Basically Naofumi can't take advantage of his position of power over her because of the curse of wrath. He literally can't love, or even feel sexual attraction that way. Basically all the girls remark that all the sudden he got kinda creepy, but he gets over it because he realizes he needs the rage to actually fight back against the calamity that is consuming the world and he just doesn't have time for such things. Raphtalia understands and accepts this, no matter how much she wants to jump his bones. She also eventually becomes his complete equal, in every way. Like, she gains her own sacred weapon, and stands beside him as a complete equal on the battlefield and in managing his growing army. Eventually they get kinda banished from the world of shield hero, and she fucking follows him throughout space and time through sheer force of will, and in order to get back they have to make separate but connected journeys in which they have to place complete trust in the other, and should one of them falter they both fail. Basically the way it is described they have to walk through the void between the stars, along the way influencing and interacting with countless worlds, but never losing sight of their destination and never forgetting each other. So..... I dunno, I'm not as disturbed by the like.... 1-2 episodes where she was a suspicious and fearful child who he thought of as more like a daughter. Her physiology is not human, her mental state is not human, and she more than earned her place at Naofumi's side as his complete and total equal.
Totally agree. When I tried showing this show to my brothers and my dad walked by, he summarized that it was just a show about a guy having his own harem which couldn’t be further from what’s happening

At least that's what Ren called it while comparing Naofumi to a nagging mom. Seriously, Naofumi is literally a parent. But what I love most about him, is how he is the fun dad who, when people call him a villain, doesn't correct them but just plays along and rolls with it. Like the scene where he threatens the bandits to make Filo eat them and Filo, even though she has no idea what her papa is doing, also just rolls with it. I love naofumi and am excited for season 2.
In the last episode, Filo openly voiced her desire to be Naofumi's second wife. But that can be chucked up as some what topical child behavior. And like most dads he plitley shruged it off. Thinking she will grow out of it.

His being the shield hero undoubtably did play a part in her romantic feelings, but more importantly, it helped with her healing. As pointed out, her parents talked a lot about the previous shield hero and how he was kind and fair to Demi-humans, a rare trait in that world. Before everything went bad that set the seed in her to trust Naofumi before they had even met, and while it wasn't enough to just magically make the trauma go away it must have allowed her to drop the walls around her faster than it would with any other person in the world.
Naofumi *does* have a point, though. Age-wise, Raphtalia is still very much a child, despite having accelerated physical growth and maturity. And using the world's logic, she is still considered property of Naofumi, and is affected by shield abilities to the point of being an extension of Naofumi's will; it is difficult for us to get in Naofumi's head, as he isn't the typical bland viewer-insert character like other isekais of the time or in the same subgenres.
If Naofumi cross that father/daughter line, I riot. I know it’s not illegal in their world, but Naofumi is from our world and immoral act has been imprinted in his life growing up until he’s an adult.

It was actually revealed in book 16 that Naofumi has been in love with her since around episode 5. But because of the number of years he mistook it for parental love. Even now because of his trauma and how he views himself he's nervous to act on them. So he's trying to take it slow and just dropping hints for her.
I know the Web Novel is a completely different route on some things compared to the rest of the stuff, but I do hope they keep or do something like the one part in it where Raphtalia gains absolute offense and Naofumi gains absolute defense. It's a huge showing of how the two put their full trust in each other to where she will be his sword as he will be her shield and it's honestly quite touching. There's been moments where they've shown that trust before, but that part stands out a ton considering it's like Raphtalia sacrificing any and all defense and Naofumi sacrificing any and all offense because of their absolute trust in each other.

Second: important to notice if you read the LN, is that Naofumi harshly/ sarcastically replies anyone that talks back to him save only 2 characters: the queen, given that she is the highest authority (and she surely knows how to show it) and Raphtalia.
Through all my knowledge of vanilla, romcom, and harems I can say for sure that this man is 100% correct with a 20% extra credit for including both characters backstory
I think the biggest question is why would any think she wouldn't love him He saved her life, gave her hope and the strength and support to retake her life from the horror of the kingdom. He taught her to be strong, gave her knowledge, healed her from her illness's and overall health. And finally he helped save 1 out of her 2 friends after he spent his time helping the kingdom and it's citizens 1 life at a time. Even if it was for his own goals he still put people over himself.
Raphtalia is a good example of a well-written and story-important love interest for the protagonist, and I really wish more isekai animes would follow her style and example instead of having their bland viewer-insert character surrounded by overly sexualized and bimbo-esque girls (yes, girls, as many of these isekais depict teenaged love interests) in the interest of creating a sex harem.

