- I am so relieved to have finally decided upon our new reading curriculum for the first grade school year.
After receiving a sample of a Christian Light Education unit in the mail (you can go on their website and order a sample) I was immediately impressed by the rigor expected of first grade students by CLE. We finished The Good and The Beautiful and it just didn't feel like enough. I felt that my daughter needed more of a challenge for this first grade homeschool year.

We switched from the good and beautiful language and math grade one and we have done kindergarten too and my daughter was frustrated a lot with it. We switched to cle and she is so happy and loves the no fluff. Now for the learning to read you can start on light unit 105 if your daughter knows alot already. It is super gentle! We love it!
Yes! Those books are very convenient and easy to take along. 💕😉
I have a feeling we will make the switch over to CLE for other subjects in the future now too!!

I used CLE for kindergarten and after we finished we went to TGTB, and still working through TGTB 1st grade, I personally enjoy all that TGTB covers in it's language arts curriculum.

I got the learning to read for my son he was doing the good and the beautiful along with this one … he loves it not to mention his writing has improved sooo well I was shocked ! ❤❤
We started it about a week ago and I swear I am already seeing such an improvement in her handwriting too!! I am loving this curriculum so much already

Do we need the teachers guide for reading 1? We have it for learning to read but lately we haven’t really needed it. Their sight work flash cards are so great.
I actually just ordered the flash cards! I was using the back of the book and hated flipping back and forth. We are in the Learning to Read unit so I use the teachers guide for that, but we will be moving into the level 1 soon and will let you know if I find myself using it!
I'm actually so on the fence between doing TGATB and CLE for first grade next year. I'm worried that TGATB design, while pretty, may be distracting. My main hesitation is the Learning to Read course since it'd be mostly review for her at this point. At the same time, review isn't a bad thing but I don't want her bored either.
I totally understand this thinking. There is a “Christian light education” families Facebook group that was really helpful for me. They told me we could go quicker through learning to read if it was too easy for my daughter, then take our time with reading 1. I really did love how beautiful TGAB was but it really just felt all over the place with random skills being thrown at my daughter throughout the week. But that was kindergarten!
I completely agree about TGAB I would not recommend cle has placement test too if you need it.
