  • Randy Travis - Diggin Up Bones (1986). Lyrics included. From the album "Storms of Life". Possibly the best Randy Travis song ever!

Last night I dug your picture out from our old dresser drawer
I set it on the table and I talked to it 'til four
I read some old love letters right up 'til the break of dawn
Yeah I've been sittin' alone diggin' up bones
Then I went through the jewelery and I found our wedding rings
I put mine on my finger and I gave yours a fling
across this lonely bedroom of our recent broken home
Yeah tonight I'm sittin' alone diggin' up bones
I'm diggin' up bones, I'm diggin' up bones
Exhuming things that's better left alone
I'm resurrecting memories of a love that's dead and gone
Yeah tonight i'm sittin' alone diggin' up bones
And I went through the closet and I found some things in there
Like that pretty neglige that i bought you to wear
And I recall how good you looked each time you had it on
Yeah tonight I'm sittin' alone diggin' up bones
I'm diggin' up bones, I'm diggin' up bones
Exhuming things thats better left alone
I'm resurrecting memories of a love that's dead and gone
Yeah tonight I'm sittin' alone diggin' up bones
I'm resurrecting memories of love that's dead and gone
Yeah tonight I'm sittin' alone diggin' up bones
    (Paul Overstreet/Al Gore/Nat Stuckey)

Amen. Perfect comment for this song - My beloved and I were fortunate enough to have seen him perform here in Izmir Turkey and everyone was so grateful for him coming here to entertain us. He put on a great performance for us and one we all enjoyed, although many of us were not Country & Western fans.

Today is one year that I lost my Dad and being from a rural area in Canada when I turned 19 and was able to go out with my parents, local bands would play this song and my dad and I would dance to it, I learned so much from him, and to anyone who has a good stepparent just remember they chose to be a part of your life even when they don't have to be, and my dad was an amazing man, to me he wasn't a stepparent he was a dad in every sense of the word and I miss him dearly.

My loving wife of 17 years passed away 40 days ago. I made a few changes to the lyrics of this great song (the changes make it so personal). I do still cry when I dig up her memories.
Last night I dug your picture out from our old dresser drawer
I set it on the table and I talked to it 'til four
I read some old love letters right up 'til the break of dawn
Yeah I've been sittin' alone diggin' up bones
      [Verse 2:]
Then I went through the jewelry and found your wedding rings
I found the lovely watch you wore, and a few other precious things
Then I cried and weep all night, for our poor empty home
Yeah tonight I'm sitting alone diggin' up bones
      [Chorus:]
I'm diggin' up bones, I'm diggin' up bones
Exhuming things that's better left alone
I'm resurrecting memories of my wife, who’s dead and gone
Yeah tonight I'm sittin' alone diggin' up bones
      [Verse 3:]
And I went through the closet and I found some things in there
Like that pretty negligee that I bought her to wear
And I recall how good she looked each time she had it on
Yeah tonight I'm sittin' alone diggin' up bones
      [Chorus]
I'm diggin' up bones, I'm diggin' up bones
Exhuming things that's better left alone
I'm resurrecting memories of my wife, who’s dead and gone

The smell of honey-tonk/bar/dive along with the music emanates from the speaker, as I listen to this piece; memories of adolescence also come out long before I learned what honey-tonk/bar/dive smelled like.

I really enjoy Randy's music. He has ALWAYS been a favorite of mine. He was an INDIVIDUAL when everybody else wanted to be generic or just like everybody else. He is not perfect and yes he had made his share of mistakes (who hasn't?), he is only human. I say all of that to say this; I will be praying for Randy Travis. Will you do the same?

Randy Travis will always be one of my favorite country singers. He is real country the way it still should be. When he sings, you know he's giving it all he has. One of my favorite cartoon episodes is an episode of the Nicolonian show Hey Arnold. Randy Travis makes an appearance as a country singer. It is quite fun. Also, he was on quite a few episodes of the show Touched by an Angel.
