      They're not 'evil' for seeing through humanity's bullshit. And according to the lore of the series, the Empire's society was based on Altmer traditions and customs. So really, the Altmer have spent the last 700 years or so watching Men bastardize their culture while constantly boasting about how great they are.

    • @MrBennyTheOwl
      @MrBennyTheOwl Před 7 lety +8

    • @TheBestestKitty
      @TheBestestKitty Před 7 lety +7

      And you think the Altmer aren't scapegoating humans?
      The elven religions are based around reaching divinity via the teachings of their favoured gods. For the Dunmer, this is the worship of Azura. For the Wood Elves they worship the forests and for the Altmer, they *used* to worship Auri-El, but lost the teachings of Auri-El somewhere in the past, which resulted in the current (as of Skyrim) Aldmeri Dominion. This is a result to them losing this means to reach divinity (which is mirrored directly from Nazism, wherein Nazi ideology stated that the germanic peoples were once gods, but due to *OTHER* races lost their godhood) and so they seek to literally destroy humanity in order to re-attain godhood by controlling the world, which is also a direct mirror to Nazi ideology. At this point, it has very little to do with the gods actually having real effect on the world as A: if they destroy the world they'll join with the gods and give the pantheon back a lot of their power, B: due to the Oblivion Crisis and Auri-El/Akatosh helping humanity for so damn long (since the Aelid rebellion leading to the first empire) they're probably feeling a bit salty about Akatosh on its own and C: they're also looking to get back at the creators of humanity, Shor/Ysmir/Lorkhan and Kyne/Kynareth/Kynarti for what they think, was stealing their divinity to make Nirn and humanity.
      All of these are direct parallels to Nazi ideology. I know it'll turn your stomach to read, but Mein Kampf is a fascinating look into the mind of a rational madman and his beliefs, and gives great insight into the ideology behind what he did.

    That's why I like the Elder Scrolls Lore, The history is very nuanced. There are some Nords that are racist but they have a bad history with elves, like the massacre at Saarthal. Argonians and Khajiit are seen as drug thieves which in some cases are true and it doesn't help I am a cutthroat Khajiit in my playthroughs. The Dark elves may get shit in Windhelm for the wrong reasons but in Morrowwind they are enslaving Argonians.
    Every race has some baggage on their head and I appreciate the lore team isn't making one out to be better than the others.

      Though personally I find High Elves to easily be the worst. Yes, Tiber Septim was wrong to attack the summerset isles, but then to use that as an excuse to attempt to wipe an entire race from existence is pretty sad. Then to go preaching about blasphemy and heresy while beliving that they have the basic *right* to godhood makes me think that all of their culture is based entirely around being better than everyone else.

    This gets down to the fundamental problem with elves as a concept in fiction. They are manifestly superior to humans in almost every way that matters, and hence pose something of a problem for writers in that they have to justify why elves don't either dominate humans entirely or preside over them as a ruleing class.
    In the original Tolkien conception of elves they seem superior to humans, but they don't see themselves as such and in fact regard humans as the mysterious and superior ones since humans can escape the world when they die and move on to a new existence, where as the elves are eternally trapped in this universe and can't ever venture beyond it. (They are simply reborn on another continent when they die)
    This is a factor that is extremely specific to Tolkiens own cosmology though and did not really translate to the other fictional work that borrowed his conception of fantasy elves hence generations of fictional elves who are better than humans full stop, and who are only kept from dominating the setting by human plot armor.

      In the old D&D games this was solved by making elves really slow learners...You generate a 1st level character and roll for their age, which ends up being somewhere in the 100 - 200 years old range. Whereas your average 1st level human character is only like 19 years old. Then they progress in levels at the same rate ... but Elves have a level cap and humans don't. So they begin learning skills really late in life, and never really get ultra-super powerful. Sucks to be you, elves!

    • @kibnob
      @kibnob Před 5 lety +96

      That's not really true in TES though. As mentioned in the video, they have longer lifespans and improved magical abilities (though generally lacking the power of Thu'um), and that's about it. Humans have faster growing populations and superior martial prowess. This aligns pretty well with the TES lore/history, in that elves had older, magic-focused civilizations that were more sophisticated due to accumulated knowledge over longer lives, whereas humans were still eventually able to conquer with pure military might, numbers, and in the case of the Nords, the voice. The question of the video is more whether elves are "better" in some subjective, cultural sense rather than being more overall more powerful or capable.

