How to convert a garage into a room - DIY transformation

  • This is how to turn a garage into an extra room. This DIY transformation is simple to do and provides an extra room in the house for growing families. We used timber to frame out the brick pillars and then attached the plasterboard / drywall to the bricks. We also built an internal wall to seal off the room and provide a small storage area when the garage door is open. Great idea with the roller door storage . A great option than replacing with glass.

  • @frankeramooframranproductions

    I like that they kept the garage door and made a functional space as well. What I hate most about garage conversions is the exterior and the driveway going up to a wall, leaving the garage door makes it look aesthetically pleasing and natural to the house’s exterior

    If only a conversion were that simple in the UK. There's so many regulations around insulation, access, heating, etc, etc, that it makes is much harder. Glad you or the customer were happy.

      Nathan Brown The regulations here are quite strict too. I could be wrong but I’m assuming that they were the customer and that the planned conversion wasn’t certified as a habitable area prior to commencement.

    A vapour barrier should be installed along with your insulation. (It’s a special plastic sheet, different mil. thickness available). Check the placement of the vapour barrier based on you climate. The vapour barrier should be installed properly around vents and sealed using special tape to maintain air impenetrability.
    The installation didn’t meet any building code I’m familiar with.

    I'm a student of CZcams DIY channels. This job looked like something a homeowner would do instead of a pro. How could they put drywall in front of the garage door with no plywood or insulation. And the garage door will probably get water underneath. They didn't try to make any attempts to waterproof that opening. Maybe the homeowner gave instructions to do a quick and cheap job.

    All that effort to insulate has gone to waste because of the thermal bridge between the brick turrets and the plaster board 🤦🏻‍♂️
    Should’ve built an independent stud wall 10mm off of the brick work and insulated that. Would’ve shrunk your room a little but would’ve been a more sound option.

    • @billshowto
      @billshowto  Před 5 lety +6

      Unfortunately this was the only way to maximize space in this room. The insulation was installed for temperature control as well as acoustic. considering the plasterboard is being installed directly on the brick wall , the insulation was installed to provide as much insulation as possible with this method used 👍

    • @Ironbuket
      @Ironbuket Před 4 lety +1

      Some people dont consider that water can travel through brick. Brick is not waterproof it actually soaks up water like a sponge. So, attaching plaster board directly to it as others already mentioned is not a good idea. If you find you have done this already, go paint the outside of the brick with waterproofing or render the outside.
