The guy having his leg amputated w/out anesthesia is a living miracle to survive. That is cruelest and most traumatizing thing I have heard someone having to go through. How can they operate on something by just sawing off a body part like cutting vegetables?! Thank you for sharing and letting them speak their experiences. It is terrible to hear how so many people in North Korea suffer from famine, yet in other countries a lot of food go to waste.
Being a doctor myself I can only imagine they did not have the tools nor the medicine to operate properly. You cant locally anaesthecise such a huge area because the accumulated dosage needed for such a long operation would be fatal, so only a full anaestethic would be a viable option, but that requires a respirator which they probably didnt have. They probably only had a manual bonesaw, no electric tools we use nowadays and even with proper tools operating on a legbone is physically demanding. Because of the lack of tools the probably had to cut off the hand, because operating on the fingers would require specialised, small tools and expertise in handsurgery they probably did not have. I can only make a guess, of course, but the decision the surgeon had to make was either let the child die to his severe injuries, or perform an operation under horrible conditions without any ressources we take for granted in modern operating theaters. It must have been horrible for everyone involved, but it was either that or certain death for the child.

In the previous interview, one of the defectors also said he still remember seeing one of the girls searching food with him died in front of his eyes and he still felt guilty over it. 😭😭😭

I agree, what evil, what would it had been for her another 3 or 5 years of the same, it breaks my heart to hear of such suffering of poor people let alone a child, I believe in the Almighty Father Yahweh/Jehovah and his son Yahshua/Jesus who came and died for mankind, someday there will be a resurrection and this young child will come back to life, but this time there will be no evil people no evil rulers, we will live in peace righteousness and joy with Holy Spirit under the rule of a gentle kind King the Son of God Himself.
I'm really glad that more North Korean defectors are speaking up about what they've went through in North Korea. It's truly devastating to hear about what these men went through and to know that it is still going on today is almost like a wake up call. I hope that in our lifetime, we get to see the Kim dynasty overthrown and possibly be able to reunite the Koreas. It'll take a while, but it's not impossible! Thank you guys for taking the time to make this video, especially the defectors.
It's truly heartbreaking. It's insanity the confluence of Political interests that keep that regime going for so long. I don't want to get political, but China will never allow the union of both Koreas, as it will mean a NATO member and a US ally right on their border. North Korea will probably have to remain as a buffer Nation between them.

My mom told me similar stories near the end of the soviet union for people in siberia. They had working camps and there was a huge hunger as well. She told me she found old bread that went bad and had to wash and eat it. Also how whole families would commit suicide because of the hunger.

the people intervieved starved during the famine, the famine is long over, they even say in the video that this all hapened during the years of the famine. Today it's much better, atleast people aren't starving to death.

Sure there’s no famine, but the majority of people there are still living in total poverty, are worked like dogs for basically slave labor and live off of mostly government supplied rice (only getting meat on special occasions). And on top of that they have no freedom, no democracy and no contact with the outside world. Sounds like hell to me.
At 8:14 I noticed that the North Korean guy is pretty short compared to the south guy. I think it's because of malnutrition.

There's some vital factors that play into whether or not you reach your potential height ; if you are neglected as a child you will have a growth deficiency and become short , or if you are malnourished from you are a child. Of course some nations are just shorter, but North Koreans could become taller if they were able to get the same food as South Koreans; I mean South Koreans are very tall these days right? This is over many years, because their resources became better.

This is so sad. Everyone of the North Korean defectors I've heard from these videos are so amazing. Their stories are so inspiring to me. North Korea is a truly horrific place and I want to help as much as I can and I hope that one day North Koreans can be freed from the hell they were born into.

With all due respect, what are you talking about? China sends N. Korean defectors back, and China is and has been the financial bulwark that's allowed N. Korea to survive financially for the past few decades. China wouldn't let them go hungry? I have nothing against the Chinese, and I understand their motivations, but this comment is laughable. China sends defectors back to N. Korea.
S. Korea has had at one point a "Sunshine Policy." Massive amounts of aid was given to N. Korea. The USA at one point also gave incredible amounts of aid. Did that go to the poor who need it most? What do you think? It's the same in African countries ruled by despots too. The Aid simply makes it way to the powerful anyway.
S. Korea also gives N. Koreans free education, monthly allowance, and offers them other social programs to help them get integrated into S. Korean society. There are, in fact, even popular TV shows centered completely around N. Koreans giving their point of view. CZcams 이제 만나러 갑니다 or 모란봉 클럽.
I mean no disrespect, but for someone writing so passionately, perhaps you should read up on the topic more before. This is a very difficult political and social situation that you seem to be taking too lightly just shouting "what is S. Korea doing?" "what is China doing?"

