  • The Genesis G80 is a big luxury saloon that offers old school luxury compared to its German rivals but is it good enough to compete with its esteemed rivals?

I've owned the Electrified G80 model since July'22, apparently I was the first customer to take delivery outside Korea! I decided to make the switch to EV after owning g Maserati Ghibli Diesel for seven years and prior to that some twenty years of various Jaguar's. I have to say the Genesis is the best car I've owned! You highlight well a lot that I've noticed in the last twenty months, and with the EV drive train it takes the already good refinement to virtually Rolls Royce Phanton standards! This car excells at being g a true luxury car (albeit in EV form very fast - 0-60 in a little over 4 seconds), and like the other models they sell offers a unique experience that simply isn't there in the oh so boring German rivals. This is the car that most closely takes everything that used to make Jaguar's special and reinterpretes it in a thoroughly modern style.
My car is in Matira Blue, which is an unusual shade of green, with the Arctic white interior, and I've never owned a car which has attracted so much attention, with most confusing it for a Bentley - the ex head of Bentley design Luc Donkerwolke certainly had a few ideas in mind from his previous employer when he styled this car, and I honestly think the Genesis design language and as you say timeless styling works best on this model.
The car certainly feels large (the E G80 is actually slightly longer than the petrol car you were driving), and is ideally suited for long motorway journeys, where the semi autonomous tech (level 2.5) takes all the stress out of driving.
At around 80k in the spec that I have, it's still 10 grand less than its closest rival the Mercedes EQE, and if passers-by think its a Bentley, that's fine by me considering it cost half the price!
Finally I would make mention of the Genesis after sales package which is both FOC, and hands down the best of any premium brand I have experienced. You have mobile techs that can come to you, or they will take your car on a covered transporter and leave you with a courtesy car for any warranty work, or for any routine services, all as I say free of charge. More importantly the staff genuinely try and ensure a premium service- trying their best to accommodate the customer, something these days is certainly far from the case with rival brands. The whole impression is a company trying to give a 5 star service!
In case anyone is wondering, no I dont work for Genesis, but really do believe this is a brand that is trying to something different...

Hi Tish, great review on the G80 nice looking car, quite surprised the 2.5 litre engine is only a 4 cylinder , with an engine bigger than a 2.0 or 2.2 usually a straight 6 or V6 if it works and goes well must be good enough, this car has caught my eye , once again a great review on the Genisis G80, Take care👍

An interesting and informative review of a car completely unknown to me previously. As I was preparing to buy my current car (in 2009!), I read an article suggesting that the car market would morph into two predominant groups by 2035: cheap but decent cars like Kia and Hyundai that would be good enough to meet most customers' needs; and luxury cars like Mercedes and BMW. Middle market cars like Vauxhall-Opel, Renault, Peugeot and Fiat would be fighting for a very small part of the market and some might disappear. Fifteen years after it was published, we know that the article might have been a bit of an exaggeration but it seems like Hyundai / Genesis are addressing this concept from both ends of the market that the article predicted.
P.S. Tish, I liked the anecdote about moving your car remotely from your bedroom to stop blocking in your stepfather's car, when he needed to go out!

Genesis Motor is only available in 16 countries worldwide: including the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, China, South Korea and Australia.

    My comments:
    + excellent fit and finish
+ also design is very good (yes, old school jaguar is a good analogy)
+ there are some excellent gimmicks and functions
    - hyundai car power units are not known for reliability
    - sophistication of the ride (everything that is included in that, from ergonomic to suspension, dynamics, sound…) is not on pair with premium players. Its good, but not where it should be
Bottom line: it is as good as the price suggest. Nothing more, nothing less. Buy it based on the design then.

    • @AutoSocialUK
      @AutoSocialUK  Před 2 měsíci +2

Damn, I actually had a voiceover for the boot too but forgot to add it when editing!! Here is what I said ‘The G80 offers ample interior space, but falls short in terms of boot capacity. With a capacity of only 424 litres, the G80's boot is not impractical, but it lags behind competitors such as the Mercedes E-Class (540 litres) and BMW 5 Series (530 litres). Additionally, the boot opening of the G80 is a bit tight. It's worth noting that the rear seats of the G80 are fixed, limiting the ability to enhance storage space. However, the G80 does provide storage hooks for hanging items and a 12V socket for charging devices.’

Although Genesis is not known in Europe, G80 is a very popular model in Korea, with a total of 400,000 units sold in the five years since its launch, despite its quite expensive price. I don't know what the AS will be like in the UK, but the quality is already proven in Korea.

Audi, Merc, BMW….for all their faults, still are the go to for premium luxury vehicles.
What you get is a nationwide dealer network support.

So you decide to buy an EV because you believe it will help bring emissions down but in actual fact they go up - how can that be you might well ask - all of the marketing shows that a petrol car causes far more pollution doesn’t it? - well that’s true if you go from the time that the car leaves the forecourt for the first time - but it couldn’t be further from the truth if you consider the cars creation and what brought that car to the forecourt in the first place - the real truth is the stuff of an eco-warriors nightmare and the biggest culprit is simply mind-blowing - and that is global shipping - increasingly more and more EVs are being built in the far-east - the number of vehicles imported to the UK from China has doubled over the last three or four years - the amount of emissions produced by global shipping dwarfs other forms of transportation by a long long way - just ten supertankers alone produce more emissions than the UKs entire car fleet - we imported 100,000 cars from China alone last year and each super tanker carries 7500 cars on average so clearly that a significant problem - but that isn’t the only time that these supertankers are needed pre-sale - China imports 80% of the lithium it needs from Australia so the biggest cause of pollution in the transport industry is being used more and more but is not even considered as being a concern when it come to the powering of cars and the pollution caused by petrol engines - that is absurd to say the least - it is in fact disgraceful and I haven’t factored in the pollution caused by mining and refining the lithium, or that the cars are most likely going to be built in factories powered by coal - none of this pollution is factored in to the EV v Petrol debate - some people are getting very very rich and are laughing at us from their ivory towers
