"The American Dream & Other Fairy Tales": Disney Heiress Tackles Inequality and Family Legacy

  • Half of full-time workers in the United States cannot make ends meet. Thousands of them work for the Walt Disney Company. One of them reached out to the dissident heiress Abigail Disney, whose grandfather Roy Disney built what is often called the "happiest place on Earth." Now she's made a documentary about how the family business exploits its workers: "The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales." The film follows workers who have difficulty making ends meet despite the lofty claims of the Disney conglomerate. "This is a phenomenon that's happening across this country in corporations and even around the world," says Disney, who co-directed the film with Kathleen Hughes. Employees who agreed to be filmed "had a hope that if they could change Disney from within, Disney could lead the way for other corporations," notes Hughes.

It's not just the Disney company doing this, but pointing out the mistreatment of their employees is a great start. Someone needs to do the same thing with Walmart and Amazon next!

      I see how the American culture has taken in Disney so robustly! All the fantasies and dreams that target all children. I can honestly i can say my culture, native americans has never taken anything Hollywood or Disney used or misused, misappropriated or otherwise. Native American children know the reality of life and know these fantasies are not them nor represent them in any way. There's no white knight on a white horse coming to save you and there's no white picket fence around their home. Unfortunately they grow up with reality smack dab in their faces. My point is not all children believe in Disney's fake world nor that in santa Claus. It's not a world we want to belong to. For the main stream, It's always been about money! Always will be. Ppl have been fighting for homeless ppl since 1990 when a ton of researchers began publishing books about it. Nobody cared. What do you think is going to be done for Disney.
      Orlando is worth a zillion times more than when Disney first opened their gates. May be it's not generating the money for the area that some other industries could be. Idk.
      I do know that there is a huge transportation problem for workers. Buses go directly to Disney but only at special times. Meanwhile, ppl work all different hours. It's a big park. Employees have to be dropped off at one place then can't get to where they need to be on time and get fired. FOOD prep, maint, clean up ppl, don't all work when buses run and don't make enough money to buy cars. The main problem w American workers is that the jobs in America now that require few skills are held by middle age and older workers though they were intended for teenager and disabled workers, ppl who not only don't support families but have other ppl (parents or children) supporting them. This is why ppl in other countries manage and can have the necessities while Americans are falling into extreme poverty and homelessness.

    A brilliant, courageous and important story. Thank you Amy. My ear caught the clip of the word "Socialism" once again being used as a defamatory remark, to silence and shame the speaker. What they are really trying to say (without saying it openly) is, "...you are a communist and un-American!". And then, the discussion is instantly diverted to another area, where the speaker is compelled to defend against the outrageous lie and the debate is brought down to the personal level, and away from the original point. The idea that earning a living wage, having Health Coverage, being able to afford a home, rear your children in a healthy environment, and have some security in one's old age is "un-American" and a "bad" thing, is the height of absurdity.
    Today it makes no difference if we are speaking of Disney, Starbucks, Walmart or any other corporate beast. They all have the same 19th century mentality. "Make the worker work for me, and to hell with the needs of the worker. Their only purpose in life is to make me money. They should be grateful I gave them a job at all!"
    This is a very important issue and much too big to be dealt with here in the comment section. The entire mindset of America and what it means in the 21st Century , must change. Thank you Amy!

    Her grandfather, and his good friends Art Babbit and Don Bluth, were not just amazing artists and storytellers, but also visionaries. A far cry from what Disney are today. Even their animation department, barring the odd outlyer such as Princess & The Frog and Moana, is so lacking they were forced to buy Pixar out, as Pixar were beating them soundly on every level. The "money men" are now in charge, not the creative people, which is why Don quit to go on his own and the subsequent talent drain of Disney workers loyal to Don and Walt leaving with him, led to the first Disney Slump, in the late 70's and throughout the 80's.