    • @Sanezilla
      @Sanezilla Před 5 lety +63

      You also forget that with superiority also comes wisdom (in the case of Tolkien) men breed fast and expand fast in that world. It is much better to have them as a semi-ally then conquer them.
      Not to mention it's just morally wrong, and being the more intelligent almost immortal race they are they probably as a whole favor doing the right thing.
      Elves also like the status quo and dont really wanna fuck shit up as they are tied to the magic in the world (a whole other discussion as this is actually a huge weakness) whereas men are not.
      Also dont forget that the creator and God in Tolkens universe SAYS HIMSELF THAT MEN ARE HIS FAVORITE CREATION. Not exactly the best idea to enslave gods favorite pet project lol.

    I always thought that the reason the Thalmor outlawed Talos worship was to spur on the rebellion. The Thalmor occupied the Imperial City for two years before being driven out. Since neither the Thalmor or Imperials were able to beat each other in the Great war, they had to come up with a treaty for the time being.
    Ulfric was an Imperial soldier that had been captured during the Great War and had been interrogated by Elenwen. He "escaped" later returning home. The Thalmor would know a lot about him, including his feelings toward Talos. During that time the Forsworn had taken over Markarth and was trying to become a recognized kingdom in the eyes of the rest of the world. After the Great War had ended and the treaty signed, the Empire wanted the Reach back, creating a militia lead by Ulfric in order to push them out. After overthrowing Madanach, Ulfric demanded to allow Talos worship within Markarth before he ceded control of the city. The Empire said sure, but the Thalmor (knowing Ulfric's beliefs) insisted on rigid adherence to the treaty. This pissed Ulfric off and was a key moment in starting the rebellion.
    When you are in the Thalmor base and read Ulfric's dossier - he is listed as a "dormant asset" that they no longer have direct contact with. Implying that he was once and asset and that they did have direct contact with him. This also implies his escape from the Thalmor wasn't actually an escape in the first place, meaning they either let him escape or simply freed him. The Markarth incident is what made him too angry to talk to the Thalmor anymore, and spurring the rebellion.
    What I thought was that during the war the Thalmor realized that Ulfric could be a useful tool to them. His zealous belief in Talos could potentially be used against him. I imagine Elenwen would have insisted on the White-Gold Concordat being upheld in Markarth simply to anger Ulfric.
    But why do this? Why start a rebellion in Skyrim in the first place? One, the Thalmor are not strong enough to defeat the Empire outright, and need to break off pieces so that it's more conquerable. Two, should Skyrim leave the Empire they lose access to Skyrim's warriors, lumber, and silver. Three, this would also deplete some of the Empire's resources in a needless fight. Four, should Skyrim leave, that means the Empire must pull out of Skyrim too.
    They will also want the Thalmor to leave, but here's the thing. They won't. I figured that the Thalmor's plan was that after Skyrim - in a now weakened state after just fighting a war and no longer having the support of the Empire - will be easy pickings for the Thalmor to conquer. Also, Skyrim not being in the Empire anymore means that the White-Gold Concordat doesn't apply to them. If Skyrim's on it's own, there is no treaty protecting them from a full Thalmor assault. And the Thalmor can do it legally without violating the terms of the treaty. Then the Thalmor can take their resources for themselves.
    But another BIG point that nobody seems to think about is the fact that Skyrim is Cyrodil's northern border. The Imperial city is almost straight south from Helgen, over the mountains. This also means that the Empire actually couldn't defend Skyrim because that would mean violating the treaty and potentially starting another war they aren't prepared to fight. This literally puts the Empire in a position that they cannot defend their northern border from being taken over. This would put the Thalmor at a huge strategic advantage, because they will have free access to points very close to the heart of the Empire, while the Empire won't be anywhere near Summerset Isle. I always thought that the move to ban Talos worship was purely a strategic one - not a moral one.

    • @emdotambient
      @emdotambient Před 6 lety +113

      Well reasoned, and this is why I back the Empire. The Empire is temporarily appeasing the Thalmor for strictly political/military reasons, not because they condone the Thalmor. Whereas the Rebellion are inadvertently playing into the hands of the Thalmor. Ulfric and his lot are too short sighted to realize that even if they win the rebellion against the Empire, they're doomed. They're not only a bunch of nationalist, racist bastards, they're dumb as well. Good riddance the Rebellion. Would be cool if TES VI comes with this exact history included. The rebellion wins, and then the Thalmor kick their arses.

