If you look at all the dunk highlights of Russ when he was with OKC and with Lakers, you’ll see that his head at or slightly above the rim in OKC but way below the rim with Lakers. I’d love to see how long Lebron could play if he’s humble enough to go out like Vince, as a solid player who gets minutes even when he’s not super athletic anymore. Dude’s still got lots of tread on his tires as an athlete now, so how long can he play if he is willing to take a bench role in his final seasons? The greatest flaw in the RW saga in addition to everything you so methodically pointed out, is that he is clueless and in total denial to what's going on in terms of his declining game. Not only does he not see how detrimental he is to the Lakers and his teammates; however he's not doing anything necessary to remedy his game. Especially when you are playing with the current GOAT of the NBA. One more thing, no matter how off your shot is, there's absolutely no excuse for a 44 million dollar man not to rotate defensively, and being extremely complacent in transition.

He is used to the rhythm and the tempo and momentum in OKC and KD always alleviate the pressure for him when he can pass around to KD and KD always make the score and when KD left, everyone in OKC let RW take the rebound and unlock the fastbreak and that's the reason he got triple double season. He lost that kind of tempo and momentum and the surrounding teammates that let him grab rebounds and unlock the fastbreak in LA so he lost the feel and groove in basketball......Basically in OKC he is in the mode just to attack because the team support him whereas in LA he has to facilitate and be more patient and strategic and not just purely attack and that's not the playing style RW is used to for past 10 years and therefore RW lost his handle of the ball feel and lost the game momentum and rhythm.........pure and simple

At his best, he was a great floor raiser for a team but because he's always been so hard headed and set in playing his own style, he basically sets a hard ceiling for how good his teams could be. He doesn't play in a way that works well with other great players. As he's lost some athleticism, it's really amplified his shortcomings as a player.
All that being said, you're right that it's not all Westbrook's fault. This is one of the most poorly constructed rosters in the league. Lebron can still play well enough to get them some wins. (Lebron probably pushed for the makeup of this team)

He is failing because in OKC the team facilitated him so he did not have to think, just attack. With Lakers, he is expected to facilitate as well as be Westbrook when needed. But he only knows how to do one of those two modes. Hence why he looks lost in every game this season.

He needed a coach to tell him what to do if not force him to play a certain way. It's too late for that now. He's not the "scapegoat" for the Lakers but I do feel he's the majority of the problem. I remember when this trade happened and I was nottt happyy. I like Westbrook as an individual player, but nott as a team player. I neverrr wanted him on my Lakers, especially at this age. I love how hard he plays, but he's so out of control. And for the simple fact he can't hit jumpers often. 2 players that I can see have talent, but I would never want on my team; Westbrook and Ben Simmons. I remember hearing Lakers might get Simmons too, and that shit had me pissed. Damian Lillard embarrassed the fuck out of Westbrook, and I'm glad he did that year. Westbrook could hardly even do shit, he'd score once and started rockin the baby, yellin, doin all this extra stuff ... and Lillard was just quietly shitting on them the whole series. Then when Lillard hit the game winner, I was like thank goodness. Send this mothafucka homee! And when Dame waved goodbye, it was like the greatest shit talk without even speaking. Even Paul George basically used Westbrook's disrespect, to become a shit talker too, that whole year. PG was chill on the Pacers, and he even seems more chill and at peace on the Clippers too. But Paul George on OKC just had a whole different aggressive attitude. Not saying Westbrook caused all of it, but I think he did cause some of it. It's like they were trying to intimidate people into being scared of them. 🥴 Like Westbrook chill, you can hardly hit a jumper to save your life right now. Dame & McCollum ain't scared of you.
You could pick any decent role player, and they woulda played so good on the Lakers, just simply catch and shoot players. But even just a good player that is not a main superstar in the league. Swap Westbrook for someone like CJ McCollum, or Kemba Walker. I feel like either one of them could help the Lakers drastically. Especially Kemba Walker where for a good while, it seemed like the Knicks didn't even want him.

Westbrook is similar to Iverson. Everything revolves around his athleticism. Now that he is older and closer to those around him he can't do what he did before. Because he was so athletic he didn't develop the proper skills (such as shooting) to mature as a player.
Westbrook's playstyle, like Iverson also requires teams to be built around him as he is too ball dominant and requires space to operate.

