    On Day 30 of my Round The World Trip for Food my wife and I decided to make a food trek to Brooklyn to eat one of the best pizzas in New York City. The pizza restaurant: Di Fara Pizza. We then went to Gloria’s Caribbean Cuisine to eat some fantastic Trinidad cuisine. It was another good day of food in New York City.
    1:35 Di Fara Pizza - When you do any kind of searching for the best pizza in New York City, it won’t take you long to find Di Fara Pizza, a family run restaurant in Brooklyn known for their incredible pizza. Also, when I went to NYC, many of you recommended that I needed to try Di Fara, so I decided that a pilgrimage was must. I arrived before they opened for lunch, and was first in line. I was a little torn as what to order, but finally just went with the classic round pie with half pepperoni and half cheese. The pizza took about 15 minutes to make and it came out of the oven hot and fresh. As soon as it came out, he chopped on some fresh basil. That first slice of pizza I had was one of the best pieces of pizza I’ve ever had. Everything tasted so pure and so balanced. The crust was right, the sauce and cheese were perfect. All the ingredients they use to make their pizza at Di Fara are from Italy, and so that’s part of the reason their pizza is so expensive. Is it the best pizza in New York City? I’m not really qualified to answer this as I haven’t been to all the famous pizza places in NYC. But what I can say is that Di Fara pizza is mind-blowingly good. Pizza price - $31
    9:45 Gloria’s Caribbean Cuisine - After finishing the pizza we moved on to Gloria’s Caribbean Cuisine, a restaurant in Crown Height known for serving Caribbean food and especially mostly Trinidadian food. I decided to order the curry chicken meal while my wife ordered the curry fish meal. Both of the meals were huge and came with sides, rice, and vegetables. The curry chicken and curry fish were both excellent, full of spice flavor. This was my first time to have Trinidadian food, and it’s made me want to go to Trinidad immediately. For excellent Caribbean food in New York City, Gloria’s Caribbean Cuisine is a friendly restaurant. Curry chicken meal - $11, Curry fish meal - $13.
    And that was basically it for the day. Ying wasn’t feeling too well, so we headed back to our hotel and rested. It was another great day of food in New York City!

    Hi Mark. The pureed vegetable is called callalloo. It is made from the leaves of the taro plant (also called dasheen bush), okra and Scotch bonnet peppers - all stewed in coconut milk.
    Trinidad and Tobago's population is multi-ethnic, with groups of people who trace their origins to West Africa, India, China, Portugal, Syria, England and elsewhere, as well as the original Amerindian community. Our cuisine is a melting pot of influences from all of these groups. The meal that you had reflects this diversity. The callalloo is West African in origin and the curry comes from India.

      Callaloo is awesome. I think the ingredients are typically dasheen leaves, okra, pumpkin, and coconut milk along with some green seasoning (some might add blue crab). And Trinidadian curry is my favourite curry in the world. The addition of all the green herbs (especially the blessed thistle or shadon beni) gives it a completely different dimension.

    • @stunnermanLFC
      @stunnermanLFC Před 7 lety +73

      why because i don't want to spend 31 dollars on a pizza? a pizza should be no more than 10-15 dollars.. at most.its not like its a fancy restaurant . its just a takeaway pizza. no matter how good the taste i wouldn't pay that for a pizza unless its fine dining then it makes sence. you can find much cheaper pizza in japan and switzerland wich are already expensive countries. a decent pizza in naples italy is around 4-5 euros. thats 6 USD

    • @gandaruvu
      @gandaruvu Před 7 lety +23

      There is a significant East Indian population in the Caribbean who were brought over by the British from India as laborers. Ditto Africans. V.S. Naipaul is a famous Trinidadian author with Indian roots. His book of short stories, 'Miguel Street,' is set in Trinidad right after WW II, and is a very interesting, fun read about Indian-Trinidadian culture of that time. In one of the stories, Naipaul muses about ingredients mysteriously crossing cultural barriers despite different racial groups keeping to themselves.

      Ms.Keysha: East Indians in South America too? That's news to me! I was surprised enough to know that the Japanese mass-emigrated to South American countries like Peru, but didn't know about the East Indians.

      I love callaloo. The dasheen leaves, pumpkin, okra, green seasoning, and coconut milk all goes together so well. And it compliments so many dishes very nicely. I usually eat it with coocoo and stew chicken (or beef or pork). I also sometimes eat it with my fried rice or chow mein. It's so versatile as a side dish.

      Well was that from a store or street vendor? Also I'm going to quote an excerpt from an article on the cost some street cart vendors pay the city just to have the privilege to sell from a certain spot.
      "Call it the half-million-dollar hot dog cart. Mohammad Mastafa of Astoria, Queens, has to sell almost that much in drinks and snacks annually to break even on the pushcart he owns at Fifth Avenue and East 62nd Street near the Central Park Zoo. He pays the city’s parks department $289,500 a year just for the right to operate his single cart there."
