Our latest Laos adventure continues as we leave Thaviang and start making our way towards the old capital of Xieng Khoung.. Muang Khoun. First we do a quick walking tour around Thaviang before making our way over the mountains again, handing out donations and talk about the ideal months of the year to visit Laos

We always come to Laos between Oct-Jan. The cost of the airfare tickets are more but we like the weather and we can go to many places without worry of the bad roads, rain, flood... Love our homeland LAOS. See you again in 2025 🥰
that is normal, after running lower rpm`s,sout will build up, when you increase the rpm`s it gets blone out on most desils
Hi Todd. The Black smoke is normal. the 1HZ does not have a lot of Torque, so it tends to struggle up hills a bit. But goes well on the highway. Loving the Videos,

I have 1997 dodge wit cummins diesel. Never smokes. can get slow on hills when it needs a new fuel filter. I can on over a bit of time and you won't notice. But it's not a Toyota. Mine is a bit slow on steep grades with turns but will pull or carry anything no problem. That's what a diesel is for. Have fun, that's what it's all about.

We had an Isuzu diesel SUV in the Philippines Todd. I'm no mechanic but had a lifetime of being around cars, motorbikes, trucks and buses. My suggestion is, dirty injectors or a clogged up air filter affecting engine breathing. Google will tell you what it could be. Bob. NZ.

Air filter is clogged
Todd maybe a injector service could help it will allow the fuel to atomise better and give a cleaner burn

If the mechanic says pistons are worn out since its second hand car you change piston valves and rings

Loved your little ramble around the small town showing all that was going on. Such a simple way of life but everyone so happy and enjoying life. They were happy to see you in their town. If the rings are worn out you change rings and valves

Injectors are dirty or worn. Good motor but nicer to drive with a turbo and fuel pump tune. Try an additive in the fuel a couple times. Remember they are a long lasting truck not a performance vehicle!
Filters can also be checked or fuel contamination but even if a car puffs smoke and its due to oil change due it should not loose energy while on first gear clutch realised foot on accelarater.

I haven't worked on but a few diesels but black smoke from gas or diesel is a sign of running to rich but diesels do normally "roll coal" smoke a lil. It could be a very dirty air filter or the injectors could be getting dirty. Both will make it run poorly and it'll be more pronounced up hills or under load but it is usual to have a lil more black smoke than normally in those situations.
I'd probably say it's more the air filter is getting real dirty after all the vids of all the dust from trucks etc. Wouldn't hurt to take it out now and again on your trips and bump it on something like the tire,bumper,log,stump to knock some of the dust out of it.
I live in an area that used to mine a lot of coal back in the 1800's till the mid 1900's an now they've started back up with a couple strip mines. There's a many piles of "dirty coal" we call slag piles from those bygone days. After only maybe a few hours of riding ATV's,SxS,s,or dirtbikes through them with one of more buddies the air filter will be real dirty. I always cleaned it after those days. It wouldn't surprise me if we also got black lung from it...haha

The 1HZ is a bullet proof motor, been around for donkeys years. A bit sluggish sometimes which is why toyota put turbos on later models. Yes they will blow smoke when you plant your foot, they all do that. I have the latest v8 diesel turbo with all the latest technology emission crap hanging off the engine & it blows smoke as well. You will see the older trucks blow plenty of smoke when the injectors start to wear. Some of the shonks over there bump up the injector pump to squirt more diesel into the pots to give more power and they pump out tons of smoke. Not allowed to do that here but no rules over there.

No but have had a couple of 80's and 200's and travelled with mates with troopies all over the oz on the worst roads ever, toyota are the most popular in the world for a reason. You can flog them on the brown and when you get back on the black the rattles just stop. 🙂Anyway i have worked on a few, i'm a retired mechanic now and drive cruiser wagons now, getting soft, i reckon if i drove a troopy now my fillings would fall out of my teeth.
BTY you can drop tyre pressures for sand & mud for more grip but on those rough roads whatever pressure you have, your kidneys are going to ache. 😂@@NowinLao

I have a 95 troopy 1HZ with 450000+kms, it recently started blowing more black smoke under load going up the Gillies range road than previously.
I had recently changed oil type to mineral from semi synthetic. I changed back and it seemed to reduce the amount of black smoke.
I also change oil every 5000kms and filter every 10000kms, or sooner if heavy conditions. If you want it to last longer do the basics yourself, and often; forget the after market modification/ bullshit.

When you started on the grass across from the dirt lot,,the tall house had a real interesting looking railing on the second or 3rd floor. The reason I noticed it,,it was almost a native American design,,from desert country. Arizona or Utah. And fun was had by all,,even the shy,,parent free recipient's of the beanies! Smoke is normal on any diesel under load unless it has DEF / emission control set up . 30+ years as a diesel mechanic that is my experience 🙂👍
Thanks Scot.. yeah it only happens under load, cruising up a hill, starts to struggle, give it a bit more throttle but can't pull and starts smoking. Started changing down before it labored 👌

What's the altitude you're driving at? If the air's thinner, you'll be down on power. And if all that dust has clogged your air filter, that will make it worse again.
If the smoke has a blue tinge to it and smells of un-burned oil, you may have an expensive bill ahead of you though.
If the car is on first gear clutch realised foot on accelarater it should be able to climb uphill when loaded.if it lacks the energy the air filters,the rings ,the pistons and valves should be checked.
Since the car is second hand if the mechanic says pistons are worn out you change piston rings and valves.if they say rings are worn out you change rings and valves.if they say valves are worn out you change valves and rings.maybe the other thing might be fuel contamination with water or oil change is due.
Cultures vary asian people mostly don't drink tea or coffee for breakfast.
... but both are very healthy if fresh brewed

I was on the phone yesterday with a friend from Nong Khiaw who claimed burning there only starts in April. I am a bit sceptical. Personally I prefer visiting during rainy season
Your friend maybe right for where he lives, but burning goes on in many other parts long before April. The wet season is our favourite time to travel here also 👌

Okay I'm trying to play catch up on your videos I know this video is a few months old but I'm trying to follow the storyline you probably got it fixed by now but I'm going to say that it's your fuel filter probably plugged up on you I'm a semi truck driver here in the states and usually the first thing I check when my engine is sluggish 8 out of 10 times is going to be your fuel filter hopefully it's an easy fix
