BOB MARLEY ONE LOVE 4K UHD BLU-RAY REVIEW

  • 4K UHD Blu-ray review to the biopic on the life of Bob Marley. Image aspect ratio is approximately 2.40:1 and sound is Dolby Atmos. There is only the 4K disc in this pack which in addition to the movie itself holds about an hour of extra features in lower quality high definition. It is a dual layer, 66Gb disc but I spotted no evidence of compression which is not surprising as the 55 to 60Gb left for the main feature should be more than adequate for a running time of under two hours.

    John, you have a knack of making a film ‘of no interest’ interesting…! I’m not really into music biopics, but I did enjoy ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in 4K…

      Oh yes, that was a good one. Some of the course of events had been juggled around to make it seem more interesting or dramatic but other than that it captured the spirit of Queen. I saw them live three or four times because my brother was a big Queen fan.

    Hi John! Great to hear this 4k was worth the purchase i know my daughter and boyfriend went to cinemas to see it and assured me lots of young people love bob marley's music hahah so will watch this asap. The sound alone seems enticing to add this to my collection thanks so much hope all is well over there Cheers D!!

      Morning Dave. If young people like Bob Marley then that explains why this was made and the huge budget allowed for it. I was assuming it had enticed a load of older people back into cinemas. It doesn't seem to be a very popular film on the home video market though which is a shame if I'm correct. John.

    Fascinating as usual John and interesting, to put things into perspective the ~£300 for a Super 8 copy of Alien in ~ 1991, (taking into account inflation and purchasing power today by comparison) would be the equivalent of ~ £872! Proving your very point that when it comes to technology, everything actually falls in 'real price' terms to its 'marginal cost of production' yet it makes us wonder why everything feels like it is going up and up forever! Jeff Booth is someone that explains the fundamentals of this concept and why it just seems that other costs today seem much more expensive when it comes to most essential things that we need today. Top marks!

      @moviecollector5920  Před 26 dny +1

      Good morning Mike. I wonder how much a two hour feature costs on Super 8 today. I expect it would be around £1000 so I'll have to look into that. By contrast, I got my 35mm print for £122 delivered. That's the so-called 'Director's Cut' though and it seems many enthusiasts were able to get a print once the theatrical run was over so clearly someone diverted the prints from the usual bandsaw and crusher demise of 35mm general release prints and get them into the hands of film collectors.

    If you enjoy Reggae music, I’d like to recommend a 1981 British film, “Babylon”. It’s got quite an interesting history of being banned, traded by bootlegs, becoming a cult film, then recently restored and released in the US. Of particular note, for you, is the spectacular cinematography-it has no right looking as good as it does given the budget (the DP went on to win Oscars), and the time capsule shots of life in London during the Thatcher era. The UK blu-ray has some questionable subtitles, but the US Blu-ray (with better subs) is region locked. Highly recommended for so many reasons, the soundtrack chief among them.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 28 dny

      The mid-1980's were a great time for Britain, no doubt about that but 1981? We were still in the worst of times then after the complete debacle of the 1970's. I've never seen Babylon from 1981 but that surely could not exactly have been the best time to make a documentary in this country. I was never much into reggae but there was no denying some of the great hits from Mr. Marley. John.

    • @BeefyMon
      @BeefyMon Před 28 dny

      @@moviecollector5920 It’s not a documentary per se, it’s a film depicting the culture and rampant racism of the era, not a rosy view of that period I assure you. It shares the same screenwriter as Quadrophenia, and is an extremely compelling film in its own right regardless of music or subject matter. Unfortunately in 2020 Babylon became particularly poignant in America; a sign that things hadn’t changed much in 40 years. A glance at the 90 second 2019 US release trailer may convince you… or it may not :)

    Well, I must say that for some reason, this is the film that I least expected you to cover, but you did a fine job with it. I haven't seen the film yet. I have a mild problem with biopics: If the subject is a truly unique person, I have trouble watching someone pretend to be that person, unless the potrail is literally perfect, like Jamie Fox in Ray for example. Someone recommended that film, saying that I would forget that it wasn't actually Ray Charles. They were right.

It was quite a cinematic experience when I saw it in the theater in 2015. The sound was very good. I don't like the Ministry of Ungentlemenly Warfare, though it's from the same makers. Too woke for me.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 27 dny

      @@timothymathetes The Man From Uncle was a television series in the 1960's to cash in on the success of the James Bond films. There were double episodes of 'Uncle' that were re-edited into theatrical films. They were all good fun in their day but that was then. I presume the 2015 version is a remake but I don't think Robert Vaughan and David McCallum would have been the stars by then.
      I have the NTSC LaserDisc of Twister. I don't suppose the computer effects work will hold up as well from a 4K video transfer of the negative so expect them to look somewhat sub-standard at times. They held up in The Empire in 1996 though so you never know. That was a huge screen so would have helped cover up deficiencies.

I then watched the Marketing Film International cut down release probably a couple of dozen times and then around 1993 the film was released full length for home cinema enthusiasts. I had either the first or second copy that came into the UK. I've run it a lot.