      Dianna Bowen this has been the most helpfull answer, honestly.. but still why do you think that the thalmor also stated that a stormcloak victory should be avoided? do you think that if skyrim and empire are seperated that would double the forces against the thalmor? even of skyrim has withdrawn from the empire the hate for the thalmor is just as same, and all the more reason for the nords to conduct their own skirmishes against the thalmor since theres no treaty to stop them? now the thalmor would have the nords to deal with while semi-expecting plots from the empire itself? if skyrim becomes independant could the empire secretly and indirectly aid the nords in their skirmishes just to preoccupy the thalmor and launch their own from beneath the thalmors nose then finally regain allaince with skyrim with the abolishing the ban of the worship of talos now that the empire has regained higher ground? ☺

    When it all comes down to the events of the Dawn Era, elves and men have always been predestined to war. There is a huge conflict of religion that goes far beyond just Talos. Ever heard of Shor, the Nordic God of the Underworld, also known as Shezzar, the Missing God to the Imperials? Well, the Elves know him as Lorkhan. Lorkhan the Betrayer. See, the elves are decendants of the Old Elnofey, who themselves are decended from the Divines themselves. Also, the Divines used to be as powerful as the Daedra. When Lorkhan created the mortal plane of Mundus, he enlisted the help of the Aedra and many other divine beings to do so. Magnus and his followers fled creation upon realizing they were losing their power as a result of the creation of Mundus, and those who stayed, that is, the eight Aedra and countless Elnofey, lost their divinity and became mortal. After a few generations, they became the Elves, while other lesser Elnofey became the lesser creatures and other forces of nature. This was an act of total betrayal to the elves, because it is due to Lorkhan's actions that they ever die at all.
    On the other hand, when Lorkhan was creating the mortal plane of Mundus, he also used his power and Kyne's to create a new race to inhabit the mortal plane; the race of men. While elves believe that Lorkhan is a god to be reviled, men believe Lorkhan, or Shor, to be their chief deity as they owe their existance to him, and they also believe that Lorkhan did not trick the Aedra, but that they in fact gave up their divinity willingly so that they could exist. You can already begin to see the potential religious disagreements.
    Talos really just adds insult to injury, and it all goes back to Lorkhan/Shor. While everything in this video is true, and it alone would be reason enough for the elves to be frustrated, there is also one other aspect of Talos to consider. You see, most people aren't quite informed about Talos, and the life of Tiber Septim. Talos the God is actually not Tiber Septim, but rather the combined souls of three different Shezarrines, including Tiber Septim, Zurin Arctus, and Ysmir Wulfharth. When Tiber died, he did not immediately rise to divinity. We know this because Talos was not a god in Daggerfall or Arena. See, way back in the Mythic Era, long before Tiber was even born, Ysmir Wulfharth was the first Shezarrine, or Aspect of Shor. He borrowed power from Shor himself to defeat House Dagoth at the Battle of Red Mountain, but Dagoth Ur struck him with Sunder, one of Kagrenac's instruments of Tonal Architecture, capable of rewriting the laws of the world. As a result, Wulfharth had his powers sundered from him and he became an undead being. He would from now on be known as the Underking, an immortal decaying zombie that would turn to ash upon being killed, but then reform. Much, much later, he met Tiber Septim as he was forming his Third Empire. Zurin Arctus was his battlemage, and also a Shezzarine. Arctus was among the best mages to ever live, and Tiber consulted him for divinations and artifacts of power to use in his conquest. When they aquired the Numidium from Vivec, Vivec did not give them the means to power it; the Heart of Lorkhan. Instead, Zurin Arctus would have to create a new way to power the Numidium. The result of this is steeped in controversey and contradiction. Some claim that Zurin Arctus and Ysmir Wulfharth gave up their souls for the creation of the power source willingly, while others claim Tiber Septim in fact took them by force, or even gave up his own heart, but the result was the creation of the Mantella, a powerful soul gem containing the souls of Arctus and Wulfharth. By using the souls of two Aspects of Lorkhan, Tiber found his substitute for the Heart of Lorkhan. Considering how Daggerfall ultimately ends, it looks likely that Tiber Septim did in fact engage in some devious actions to power the Numidium. Later, when he died, he did not rise to divinity.
