    FreedomFox killer?!? Those are fighting words. Bring it! 955lbs with the standard wing is like a fat chick on high heels showing up to compete in a thin ice walking contest. Factory Rotax power and the STI wing for the win! 😝

      🤣 😀😀.... that fat chick lost a few pounds and with our VG setup we are but 1 knot faster on stall so it will be great to see if those extra HP can pull us through.
      Challenge accepted 🤪
      It should be interesting to finally put the question to rest - Factory Power vs Performance Engine...😁

    What can we boost our 914UL to chaps?
    We need 130bhp but only to climb up to 200ft towing a heavy 2 seat 800kg glider.
    Above the 500ft safe height 115bhp would be fine.
    I'm thinking:
    Tweak the existing turbo boost above 40mBar, with a boost controller.
    Fit an intercooler (even if it has to be fitted externally to the cowling)
    Most importantly we need a larger capacity oil cooler as the oil temp gets to top of the green 110C by the time we've climbed to 3000ft.

  • @gusbisbal9803
    @gusbisbal9803 Před 4 lety

    So two things to ask/discuss.
    1. engine power, the guys at Edge performance said to me that they would not recommend the big bore kits and the turbo. And you guys have gone for both AND a bigger turbo. So that puts a HUGE amount of stress on the crankshaft that was designed for the the 100HP 912. Yes they weld it into a single piece but that is still a modification not a performance made piece. And I am a fabricator by trade. Welding only gets you so far compared to solid machined metal. How did you cater for the crank?
    2. The prop. so more blades means more thrust by converting more energy into thrust per revolution. This favours high power engines with very high torque that can support the greater resistance of the greater amount of blades. Now the cruise speed compromise. At the tip of each blade you get the vortices that are generated with any wing. This is where most of the drag of a blade is generated. I am not sure about this but I believe that drag in cruise is greater under identical energy consumption. In other words for the same fuel burn you will cruise at lower speeds. However you just put in a little more power and you get more thrust and you get back some speed. In other words its not a reduction in cruise speed, its a reduction in cruise efficiency. Like your tires. You reduce cruise speed only if your not allowed to add more power. If you wanna go the TNIO550 in the front I can tell ya those tires are not going to slow you down. Can you find out from Airmaster if this is the case or am I just confused. Also Noise 4 blades reduce noise. Did you notice a reduction in noise.

    • @EdgePerformanceNorway
      @EdgePerformanceNorway Před 4 lety +2

      gus bisbal this engine started out as a 914 with 79.50mm bore and we converted it to ULS bore 84.00mm. So it’s a “big bore” 914, but it’s not our NA 88/92mm cylinders. We’ve stressed the cranks to well above 200hp, and broken a few, so we know where the limits are.

    • @gusbisbal9803
      @gusbisbal9803 Před 4 lety

      @@EdgePerformanceNorway Great! You know you need to put this out there on your site. There are a lot of shops that will not go to the extent that you have gone to. Some shops just install parts and don't test everything. I personally don't like to make anything that has not been fully tested because the moment I don't test, it is that element where I am found to be wrong. The more I find out about your work Thomas the more I realise that it is of a very high level of quality assurance.

    None of the high horse power mods will do diddly squat, for landing short! All that extra weight (my Kitfox 1, with a 65 HP Rotax 532, weighed 465 lbs., with about the same wing area this bird has) needs to be dissipated once on the ground, more inertia means longer LZ requirements, no matter the stall speed.
    I do like the nicely faired aft gear legs (covered AND faired, that's the correct way to do it), and just as dictated by Dan Denny way back when.