The most I'd tolerate would be a love triangle, where eventually the guy chooses who he'd really want to be with, and the one whom he didn't choose wouldn't get all upset about it, and respect his decision.

Maybe the best recent example would be "Skeleton Knight in Another World', where the MC is reincarnated as the said skeleton knight who always keeps his helmet on and tries to help those in need. (He's OP as hell, and it's a pretty good series, so far.)

Good analysis. You hit all the major points, without spoiling much. Honestly, Naofumi is an extremely well-written heroic character, because he shows the split-paradigm of how he views himself vs how he is viewed by others. He sees himself as a tyrant, only doing things for selfish reasons because he wants to have a nice place to live. But to others, that means that wherever he goes he makes everything better. The motive doesn't matter. He is helping. And Raphtalia kind of serves to bridge that gap, making her an important character in the story. And frankly, while I'm scared to put this out into the world, because I love Raphtalia as a character, I think that one of the most impactful and game-changing things the writers could do would be to kill Raphtalia in the story. Is it unlikely because of how strong she is? Yes. Is she important to Naofumi's character arc? Extremely. Would it send him into a blind rage, where he succumbs to the cursed shield like never before? 100 percent. Hell, it could be the end of Melromark for good. But would it also develop his strength to insane levels, force him to face his deepest insecurities, and give the rest of the cast time to shine as individuals? Yes, yes and yes. It would be incredibly subversive, divisive among the community, and drum up massive hype for the show. And, if the writers are as good as I believe they are, it gives them a chance to shine with one of the darkest arcs the show would ever see and an impossible problem to resolve. And no, that doesn't mean introducing resurrection. That would be a cop-out.

I really do need to get back to reading this series. I know the published in English books are up to volume 22. I think the last one I read was either 17 or 18. With 19, 20 on the shelf with 21,22 on my amazon list.
Honestly, Raphtalia and Naofumi's relationship is my all time favorite out of anime. Its the first time I truly felt that the two main male and female leads had a real connection. Actual depth to their relationship beyond the physical. He gave and gives her a purpose as The Shield Hero's Sword, and she gave him someone who trusts and supports him, things they both desperately needed at the time of their meeting.
hey, just to mention. What you talked about in the first 3 min, was only what was visible in the anime. In the light novel, they went a bit deeper into this period. Where between she was sold to the slave merchant when the shield hero found her. In the period she was bought by a rich family as a servant slave and was treated reasonably fine but was returned due to her nightmares. this also decreased the self-image of her self, after this a few others bought her only to torture her and to bring her back after. This is why she looked that scared after the shield hero said she wanted her.
I kinda forget, but I think the kids goes to slave traders first. Since Keel is not at Idol's place by the time Raphtalia is there. In Yari manga, I think Keel hasn't been sold to Idol at all and is still at Beloukas' tent. Well, only that one detail needs to be corrected. In the web novel (my favorite version of the story), Naofumi explicitly states multiple times, even hundreds of chapters apart, that the reason he chose raphtalia over other slaves is because she was the same gender as Mein, and he could torture her, but ended up caring for her instead. Also, the reason Naofumi doesnt reciprocate these feelings is that the wrath shield still makes him numb. His reasoning is that he wants to treat his slaves equally, and they are all children.
Naofumi being the Shield Hero was probably the first beacon of hope and trust for Raphtalia. She remembered her parents telling her the Shield Hero in particular treats demi humans very well.

I believe you forgot to mention that she had another owner before the Idol Rabier (the perverted fat man). The owner was some kind of lord because he bought her to be a servant and he was kind to her but she was ultimately sold back because she screamed at nights because of her nightmares. The she was bought by the fat man and then Naofumi.
Say it for what it is, Stockholm Syndrome. He had power over her but he treated her kindly while cracking the whip only if she disobeyed. This isn't Naofumi's fault, he was broken too and wanted someone he could trust, and at that point, that meant a slave. He needed the control at that point, but fortunately, she was also what he needed to heal. They actually helped each other out... despite how insanely messed up their relationship started from.

Raphtalia is a good example of a well-written and story-important love interest for the protagonist, and I really wish more isekai animes would follow her style and example instead of having their bland viewer-insert character surrounded by overly sexualized and bimbo-esque girls (yes, girls, as many of these isekais depict teenaged love interests) in the interest of creating a sex harem.
Honestly I agree. I prefer characters which actual depth rather than some big boob chick with no personality outside of "is on love with bland self insert MC".
The most I'd tolerate would be a love triangle, where eventually the guy chooses who he'd really want to be with, and the one whom he didn't choose wouldn't get all upset about it, and respect his decision.