We all know russ is a super explosive player and likes to use pace to run of the defender but for some weird reason he has put his pace beyond full throttle... The second he gets the ball he just dashes and fucks up the play... Fastbreaks are cool but not if you aren't gonna convert... Its very frustrating... 2:16 very misleading stat if you think about it. Only 3 of the 10 players listed are not from this era. There were good players back then too, but the problem is these stats are SO EASY to get now. I have a feeling that when basketball finally cleans up it’s act and understands that hoop heads get just as excited for defense as they do for offense, this era will be like a steroid era for baseball, where every stat needs an asterisk next to it or something. I don’t even flinch with all these records being broken anymore as they mean nothing in this era, as EVERYONE is just feasting right now.
Russ averaged a triple double in this era but I’m not sure he could even average 15 minutes in any other era. He’s athletic sure, but so was Robert Pack. To say he’s Robert Pack is a little harsh, but as we can all see now, he’s not a good basketball player. At least Pack could take care of the basketball

    • @schuylersavage276
      @schuylersavage276 Před 2 lety +3

Do you think the 70s and 80s deserve as asterisk as well? Or are you just comparing the modern era to 95-2015 era basketball? If you go to basketball reference you can look at very detailed team stats yesr by year and it’s very telling.
I think a lot of people forget that until the last 5 years or so, the league was barley scoring 100 ppg per team. People forget about the 2000-2010 era and how defensive it was. People forget about the impact of removing the illegal defense rule. Look at some of the box scores from the playoffs even as recent as 2014 or so. Whoever made it to 80 wins. Do you know what changed everything? The 3 ball. That’s why teams are finally scoring as much as they did during the 80s again. 20/21 the NBA FG percent is only 17th all time. It’s below ALL of the 80s and early 90s as well as some other well older years. So it’s NOT that it’s that much easier to make a basket now. But get this: the league is the most EFFICIENT it has ever been. An effective FG percentage of 54 percent! Why is this? The 3 ball!!! Finally the league realized that if they can get their team to shoot above 33 percent on 3s that is just as good as shooting 50 percent on 2s. So they get eveyone to work on their 3 ball and now we have all teams almost shooting at least 35 percent from 3 or so. And taking 30-40. THAT is why the league is so efficient now and scoring as much as it was back in the 80s 70s and early 90s. They might not be taking as many shots or shooting as high of a FG percent, but they are shooting MUCH more 3 point shots!
Do you know another reason for why the 3 ball revolution happened? Because defense just got SO good! Teams were able to run these man to man schemes with ZONE principles. Strong side overall on ALL of teams best players. Packed the paint. It made it SO hard to get to the hoop. 10 times harder than it was when there was hand checking Allowed BUT illegal defense meant players got to go 1 on 1. Illegal defense allowed to guaranteed spacing. Got to stick to your man even if he can’t shoot. So when they got rid of that? It didn’t matter if they eliminated hand checking, teams were able to have players so shifted to whoever had the ball that it became So hard to score individually in isos!
SO guess what happened? The only way to counteract this was getting much more skilled, especially in 2 areas: shooting 3s for anyone who is on the court surrounding a star player AND all star players being able to make more difficult cross court passes to hit open shooters on time in the shooting pocket of the defense sags!
We have also seen in this era a new wrinkle, the implementation of the lob catching big man. It’s all to counteract teams overloading on star players.
One last thing…you know how eveyone says the league is so soft with fouls now? Guess what? 21/22 NBA teams average the least amount of FTs ever in NBA history, despite better perimeter shooting allowing for more spacing and drives to the hoop.
You can read about it if you want to, but there were league mandates from the powers that be and comp committees to reward players for contact at the basket LESS and LESS. They wanted to incentivize more exciting badkwbrall. Fast breaks and 3s. Not iso ball to get to the hoop slowly and draw a foul with soft contact. The NBA HaTES free throws. They don’t want to slow the game down, so they simply call less fouls now. That doesn’t mean players get fouled any less if you watch the film, but they let a lot more simple fouls go then before. Body contact on shots at the rim is let go all of the time even if it’s technically a foul by rule. Go watch some 70s and 80s and 90s highlights. While some teams took advantage of no flagrant foul rule and would reallt hit people hard at the rim, there were ALSO WAY MORE soft foul calls in the paint.

Westbrook will play great on a team like GSW. Lebron teams are normally great at fast breaks but it’s a half court offense. And Westbrook is limited by the slow moving offense.

You both have brain damage. It's not any team's fault. It's Westbrook's fault. He would literally ruin GSW's chemistry. This guy needs a few years in the G league and humble himself and stop acting like an all star.
He is a decent third option when he's not turning the ball over six times a game, and that's all he is.

I think constant starting lineup changes are throwing them off as well. There's just no rhythm or solid minutes. 28+ starting lineups is way too much change. This ain't a video game, they need a solid rotation to gel. Just a fans opinion of course. Im sure its much deeper, but from every game I've watched almost all the players look confused on what to do next.

Surely LeBron has played with/against Westbrook enough in all star games and in the NBA to have a sense of how this would have all played out with Westbrook on his team. The trade for him just looks desperate in hindsight. LeBron is gonna go free agent and sign with whoever drafts Bronny and leave the Lakers holding the bag for all of these moves for aging superstars.

LeBron’s need to add Russ was like a nuclear arms race response to the Nets adding Harden. There was no real logic to it just the arrogance to think that he could make it work against all logic. He saw his easy road to another title threatened and his ego allowed him to think that this move of desperation would show him to be great for molding Russ into the player that would fit. If it failed Russ would be the easy scapegoat. This is where we are now.