      @TheVanillatech Před rokem

      @@madeleineswords704 The thing I see with Pixar is thusly. They were born of a technological point of view. I don't know how old you are, but I remember Toy Story coming out in 1995 just when I was 14-15 years old, and I had no interest in animations anymore, was chasing girls and video games. That is relevant, as video games is where 50% of the geeks at Pixar cut their teeth. That "scene" of hardware, emergent exponential hardware, pushed the limits of what Pixar was doing.
      The Geforce 3 series graphics cards, for PC gamers, could do the Pixar intro in real time pretty much flawlessly. And back then, despite Toy Story being a revalation in digital animation story telling entertainment, it was all about the visuals. Pixar broke the boundary of digital and traditional, but they did it because they had class, they didn't just have the technical prowess, they had the writers and storytellers to craft it.
      Look at what they have done since. Almost every single release a masterpiece. From Wall-E to A GooD Dinosaur, and with Toy Story 2 being a contender of the best animation of ALL TIME, absolute legends. My own children are forever blessed to have been brought up with stories like these. As are we all.
      So your fear is the corporate money men ruling the world and Disney will destroy Pixar. They CANT do that. Because it's intrinsic to the human instinct to tell stories. As the Croods showed us, back in the day, the entertainment was Dad or Mum or a random elder sitting at the campfire telling a tale. The Brothers Grimm knew this, hence the existance of 50% of Disneys stock. It's a human thing, bred from a million years of evolution. And Pixar were the right time, the right PEOPLE, the right idea. Disney had no option but to buy them, because they were destroying the IMAGE of Disney. Bear in mind, by then, Disney was already arrived. Animations were no longer important, but more of a brand security tag.
      As an illustrator myself, I grew up dreaming of working for Disney. But in reality, I'd have been another cog in a corporate wheel, despite my talents. The commercialization of entertainment, taking it away from the creatives and putting it in the hands of finance people, will have it's own backfire. People are people. Always were, always will be. Pixar are being kept as pure as possible because they earn money. If they didn't, and their productions went sterile and "non - profitable", believe me the people would seek out alternatives, because it's in our DNA.

      @@rrickarr understanding how money works has nothing to do with the systematic deconstruction of what little social safety net that we had, and the corporate or fiduciary duty that companies used to feel towards their employees. The employee used to prosper with companies, as the companies prospered. Tax rates were well established to ensure that the richest people paid the most, and these dollars were aptly redirected to bettering the infrastructure as well as the social infrastructure of the country. All of this changed with Reagan. Money has been systematically funneled from the lower and middle classes to the top, with no regard for the increased productivity that all companies have seen in the past decades. We now have people like you, who put the onus on the employee to take responsibility for the employer exploiting his labor for slave wages, instead of requiring the employer to be ethically focused and pay the workforce adequately. Just as we've seen how the privatization of healthcare has resulted in ever worsening outcomes for people in this country, the dehumanization of people and the commodification of employees has resulted in lower and lower wages, and steepening income inequality.

If someone has nothing other then a high school education they are going to be relegated to minimum wage jobs with no where to go. I knew I wasn't going to college when I was in junior high, I was bored to death at school and hated every minute of it so I knew I would have to figure things out on my own to have the wealth I desired. I took the California high school proficiency exam and quit high school when I was 15 years old. The public school system is torture for extremely intelligent people who cannot conform to their norms for learning. I knew from that point forward I would have to do everything on my own to secure my future. I am also handicapped and have been since the age of 13 when I was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma in my left leg and limb salvage surgery left me in extreme chronic pain. I had very good understanding of computers and networking which was all self taught so I started doing mobile computer repair and got a service call from a real estate appraisal office. When repairing their computers I saw what is involved with appraisal and the money that could be made and the very next day I enrolled in the only course for appraisal and I scheduled and passed the state exam and began doing appraisal. I would drop off appraisals at real estate offices and talk to agents and loan officers and soon after that I went and got my real estate license. It was just so easy to make money with everything I did so I moved into real estate investment and development and immediately excelled. I did that for a few years and opened a classic car and high end car dealership followed by building a state of the art comprehensive collision center certified to repair almost every make and model. I am semi retired at 40 years old but I enjoy making money and it is just so easy. I have had so many different careers it would days to write about them all.