I heard one interview of a man who said that he has problems to work in South Korea because people don't want to to be served by this man. In my eyes North and South Koreans are the same Koreans. It's not their fault that the one of them were born in North and the other were lucky to be born in South. if you were born in South then it's not because you deserved it somehow , it's just because you were lucky to be born not in North Korea . There are many places that are hell for many people, like Myanmar for Rohingyas, North Korea for Koreans, Muslims in India etc . I see myself also lucky because I wasn't born in hell. I wish you all the luck. And I really hope that you will continue live in peace.

I think to myself why don't the people just rise up and take the country back! But then I realize not only do they not have weapons but there famished as well. Hard to fight when you're starving to death. This place is one of the worst human rights violations in the world and something's got to be done about it. Very tragic situation. In a country like North Korea, there is no voting system. Kim Jong Un's family have been in power since the "end" of the Korean war. North Koreans are supposed to think of the family as gods and royalty and can not speak out. Think of this system as something similar but worse than a royal government system.

This issue itself is quite complex. It is extremely dangerous to start a war with North Korea. Even if their weapons and military are weak, they still have nuclear weapons which endanger the surrounding countries. Yes, I am aware that many other countries (like the USA), have nuclear weapons as well, however, the USA does not want to use nuclear weapons because they do not want a repeat of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WWII - no one wants a repeat of that. Unfortunately, with Trump in power of the USA, we might actually have a Korean War II and quite possibly a WWIII. South Korea does not want to start a war with the north matter how much they want to help the powerless citizens. We all want to help but there's no right way to do it

The fact that China agrees to send these guys back is actually these guys' ONLY HOPE.
If China didn't make such a deal with NK, the guard on the line between the to countries would be just as tough as the one with South Korea. That would make the northern passage completely impossible.

A good friend of mine is a history teacher. We watch your videos together and he incorporates some of these stories into his lessons on North Korea to spread awareness. This is important work you're doing. Keep it up.

I really want to thank you for opening up the world to the rest of the nations by sharing people's life stories and experiences. It has meant so much to me to become increasingly informed.
I'm always astonished at "man's inhumanity toward man"---and also, deeply touched by man's will to survive, and the goodness reflected in so much of humanity.
Like Kai, I am also Japanese/German, born almost 67 yrs ago after the 2nd world war. I was born in Canada--my Japanese father died in a freak accident, and the caucasian side were unaccepting of me. I ended up in foster care- so, I too have a story.
It makes me feel less alone to be able to go online and hear how people persevered.
You are doing a valuable and good thing to share their stories. Also- it takes courage on your part because the truth is seldom received well. I know that you pay a price for your honesty.
I love the way that you work toward increasing understanding and empathy between the Asian nations.

Wow.....I remember that in the summer of 1997 while in South Korea. I had a part time job at clothing store after school. One day, my coworker passed out at work and people said she didn’t eat anything for three days ... all for a diet!! Back then all South Korean were on diet really badly.......
And now I know at the same time so many North Korean children were dying of hunger?! Sooooooo sad😭😭😭😭.
We didn’t know bc the South Korean government didn’t let us know! Too bad.....
We need to do something.

These North Korean defectors are such warm hearted people, especially after been through those tragedies, you can tell by what they said that they have really good personalities!
Sometimes we think our problems are the worst of all! While watching this I realized our problems are nothing and we should be grateful for what we have. Seeing that man without his leg and arm is an inspiration for all of us! For all of those who think about suicide remember there are always people in a worst situation than us!
This actually nearly made me cry this is so sad, the world needs to be told this no matter how gruesome and I’m so happy that people are speaking up about it...

It is amazing that these men survived. The government cares less about it's citizen's, and yet they challenge the United States. I am in awe that these men are willing to tell their stories and pray that God will protect them.

I´ve lived all my life without needs, I could eat, had a roof, new clothes every now and then, good education, and a loving family. I can´t even begin to imagine what is like to be living in those conditions for so many years to then have the freedom to choose whatever you like to eat. Must be so weird. I´m glad they could made it out.

Another powerful testimony from North Korean defectors. While I'm not really rolling in dough, either, I was able to give a meager contribution.
