"I don't want to know the history of this knob." Victor, you literally had me laugh out loud!!!😂🤣😅
It honestly looks like a mouse or rat gnawed on it. That's exactly what looks what happened. 😅
This reel has a new lease on life!
It needs to be thrown in the lake Lmmfao
The Legendary Reel is back in action! Wonderful job restoring and cleaning it up for Alex.
There is something to be said about rebuilding something rather than just scrapping it. This is what we all did before the drop in prices (due to offshore, mass production manufacturing) made it "uneconomical". And there is a satisfaction in rebuilding it and putting it back into service. Thanks for showing this Victor!!
well said sir... people who have done it know the satisfaction.
Who is Realistic Fishing? Teasing! Have been watching that reel for years. Alex does not abuse his reels but definitely fishes the Bananas out of his equipment! And if you can think of what a reel could go through that one has. Thanks for hooking him up! Can’t wait to see him use it again!
yup! You said it well
A rat or mouse smelled the fish attractant that had rubbed off onto those knobs and went to town. That was a good video, thanks!
unlikely, if i have to bet. Probably melted with time and he was removing the soft parts
Your review of the reel's interior is inspiring me to purchase an Ozark Trail casting combo. Thanks Victor!
so many bearings! No bushings anywhere! And great gears!
My dad dropped his rod and swedish made ambassadeur rocket down in the sand bottom in a lake. I managed to fish the rod and reel out with a bunch of trebble hooks and lead weights and there was som sand inside. There aren't many parts on that reel so i just took it apart and did some cleaning and the reel has been in perfect condition since
Satisfaction
I’ve said before that I’m not really into the whole tech thing with rods and reels. Finally broke down and watched your the 2023 DAIWA legalis LT found it interesting and entertaining. Now of course I’ve seen Alex fish with that combo forever. Also have read to BS Ccomments from the so called “pros” about what a crappy reel it is. Now to see you rebuild that real was great. You summed it up very well at the end. You got to scratch your itch and review it, Alex still has his beloved “cheap” reel, we fans get a fun video to watch. As fans of both you and Alex, when you said we all win, I couldn’t agree more. Might be one of my favorite videos of yours yet. Sorry so long but this video was so cool. Thanks Victor.
thank you mr. Bill, i appreciate that!
Keep it Realistic Bill! 👊
Victor, you are the true Jedi master of fishing reels!!!
😇
Looks like a well built reel. After your cleaning , bearings and general maintenance it should serve Alex well.
Honestly, i didn't find ONE thing to criticize on this reel! Maybe the plastic drag discs... but it had bearings all around, and really good set of gears!
I enjoyed this video. Super impressive outcome as well! That reel spins like a champ too. Wow. Good job Victor.
thank you sir!
👍
Such a wonderful job fixing Alex's reel!! I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video!!!
thank you. Next one coming up this Tuesday
@@ifishcatfish most welcome and looking forward to watching it!! I'm subscribed and have on my notifications 😊
That was interesting to watch. I'm looking forward to seeing what you show with the new Legalis LT.
interesting findings, let me tell u
That thing is well made for no more than it cost. @@ifishcatfish
@@greenpea9412 thats right.
Always wondered what those ozark trail reels looked like inside. Thanks
This was incredible. Can't wait to see Alex put it back to work!
this video was great! inspiring as hell and relaxing on a friday night wind down.
beautiful work and upgrades
Thank you! Cheers!
Wonderful work! Can't wait to see u guys on another vid together!
I appreciate that!
This was awesome, nice work!!
i appreciate that!
great video thanks for sharing . fun to watch.
This is without a doubt one of the most informative and enjoyable videos ever produced. I'm new to your channel but will become a new subscriber. Fantastic video.
welcome aboard, sir. Hope to see u around : )
I really enjoyed watching this and seeing you break it down and talk about it, I'm actually pretty impressed with the quality with it's price range and may have to pick up one for myself to take to small rivers and creeks I fish from time to time... thanks for sharing the process and solid info along the way!
thank you sir!
Off topic, but i recently received my first bg-1 order and they look fantastic! I got them so fast in the mail, thank you Victor.
appreciate u dropping a comment buddy!
Nice job 🎣🎣
Great video Victor. About that reel handle knob, we call that: when the fish aren't bitting, you bite your reel knob! 😂
that makes sense! 😁😂
😅
Great job, and a nice reel. Thanks.
Thank you sir!
I'm waiting for the restoration of that old Shimano curado bantam. Looks exciting. I have so many high-end gears but loves these lower-end gear restoration clips. Just something more special sbout them. Maybe a bunch of lower/mid-end Shimano/daiwa gear upgrades.
That one will be special. I will put extra effort in it. Maybe next weekend. Im done with the spinning as well
I loved the video and I've learned a lot. It was very informative. I'm gonna subscribe. I wanted to see what you did to Alex's reels and I a whole lot more. I haven't checked all your videos ,but I have quite a bit of reels. None are super expensive by any means. I do have about 10 vintage Mitchell and Shakespeare reels. I hope you may a couple of videos about old reels. Anyway this video was quite enjoyable.
