      @mdw159 Před 7 lety +52

      easy question.... if you rotate the end of the spring while holding it stand still on the other end,,, spring will get shorter in length.. ;-)

    • @gw819
      @gw819 Před 7 lety +37

      In one direction, yes. In the other direction, the spring will get longer. This is not how it is being done. See the first reply. There is a partial spiral that engages the hammer at 1/2 turns.

    • @ericscherbarth1817
      @ericscherbarth1817 Před 7 lety +30

      The spring is not rigidly connected to any of the components, it only compresses to store energy and release to push the hammer. The movement of the hammer up and it's rotation back down is guided by a set of grooves between the hammer and transmission output.
      If you can get the impact mechanism out and compress the spring completely, it should be possible to dismantle the whole thing and see the grooves.

    Interesting; thanks for sharing this. I believe the air powered units have a different impact clutch mechanism than this - I would be interested to see how that one works. I've disassembled the air powered ones for cleaning and repairs, and there is no spring in them. I guess inertia plays a role in timing the impacts.

    Great show, thank you for troubling yourself with this. The cutaway was a fantastic idea together with the slow motion camera.
    Going back to my early College days, F=ma, Force equals mass times acceleration... So the mass of the "flywheel" remains constant, but the spring stored energy makes it possible to give it a good high acceleration as soon as it moves past the height of the blockage making it go from 0 m/s to some crazy high speed, thus hitting the next blockage with a high force.

      Learn proper English. It's 'lose'. Also I'm sure you're some kind of style master that attracts the opposite sex like mad, you keyboard expert, you.

      Actually, in proper English loose as a verb means to get rid of or set free. So, Based is right.
