Tokyo Hidden Spots: Exploring Tokyo’s Local Old Towns

  • In this Tokyo Hidden Spots episode, we explore the downtown (shitamachi) areas of Tokyo and try different types of Japanese street food!
Yanesen, located off the beaten tourist path east of Ueno Park in Taito and Bunkyo wards, is the collective name for the Yanaka, Nezu, and Sendagi neighborhoods after their first syllables.
Tokyo may have a very modern image to most but if you just go a little bit away from the popular tourist areas you will see a totally different side of Tokyo - a more local, quiet, traditional side.
I love exploring and seeing this side of Tokyo because you can see and learn much more than what's on the surface.
So, if you guys come to Tokyo or live here - try escaping the crowds and get lost in the local backstreets and see what interesting stuff pops up :)
A lot of Japan's traditional side is lost in Tokyo because of what is shown on the media but I hope this video shows you guys a different side of what Tokyo has to offer!!
    Places Visited
    - Yanaka Ginza 谷中銀座
    - Sendagi 千駄木
    - Nezu 根津
Hope to show you guys more of these hidden spots in Japan!
Join me on my journey! ☺

One tip. Go where you really want to go and plan it which will come first. 3 days in saporro and 4 days in tokyo.. oh and also we went to disney land for the whole day. It is also packed with people had to wait in line an hour for the rides and for the snacks Just so you know so really 3 days in tokyo. We want to go to places for pics in tokyo and didnt had that much time for shopping and are always in a hurry. Our mistake was not having a good plan by going from one side of yamanote line then going to the opposite of the circle of yamanote line. And all stores in harajuku closes at nine in the evening. Maybe our next trip to japan we will stick to tokyo for 7 days with a plan. I really didnt quite enjoy japan to the fullest for the first time but i still had a fun time. Cant wait to go back there

I will have to be there in autumn and in spring.

I love Yanaka Ginza too. Have been there many times. Did you know there was a ドラマ filmed there a few years ago? It was called "いつか陽のあたる場所で". Also, I agree about rabbits, they are the best pets! You should visit Okunoshima! I went there four years ago and loved all the bunnies.

I look forward to that video! In fact, I have a website and FB page called "You Should Visit Japan", and would be interested in collaborating with you during one of my future trips. Even if it's just helping with the camera work. :)

Once I come to japan, I will definitely visit your recommendation!

5:29 Here in Córdoba, Argentina, where I live, there are these trees everywhere! We call it Níspero. The botanical name is Eriobotrya japonica. I didn't know it! How interesting is that you live in Japan and the botanical name is Japonica! What a GREAT synchronicity!!! Namasté Guz

That's funny, in Brazil we call it nêspera, almost the same name! It's loquat in English. I had that tree in my backyard in Brazil, my parents have one in their new house... I miss that fruit, it's hard to come by here in Canada! Plus, it doesn't taste quite the same when you get it from the supermarket versus getting it straight from the tree.

And the Japanese name is biwa (yes, it is a homophone for the lake in Shiga Prefecture and the Japanese short neck fretted lute, but then there are a lot of homophones in Japanese). As mentioned above, the scientific name is Eriobotrya japonica although according to Wikipedia, it is native to south central China.