Thank you
it was a pleasure. Im editing the video of the next reel right now and will publish Tuesday
Good video and keep them coming.
Thanks for the paypal mr gary! Got it while fishing!
Hello Victor, very good work and an entertaining but also educational video. It's hard to believe the quality of the gearing on this $20(?) reel. And the final running test...just listen and enjoy :-) greetings from Germany
I really appreciate the comments from germany! Imprccable english!
Great video, Victor. I'd bet that the chewed up knobs are from Alex using the Procure attractant. It gets on the knobs and if there are rodents where he keeps his gear (other than his car) then they are probably chewing on the knobs.
sometimes the rubber gets soft, like melting. I have had that happen on very old reels. Then maybe he removes the melted parts with his nails. I don't see any sign of rodent anywhere on the frame..
I kept my baitcasting rod in the car during the summer. In order for it to fit in the car, I had to put the reel/handle end under the rear window and run the rod over the passenger seat and put the rod tip under the sun visor. I wrapped a microfiber cloth around the reel and secured it with a hair band. It got full sun the whole season and did not suffer any ill effects. It was an older Abu Garcia Pro Max.
@@stevegraffmusic thats not it though. I have a tica reel to sell you if u want to see what i mean. Years ago they made knobs from some rubber that would melt from some conditions. Not from heat. My tica has never seen heat but knob melted and had to replace it. Just loke touching two lures can cause them to melt without heat
Tbh I switch from abu to kast king becuase of the cost of repairs and maintenance. I buy the kast king Spartacus 2 that I buy for 40$ and it preforms as my tuned abu Alf reels and I can replace it for the cost of cleaning
not a big difference in quality anyway
Being “critical”, I would lose the regular qtips and get the esr (electro static) qtips which will not leave behind microscopic fibers during cleaning. This is what I use when cleaning cpus and other critical “ha”
Items
I think its reasonable, to be honest. I like the cheapest one cos i can use a lot and not feel guilty. I use them to clean the guides on mynrods all the time
Very good job
Even though my career is technical/mechanical , fishing reel mechanics/ disassembly and assembly is hard for me
im sure u can figure it, but there are some tiny parts that even when u know what to do are very difficult to put back together. I kind of know where the trouble is and stay away from those : ).
WooHoo 2 more videos coming!!!
real soon. Interesting they all are!
Bravo
thanks doc!
With your delivery, I expect that adding a little BFS will add 100K subscibers to your channel. Bravo, encore une fois!@@ifishcatfish

Also if you tighten those screws on the knobs just a hair to tight it will make them not spin as good. I always do a 10th of turn losing it until it spins really well and then leave it. Believe it or not you can actually compress bearings wich reduces there velocity to spin well.
both issues you described are results of improper shimming. If the knob is shimmed correctly, you can tighten all the way and it will still spin 100% free, because the screw will not be making contact with the top race. Doesn't matter how tight u screw it. If you have too many shims or you bent one of the shims when u removed it and put it back, now the knob is putting pressure on the bearing, and you are incorrectly compensating for improper shimming with not tightening the screw.
The shims and the screws usually touch only the inner race of the bearing. U can compress them as much as u want and will do nothing to the bearing. Anyway.. too long but if u have these issues u have a shim that is too thick or bent or wrong size
Interesting. I will definitely have to give that a try. I will try some shims in the meantime as an experiment but it has been very exceptionally well for me. Also thanks for doing this videos. You did one a few years ago about the amount of grease to put inside the spinning reel and it made a huge difference! Baitcasters for me are easier than spinning. I use dg06 and never star drag grease for the gears
I'm a subscriber, and I have no idea who Realistic Fishing is. Then again, I only subscribed to you a few minutes ago.
oh..
In these circumstances i will grant an Excuse.
Oh I seen a baitcaster and thought is Victor getting into BFS I was intrigued!😂
sorry for the disappointment : )

Hey Victor this comment is not about this video but I need a place to share something. So I mentioned that I bought St. Croix panfish series rods for my boys becasue I could not find any 7' Presso rods. Well my shipment arrived on Monday and I ended up returning it today.
They are nice rods but..... I didn't like the way the feel. I didn't try them out on the water because I simply did not like the action and whippyness they seem to have. I held one in one hand and a Presso in the other and kind of shook them around a bit. The presso has a soft whip but it finds it's way back to neutral pretty quick. The St Croix was still bouncing around a bit longer than the Presso and it just was to jittery. It also felt a bit more tip heavy when holding it. No reel was attached to either of them while I shook them so to speak.
The blank just felt jumpy and it has a strange action. The rod is decent looking and the guides were very nice but compaired to the Presso, the aesthetics were not even close. At half the cost the Presso looks and feels like gold in the hand. The St Croix does not.
Today I looked again online to see if I could find 7' Presso and I found several listed in Michigan at Franks Outdoors. I placed an order and then printed out a return slip to Cabelas.
