      @@merylschoenbaum319 "DOES sound like an angel" - isn't that actually an OPINION dressed up as a fact? Since we all know exactly what angels sound like... That is one thing. Secondly, where is the negation? You are entitled to your opinion, just as I am entitled to mine - that Fragile both lyrically and musically is the bettet song, so don't you don't me, OK? Random notes: Guitarist Andy Summers is ten years older than Sting and drummer Stewart Copeland and was in The Animals (House of the Rising Sun) in the late 1960s after the first big split that led to their bassist becoming Hendrix's manager. Andy recently had a two person band called Circa Zero (album title Circus Hero) with musician Rob Giles who foes everything except guitar on that album. I vaguely know Rob as I've seen him at various tiny venues and he was in a band called The Rescues with some people I actually know. The Police influenced the reggae aspects of Rush including the end bit of The Spirit of Radio. Neil was a huge fan of Stewart in particular. Stewart Copeland was the drummer for The Police. He brother (their manager at this time) later founded IRS Records famous for discovering R.E.M. His father was in the CIA. The actual CIA. Sting started in the movie adaptation of Quadrophenia right after this album and that movie came out in (1979). Sting had later success. ;)

He and Mills Mills used to hang out with Ian who turned Bill and Mike onto all the new wave music that was coming out of England in the late seventies R.E.M. opened for the Police in December of 1980 at the Fox Theater in Atlanta when XTC canceled at the last minute. R.E.M. had a single on hibtone records and they had demo tapes circulating. The New York Times had already put their single on their best of list for 1981 They turned down an offer from R.C.A. and finally chose I.R.S. because it was an up an coming independent label known for letting artists make their own creative decisions.

    Best concert of my life - The Police, Synchronicity Tour at the Carrier Dome, second row. 1984. Around 2001, I was getting gas at a Chevron station in Hollywood when I ran into Stuart Copeland. I leaned over and read his credit card as he was handing it to the clerk to make sure it was him. I said "Stuart! Best concert of my life, The Police, Synchronicity Tour at the Carrier Dome, second row." He broke into a huge grin. Nice memory, both of those moments.

    Legends. Just straight up legends. They were barely able to stand each other sometimes but made some of the most epic music of all time. Side note: my hubby and I named both of our dogs after songs, Jett (Paul McCartney and Wings) and Rio (Duran Duran). I've decided our next dog is going to be named Roxanne because you won't be able to help but yell "Raaaaaahhhhxanne!" when you call her.

    The lineup: Sting (Gordon Sumner), vocals and bass; Andy Summers, guitar; Stewart Copeland, drums are all top shelf musicians. The reason why they sounded so good together is because nobody tried to set himself apart from the others as to who was best at what they did. They all checked their egos and played at the same level all the time.
    I can't think of any time that they didn't play together in that manner because they understood that in order for "the band" to sound good, they all needed to be at the same level. They gelled so well together without having to outdo each other. I honestly believe that had they even all tried to turn it up a notch, it would not have had the same effect.
    Sometimes, less is more and The Police are a great example of this.

      I’m a huge EC fan. “Watching the Detectives” is great, and I love the first album in general, but it doesn’t have The Attractions playing behind him. For that first album, the backing musicians were the guys in Clover (most of whom, I think, went on to be in Huey Lewis and the News).
      You need to go “This Year’s Model” to get the full EC sound. “Lipstick Vogue” would be a great choice. Pete Thomas’s drums are great and Bruce Thomas’s bass is phenomenal.

    • @RobertERensch
      @RobertERensch Před 4 lety +2

      Richard Nanian True enough, and agreed. Still, regardless of what developed, I was trying to get equivalents to “Roxanne” as far as what first made the public aware.
      I picked “Watching the Detectives” because it actually was the first tune with The Attractions. Did it even appear on the British first pressing? Anyhow, it was on the US first album.
      I play bass, and I’m amazed Bruce Thomas isn’t widely celebrated. I still haven’t learned all his lines. If showing his playing was my goal, I’d pick “Lipstick Vogue” or, later, “Shabby Doll”...
      Graham Maby was pretty hot, too. Nineteen seventy-seven through about 1983 was bass player paradise. New Wave was full of clever bass players. Check out William Mysterious on the Rezillos “Can’t Stand the Rezillos” album.

      @@RobertERensch D'oh! You're absolutely right about "Watching the Detectives." And I should know, because I read Elvis's "Unfaithful Music and Disappearing Ink," in which he talks about the making of "My Aim is True." Thanks for the correction.
      And yes, "Shabby Doll" is terrific. "Imperial Bedroom" as a whole may be his most critically acclaimed album. I admire it, but I often feel the need to hear his next album "Punch the Clock" right afterward. The exuberance of the TKO Horns is a welcome anti-depressant after the darkness of "Imperial Bedroom," and of course "Shipbuilding," with the Chet Baker solo, is a masterpiece.
      I like Maby's work a lot; I'm a Joe Jackson fan from the beginning, and he also played with Graham Parker, who is the third and probably most under-rated of the three. I don't know the Rezillos; I'll check them out. Curt Smith plays some nice bass on Tears for Fears tracks. Pete Farndon of the Pretenders was good. But my favorite bassist of that period, without a doubt, is Colin Moulding of XTC. Nearly every bass line he came up with is worth listening to, and I would argue XTC relied on him more than any band relied on the bassist since the Who and Entwhistle.
      Cheers.