    Here is how Talos actually became a God. In the events of Daggerfall, you are asked to retrieve the Mantella and either give it to one of the kingdoms so that they can conquor the Iliac Bay with it, give it to the Empire so that they can do the same, give it to Mannimarco, or give it to the Underking. See, when the Underking had his soul extracted to fuel the Mantella, he did not actually die, as the very concept of death no longer applied to him after Dagoth Ur struck him with Sunder in Red Mountain. In order to die, the Underking would have to destroy the Mantella. He wanted this to happen as he could no longer bear living as an undead creature. This happens no matter what ending you chose in Daggerfall. The reason why is because of the nature of the Numidium and the Mantella itself. They use Tonal Architecture on a level which Kagrenac and the Dwemer as a whole were not even prepared for, and so every time someone activates the Numidium, what is known as a Dragon Break occurs. During a Dragon Break, very strange things happen to time and to the laws of Mundus itself. The first time the Numidium was activated, the resulting Dragon Break caused the uncertainty of the events of the Battle of Red Mountain as far as what happened to Nerevar is concered as well as the Dissapearance of the Dwemer. When Tiber activated it, it caused the uncertainty of what happened to Wulfharth that we just talked about. It also caused the time during which Tiber conqured Alinor to be lost to history, which is why there are no clear accounts of what happened as opposed to the other provinces. This time, when the Mantella was used either to activate the Numidium, ascend Mannimarco to godhood, or for the Underking to find the peace of death, a new Dragon Break known as the Warp in the West occured. Again, it caused the events of what occured during this time to be lost to the memory of everyone in Mundus. What we know is that at the end of the Warp in the West, the dozens of kingdoms of High Rock became three, High Rock fell back under the control of the Empire, Mannimarco ascended and became the Shade of the Revenant, the Numidium was destroyed along with the Mantella, and the Hero of Daggerfall and the Underking died.
    How does this all tie in? With the destruction of the Mantella and the death of the Underking, the other two Shezarrines could finally have their souls ascend. Also, because of the strange effects of the Dragon Break on time, their souls were sent back in time to the moment of Tiber Septim's death. The result is that all three Shezarrines combined their souls and ascended as Talos, the Ninth Divine, and because of the Dragon Break, it is as if Talos has always existed since the death of Tiber Septim.
    Now if you are still with me, you now know that the Elves hate Lorkhan because Lorkhan caused them to lose their divinity, you know that Tiber Septim wasn't quite as morally upstanding as the Empire or even the Nords would have you believe, and you know that the existance of Talos is a result of the combined souls of three Shezarrines, or aspects of Lorkhan, rising to divinity to replace the Missing God. Talos isn't just the god that was once a man (or men in truth), it isn't just that these men brought about their humiliation in Tiber Septim's conquests, but it is also that these men that ascended are literally all avatars of the one divine being that the Elves hate even more than the Daedra. All of this, along with the collapse of the Altmer government during the Oblivion Crisis that left a massive power void in Alinor, pushed Altmer society over the edge and created the Thalmor.