I think the St. Croix is priced way too high for what it is. I have other St. Croix rods that are nice and perhaps worth their price but that one is not in my opinion. Especially when you can buy two Presso's for the same cost as one St.Croix panfish.
i might make a communit post later from this. Feedback appreciated. Also confirms my own impressions of the previous model. I was hoping the new model had a different action. Please provide exact model
St. Croix Panfish Series Spinning Rod - PNS70LXF
Length: 7'
Power: Light
Action: Extra Fast
SKU: 3280150@@ifishcatfish I tell you what. I have never returned anything to Cabelas but that was delivered on Monday, returned via fed ex on Tuesday and already today they have processed a return. That is fast and I do feel bad returning it because there is nothing wrong with it other than I didn't like it and part of that is becasue the Presso feels better at half the price. I should have sent it down there to you so you could check it out before sending it back. Like I said I didn't take it out and try it on the water because I already was not impressed holding it. Too jumpy for me.
@@greenpea9412 Honestly, after seeing you bought the XF model, i feel you deserve your product and return should be denied. Exactly what did u expect with XF? U need to stay away from XF like from fire
Lesson learned. @@ifishcatfish
Maybe you've already mentioned it along the line, but I've heard rumblings that Abu makes these reels.
i actually haven't heard that. I thought they were chinese, and thats why i was surprised they feel so nice..
I've used a lubricant called Krytox nylagel. Was developed for the Concord. Kind of expensive. High temp high speed.
Does this have any advantage in fishing? Im using only fishing lubes ..
@@ifishcatfish don't know but a tiny tube was over $20. And if it works on a super sonic plane. Must be good.
@@ifishcatfish Amazon has it .5 oz for $24.
@@gordon985 must be good for supersonic plane..
@@gordon985 i already have all the best synthetic greases from Japan, designed for specific applications. Each application has different grease. I would buy this too, if i knew exactly what it does and what are the advantages/disadvantages..
The knob damage was likely done by his dog.
if he has a dog, sounds like a probably cause..
Did he bite the knob? That is too funny lol :)
its a 30 dollars reel made in china at that price point there disposable now if it was a more pricey brand then yeah it worth fixing it
but this is Realistic Fishing's reel..
"If all you care about is economics..." @@ifishcatfish
Love your videos but I have a question, is there any specific reason why we use RH retrieve baitcasters even though we're right hand dominant and use LH spinning reels?
I have wondered that myself - how did this insanity begin and how is it still alive today. U should hold the rod with ur dominant hand! There are zero reasons for the opposite and only in USA people donthe opposite
@@ifishcatfish Thank you for your reply, I agree 100%
tackle question: Victor ...wanted to get a rod for Ned Rig fishing ....from reading on the interweb ..many folks say get medium light xfast . I will be fishing from shore on a small lake. I think you are not a fan of xfast from something you said in an older video. Is extra fast for my purpose a bad idea ... fishing ned rig for small bass and crappie ( Zman micro finnese 1.75 trd) ...many thanks
You want extra slow, not extra fast. Extra fast means extra soft tip and extra stiff blank. If anybody says anything else, tell him he's a FOOL, and ask him if he would like to debate me LIVE. You want something with stiffer tip so u have good vibration transfer. Given that you want this for fishing from home, I can STRONGLY recommend either the Soare XR 7'6 Tubular (i have review), or the Yamaga blanks that i reviewed. Both rods will handle 1.75 TRD with jigs up to 3 grams beautifully. They are not extra slow action, but they have absolutely amazing TIP feel, and enough length for bank fishing
@@ifishcatfish thank you so much ...I forgot to ask for a rod recommendation but you give it .... I will watch the video and get the rod.
Proper maintenance is key to long term survival of any reel, cheap or expensive.
Maintenance is, of course, great, but not many have skills or patience for that. What is critical for those who don't do maintenance is to keep the reel clean and away from sand and dust. As long as sand never gets inside the reel, u can always open , clean and grease it. Once u get sand inside, there is no recovery.
@@ifishcatfish Yep. At that point you have to start from scratch.
It’s gross only if you say gross twice in a row like beetle juice.
😂
U got more money in that reel and you can buy the combo for $39 but I would never buy it or fish with it
This reel is for normal people, not purebred champions like you.
😅@@ifishcatfish
What was he doing , chewing on the handle? Lol
there is a story behind every knob..
Hello I fish I ordered some drag Greece from your website please send to 1505
Both order and email received. Address changed. Take very good note of how ur drag sounds before application : )
Those are rat bites on the knob
I would be interested to know how u kkow that..
Definitely or from mice. They smell either the bait used, or fishy slime. They love chewing those plastic resins up when they smell like that
wendover. Got a Chocolate Lab that could easily do that to any fishing reel knob... and then wag her tail eagerly.
Your review of the reel's interior is inspiring me to purchase an Ozark Trail casting combo. Thanks Victor!
@@ifishcatfish i have the same marks on my old Shakespeare reel. I looked at the cctv and saw the rat gnawing on the knob.
Either way, gross gross.........LOL.