Sadly, that's not the case of most isekai series.
Maybe the best recent example would be "Skeleton Knight in Another World', where the MC is reincarnated as the said skeleton knight who always keeps his helmet on and tries to help those in need. (He's OP as hell, and it's a pretty good series, so far.)
I personally don't like it, it always seemed like they were a family and I loved it because it shows naofumi as the father or at least older brother and just thinking about them ending up together makes me feel wierd.

Honestly, Naofumi is an extremely well-written heroic character, because he shows the split-paradigm of how he views himself vs how he is viewed by others.
He sees himself as a tyrant, only doing things for selfish reasons because he wants to have a nice place to live. But to others, that means that wherever he goes he makes everything better. The motive doesn't matter. He is helping.
And Raphtalia kind of serves to bridge that gap, making her an important character in the story. And frankly, while I'm scared to put this out into the world, because I love Raphtalia as a character, I think that one of the most impactful and game-changing things the writers could do would be to kill Raphtalia in the story.
Is it unlikely because of how strong she is? Yes. Is she important to Naofumi's character arc? Extremely. Would it send him into a blind rage, where he succumbs to the cursed shield like never before? 100 percent. Hell, it could be the end of Melromark for good. But would it also develop his strength to insane levels, force him to face his deepest insecurities, and give the rest of the cast time to shine as individuals? Yes, yes and yes.
It would be incredibly subversive, divisive among the community, and drum up massive hype for the show. And, if the writers are as good as I believe they are, it gives them a chance to shine with one of the darkest arcs the show would ever see and an impossible problem to resolve. And no, that doesn't mean introducing resurrection. That would be a cop-out.

I really do need to get back to reading this series. I know the published in English books are up to volume 22. I think the last one I read was either 17 or 18. With 19, 20 on the shelf with 21,22 on my amazon list.
Honestly, Raphtalia and Naofumi's relationship is my all time favorite out of anime. Its the first time I truly felt that the two main male and female leads had a real connection. Actual depth to their relationship beyond the physical. He gave and gives her a purpose as The Shield Hero's Sword, and she gave him someone who trusts and supports him, things they both desperately needed at the time of their meeting.
hey, just to mention. What you talked about in the first 3 min, was only what was visible in the anime. In the light novel, they went a bit deeper into this period. Where between she was sold to the slave merchant when the shield hero found her. In the period she was bought by a rich family as a servant slave and was treated reasonably fine but was returned due to her nightmares. this also decreased the self-image of her self, after this a few others bought her only to torture her and to bring her back after. This is why she looked that scared after the shield hero said she wanted her.

In the web novel (my favorite version of the story), Naofumi explicitly states multiple times, even hundreds of chapters apart, that the reason he chose raphtalia over other slaves is because she was the same gender as Mein, and he could torture her, but ended up caring for her instead. Also, the reason Naofumi doesnt reciprocate these feelings is that the wrath shield still makes him numb. His reasoning is that he wants to treat his slaves equally, and they are all children.
Naofumi being the Shield Hero was probably the first beacon of hope and trust for Raphtalia. She remembered her parents telling her the Shield Hero in particular treats demi humans very well.

I really like how Naofumi won’t cross that line because he is her adopted father, but she’s a raccoon person and in her world it isn’t taboo so she doesn’t know her love for him should just stay as father and daughter. Plus, as a father he never taught her anything about the birds and the bees.

The owner was some kind of lord because he bought her to be a servant and he was kind to her but she was ultimately sold back because she screamed at nights because of her nightmares. Say it for what it is, Stockholm Syndrome. He had power over her but he treated her kindly while cracking the whip only if she disobeyed. This isn't Naofumi's fault, he was broken too and wanted someone he could trust, and at that point, that meant a slave. He needed the control at that point, but fortunately, she was also what he needed to heal. They actually helped each other out... despite how insanely messed up their relationship started from.
nobody can hate on Naofumi because he had literally no reason to respect anyone in that world plus he wasn't sure was even real considering its set up like a video game. i would say fuck these NPS for sure
Stockholm syndrome only applies to kidnap/hostage victims or people who are in an abusive relationship and hence does not apply to their relationship or any relationship. Naofumi was a lot better than a typical slave master as he did take care of Raphtalia ever since he bought her and in return now she takes care of him