    This inspires me to try out an RP character based on the fact that as a child he witnessed this attack by Tibus and grew to despise man. Everything you knew has been destroyed. you wander the land searching for a new start. For years you are a vagrant, for intensive purposes, you become a bandit. You one day come to the Skyrim boarders where the Imperials do not recognise you as a high elf because you simply do not look like it, how you are dressed, the dirt, the clothing. They think you are some spy for the Stormcloaks and so capture you along with the Stormcloaks. that's how you end up on the cart. you still harbour a deep hatred for man and anyone who worships Tibus. You lie through your teeth and fake being nice to get by but you wish you could roast hem where they stood. At times you do lose it and kill them. it's in one of these times where you lose it after hearing one too many praises of Tibus and talking down of your people that you discover you are Dragonborn, that you can shout as the dragons do. would be very interesting to see how you navigate the game like this. your character may change his views in the future from kindness from man but it would be gradual and you would deny it greatly. obvs this would be very much an RP character.

    Elves believe themselves to be the direct descendants of the aedra, and because lorkhan tricked them into creating mundas they came to despise him. Lorkhan himself is believed to have created men, so the elves hate men because they are the, "embodiment?", perhaps creation will suffice here, of lorkhan.

      Well kind of. Ages ago after Lorkhan was punished the remaining Et'Ada who participated in creation either became one of the Adra or became one of the Ehlnofey. The Ehlnofey fell to Nirn in two groups: a dense group who banded together and tried to preserve Et'Ada society on Nirn (the Old Ehlnofey) and a scattered group that found there way after wandering Nirn for ages to the Old Ehlnofey. Instead of being welcomed with open arms they where shunned. Due to unknown events a war started between the less numerous Old Ehlnofey and the more numerous Wandering Ehlnofey. This war sunk a great deal of land under the sea leaving us with the Nirn we have today (Tamriel, Akavir, Yokuda Pyandonea, Aldimeris, and Atmora). The Old Ehlnofey became the elves and the beast folk and the Wandering Ehlnofey became men and where scattered from Atmora to Yokuda to Tamriel.
      Assuming all tis is true than literally every sentient being in Nirn is a descendant of Padomey and Anu, Anui'el and Sithis, Auri'el (Akatosh) and Lorkhan.

      If we also assume that race breeding is the same as our own world (given high elves selectively breed for superior traits) then the men races have an evolutionary superiority. Creatures that have shorter lifespans are much more likely to sire children quicker in there lives over a creature that will live for a longer lifespan. Because of the the short lifespan, to ensure the species existence, they will constantly have children to spread their genes, and their children will do the same. This cycles through generations at a faster rate, and it has been proven in the real world, humans will adapt and evolve based on their location to survive the new areas. A pure white family that never had any other race than lets say canadian, if they moved to africa, and their family settled there indefinatly, eventually their children will become naturally black, having developed an increasing amount of melanin to protect against the sun.
      While i can't confirm how high elves fuck, it can be safe to assume that will a 1000 year life span, having 20 babies isn't a high priority until exceedingly late into their lives. Elves while genetically superior in terms of abilities and lifespan, would not be able to adapt anywhere near as quick as the men race, whether it be from climate change, or disease epidemics. The very same trait that extends their life (magic) is the same anchor that ties them down and could very well crutch their evolution, having a dependency of it

    I have a theory but it's based on ESO events...sort of. I know ESO isn't popular around here, but the AD main questline opened my eyes to a few things. SPOILERS: in the questline, you run into a group called the Veiled Heritance. The VH is an Altmer supremacy group (very Nazi-like) that is partially supported by the Maomer. Anyway, at one point in the questline, you find that the VH begin to infiltrate the Thalmor. 2E Thalmor are nothing like 4E Thalmor. Rather, 4E Thalmor are VERY MUCH like the VH. It is my theory that after Tiber Septim decimated Summerset and after Crystal-Like-Law fell in the events of Oblivion, a resurgent VH infiltrated the Thalmor and staged a coup of the AD. It makes perfect lore sense (since the VH were not completely wiped out in ESO) and explains the 4E Thalmor mentality. Anyway, it's my theory, nothing more.

      Actually, the lore (as far as I've been able to find, at the very least) is very much unknown on Argonians in the Dawn Era; What we do know is that by the time the Aldmer arrived and began exploring Tamriel in the Merethic Era, the Argonians were not only already there, but also that they had a tribal (preliterate) culture, which would imply that they had reached sapience in Tamriel rather than having traveled there from another location. Likewise, while they have a strong connection with the Hist trees, there is nothing in the lore (that I have been able to find, anyway) that states the Hist created them. I agree. The idea does not sense, but it is fairly common fantasy make-believe theology. It seems more the result of trying to make human beings more significant than they are in relation to the divine. I would not go to the Elder Scrolls for solid philosophical theology. However, increased worship could give more strength to the political cult of a God.

      I think it is true that the divine strength coming from worship received is true for Elder Scrolls but is nonsense in its own right, which is fine.

