cover successors both NATO, Warsaw Pact & others?
Tanks for posting!!! Great video!!!
One of these on the challenger 2 would be pretty cool
ok but get warthunder sponsor next time the ingame footage is heaps better
I actually liked the flash and smoke/dust of this footage though. But war thunder has indeed better models.
The grind of WT leaves alot to be desired though.
Besides, AW has been chugging along on a smaller dev team than the other bigger tank games.
The thing that always jars me when I see Armored Warfare footage is that the tanks still look pristine even after taking a penetrating hit. It's only when they're actually destroyed that any damage at all is visible.
Armored warfarr has better details such as lights on tanks (front lights and back lights turnijg on when reversing) and after the shot ypu can see thick smoke coming out from the fume extractor.
God damn the t 64 was so a head of its time.
@Pommy Pie Fact of the matter is that the t 64 was literally being produced before the first leopard 1 was made. A decade later they had the t80 and other upgrades of the t72 which were also ahead of there time.
@Pommy Pie Never said the 80s. t72s and t80s were all made in the 70s, thats why I said a decade later not two... If the soviet union had the funds they probably would have continued makes amazing tanks. That being said I would still rather be in a t72 or t80 over a m60a3.
Bob Semple was ahead of its time
@Pommy Pie T-64 was introduced at around 1963-'64, a decade later it would've seen Chieftain Mk5's, Leopard 1A2's and M60A2's.
It's still by far the most capable, especially given that the T-64B was right around the corner and it'd already been upgraded to the T-64A standard in 1968.
Unfortunately for the T64, it is no longer itâs time.
I just love how the Kpf/Kpz/Mbt 70 looks
Very good video, amazing as always. I do wish to bring up the parts shortage and maintenance problems this tank does have for the countries that use it however.
The problem when people compare the m1a2 and the a7 is that when they type the m1a2 into google they forget to add the âsepv4â as thatâs the full name. They are pretty much comparing a modern tank to a a tank that is more than 10 years old
Boo hoo Abrams isnât called the best so ima go keyboard warrior. Absolutely no one cares, if your country has a tank that can fulfill its duties I count it as good. Not everything is a sick measuring contest. Whatâs your point also.

Exactly. Plus the logistics. Poland is planning to buy Abrams tanks now, even though it has Leopard 2's. This makes no sense to me: it's much more effective to buy more of what perhaps is a SLIGHTLY less effective tank, but which you know how to use and have the logistics and training systems for already in place, than to buy something SLIGHTLY more effective which you can't afford to operate anyway.

Not sure I'd agree any tank is the best since different tanks fit better warfare doctrines better. For example, the Abrams is probably the best tank for what America uses it's tanks for but arguably others could beat it out in certain raw statistics, and the Leopard 2 is in a similar situation.

Am I right in thinking the Leopard 2 doesn't have the awful fuel efficiency of the Abrams either?
When's part 2 dropping?
that'd be correct, plus it has the benefit of running on diesel instead of jet fuel which simplifies supply lines.
â@@jonahdewitt8464 I'm not trying to fanboy for the Abrams, but its turbine is less picky about fuel than most internal combustion engines. Every source I have seen says that it can run on diesel, and many other hydrocarbons, in addition to the jet fuel.
@@jonahdewitt8464 Abram's turbine can use multiple fuel types, not only jet fuel. Merica knows the quirk of the turbine but accepted it because of its performance and versatile acceptance of fuel, even if it is quite thirsty, America can be spendy with it's supplies
â@jonahdewitt8464 the US miltary has standardized on one fuel type for all ground vehicles starting in the early 90s to simplify supply lines. It's JP8 which is a NATO standard fuel. As others have pointed out the turbine can run on diesel or other fuels if necessary. One of the main things that makes the US military so capable is its logistics capability, hence bases all over the world.

It probably doesn't have much actually to do with how 'good' they are; rather how available they are. Im sure germany exports them for a much better price than most of the competition. Parts availability is also likely much better due to the location of Germany.

