Nigel Lived was a concept album by actor/singer Murrey Head. It was basically an imaginary diary tracing the tragic life of Nigel. Nigel lived in heyday 60's where the album follows his journey into London in search of work and hope. He meets and falls in love with Ruthie who dies of an overdose. This is one of the best albums in my vast collection and its a travesty that it barely made a mark when released. The story is spellbinding with the music adjusting with each track to move the listener in a most emotional way, the sentiment sucking the listener in. Nigel's life, his sad journey, was vividly on show for all to see. Think flower power, think squats, think poor and cold and lonely. Think Nigel. The album was presented in a fantastic gate fold cover with several pages of scribbled diary notes of a confused man living a confused life. The songs and these diary notes go hand in hand and create the illusion of reality. I would love to know if Murrey had based this album on a real being....it feels far to personal to be of mind only. Truly a fantastic album.
Discovering this album for the first time after reading Phil Browns book (Are we still rolling?) He described it as a high point in his recording career and includes some great details about the process.