      And they still got skinned at the Battle of the Red Ring once the Empire recovered from the initial shock. Magic and good quality weapons alone evidently aren't enough to overcome the Imperial military's discipline, numbers and talent for strategy. The Empire is not going to be caught unawares next time, and the Thalmor lose in the long run if either faction in Skyrim wins the civil war quickly (as they explicitly say in the letter in the Thalmor Embassy about Ulfric). Miraak shows that the thu'um has far more potential than we realize, using a seven-word shout "[dragon name, three words of power], zii los di du," that can steal a dragon's soul without lifting a finger. What of the Last Dragonborn? What kind of abominable shouts could they come up with to fight the Dominion? Perhaps an even more potent form of Durnehviir's soul tear that works on AoE? Perhaps a shout that calls the ghosts of not just one, but many ancient heroes, to battle alongside them? A shout that combines Storm Call, Frost Breath and Cyclone, creating a much larger tornado, hail, and lightning? • @MetalHanyou1
    @MetalHanyou1 Před 7 lety +80

    I heard another, completely different theory, in which I suspect the Thalmor want to destroy the world by prohibiting the worship of Talos.
    This theory basically suggests that the elves view themselves as the mortal descendents of the Aedra, and indeed many races of Mer had more contact with Aedric beings than any race of Man. You see, the theory is that Talos isn't just up and worshipped, but that he basically became Lorkhan, the creator of Nirn, but most importantly, the bane of their existence. The elves blame Lorkhan for their limitations, believing he forever broke their connection to the spirit plane -- and the elves believe they can only return by destroying Nirn. If this is all true, then Talos not only represents Tiber Septim, who conquered the elves, but also Lorkhan, who denied them what they thought was their superior existence. It doesn't help that Lorkhan supposedly despised elves and was seen as a hero among men.
    As such, if they can prevent the worship of Talos, they might weaken his power and make the world easier to annihilate. It's also suggested that there are seven towers that hold Mundus out of Oblivion -- the two that come to mind being the White Gold Tower and the Throat of the World. At least two of these towers must be standing in order to keep Nirn from falling into Oblivion. So far, the White Gold Tower is one, and the Throat of the World is another. I believe the Heart of Lorkhan was another. If the elves can destroy most of these towers, they can destroy the world and send it into Oblivion.
    Consider that, during the Winterhold questline in Skyrim, we see a situation where Ancano - a Thalmor mage - starts drawing power from the Eye of Magnus, and the implications seem to be that what he was doing would have, in time, destroyed the world. It's quick to assume this was a reckless grab for power, but it seemed that he could only benefit from the eye's power while channeling it directly. So, what, was he going to stay in that chamber forever? No, it seems more likely he had a goal, a motive. It's possible that Ancano had a means to speed up the process that was taking his bretheren centuries to achieve, and that his goal was to destroy Nirn. This makes more sense when you consider one theory was that the Eye of Magnus contained Mundus itself.
    Of course, that's just one of many theories.

      also to point out. every province of Tamriel has a tower and a stone(much like the sigil stones found in Oblivion). It's also my understanding that all towers must be destroyed in order to break the mortal realm. I can't remember them all of the top of my head but.
      province -------tower/stone
      Morrowing = red mountain/Heart of Lorkhan (destroyed)
      Cyrodiil = White gold tower/Amulet of Kings (destroyed)
      Skyrim = Throat of the world/? (if Alduin is the stone then destroyed)
      Valenwoord = Falinesti/? (giant tree)
      Summerset = Crytal Tower/? (maybe destroyed during Oblivion crisis)
      High Rock = Adamantine Tower/Zero Stone (?)
      Hammerfell = ?/?
      Elswyr ?
      BlackMarch = Hist?

      Tiber Septim was an important man in history. Just like all the great, he had his sins and virtuous accomplishments, both of which were far greater than those of any other person in his time.
      You can respect Tiber Septim as the great unifier of Tamriel while also despising what he did to Barenziah. Numidium was the best way to achieve his goals quickly.

    say what you will but they lost to the redguards for southern hammerfell

      The Aldmeri Dominion didn't lose to the Redguards for Southern Hammerfell. A small fraction of the heavily weakened Aldmeri Dominion lost to the Redguards for Southern Hammerfell after underestimating the Redguards, and they *still* managed to devastate the entire region in the fighting. What would happen if it was the entire Aldmeri Dominion at full strength falling upon Hammerfell without underestimating their foe like last time?

      And they stood alone for five years! The stormcloaks have every right to be enraged about the dishonorable surrender. However, that does not justify their assistance in destruction of the great empire, in my opinion. My loyalties will always lie with talos, and his empire.