A tank is only as good as its surrounding groups, thats why there were destroyed Leo 2 in turkey and Abrams in Irak
Yes. But the most important factor is the deployment zone and tactics. Look at the Canadian and Turkish use of Leo's. Turks used their Leo's while there were no infantry support. So they lost 5-8 Leo 2s. While Canadians used their Leo's with care and made their enemies shit on their pants.
That is one amazing intro
Can you help me identify the song starting at 6:30? I swear I've heard it but I cannot find it in my music. I want to make sure it's get added to my stuff.
In the 1980âs, the Leopard 2A4 edged off as the âbest tankâ due to some minor differences between it and then M1A1. Once 1992 hit, the US released the first M1A2s into service and in â93, had the best firepower among all tanks, being the only ones capable of defeating K-5 at combat range. In 1999, Germany unveiled the Leopard 2A5 and the pendulum once again swung back in their direction. This would only last a couple years before M1A2 SEP with M829A3 entered service. Since then, the Leopard 2 never really eclipsed the Abrams afterwards. Their tungsten ammunition was still considerably inferior even with the L/55 at the release of 2A6. It gets dicy when talking about 2A6M and 2A7, but M1A2 SEPv3 is currently the most advanced NATO tank in service right now, and M829A4 is currently the best 120 mm ammunition in the world.
Germany is developing new ammunition and modifications to their breech to allow them to fire higher pressure ammo called KE2020NEO or DM73A1. This should supposedly match M829A4 roughly, albeit over 5 years late and with a longer barrel.
But if the gun and FCS department were the only areas the Leopard 2 bested the Abrams, they certainly lost that spot after the 80âs.
Sorry but thats not really true. the 2a6 tungsten ammo isnt really inferior at all. also using depleted uranium at all(in whatever it is,armor or ammo) is the most stupid fucking thing. the only good thing about it is that its cheap af. on the downside: higher cancer rates among crew and population where this ammo gets fired. US tanks are forbidden to use DU rounds on german testing sites. thank god
@@chechenfeels yep, they use depleted uranium because the main wolframium deposit on earth its on China and the second ones in Germany and Chile.
@@chechenfeels Sorry but that's not true. DM63A1, the current most advanced ammunition in service with the Bundeswehr, is objectively inferior to M829A4. Not only is it made of an inferior material compared to the US uranium-alloy, but it's also only about 2/3 as long. The extended L/55 barrel exists to compensate for the weaker pressure ammo compared to what the US uses.
As for the armor, uranium is a dense material just like tungsten. There is 0 advantage tungsten has as armor over uranium, and there's never been a case of higher cancer rates among crew. That's a lie and proven to be false in multiple studies.
Also, the DU "cancer rates" are just media BS. It's less radioactive than getting an X-Ray. On top of that, Tungsten is just as toxic as DU when aerosolized.
@@chechenfeels Keep spreading the wrong information about radiation and DU. I swear, you say the word radioactive and people assume you'll die if you so much as look at the material. Any kind of heavy metal when aerosolized is gonna cause negative health effects. No one said warfighting was clean.

Nice clip. The Leopard 2 is a interesting piece of modern history.
Man this is the right channel since I know every World War II tank and German Branch USA branch USSR branch and experimental branch
Cant wait
I think "Best Tank" is too close to call between the Abrams and Leo2. Their overall capabilities are nearly identical and the value of their differences usually depend on one's preferences than something that can be definitively measured.
Chally 2 feels left out đą
@@Kyle-gw6qp chally 2 is the best mbt especially now its been confirmed that it's getting upgraded.
I would say the Abrams gets the edge solely on the pretext of it being proven in combat the Leo really hasnt had that many engagements to confirm all their claims
@@bambihall169 Chally has been proven better in combat of abrams?
@@rsaviation6299 No the Challenger 2 like the Abrams are monsters in their own right but I would argue the Abrams has been more active recently than the Challenger-2
I think the Leopard 2 is a great tank because it can do anything well enough. Sure, the reason so many were purchased is that they were basically bargain price after the Soviet Union collapsed; but that has given way to so many different upgrades and options that can be placed on it today. Not the best, but very reliable and versatile.
yeah its modularity and upgradability is why the thing is so popular for exports. every country can modify and make their own versions of it with addon armor where they think they need it. Like the STRV122 for example.
A country being able to afford it is actually an exceedingly important factor. If you can afford 100 Leopard 2 from a post-Cold War bargain sale or 20 some-other-MBT with no discount, there's simply no other tank that would be five times better than Leopard 2!
Turns out they weren't that good
Is a part 2 still coming?
