  • In Adara, a little village on the Atauro island, only women dive. The island which is located in the Indonesian Archipelago, now belongs to Timor Leste. The women there, started to fish because everything went dry and it was impossible to make any plants grow, so little by little, they gave up on the gardens. Here, family is the backbone of the community, so anything caught during fishing will be shared among everyone.

These ladies remind me of my islands. Our fish drying technics are bit different. When night falls and it's low tide, we'd walk the reefs hunting for fish and she'll fish, clams, octopus or squid. Thank you, really enjoyed watching this!

Highly recommended to those who loves snorkeling and scuba diving to give a try in Ataúro, Timor-Leste. The accessibility to one of the world most biodiverse coral reef is easy. #TLCoralTriangle
My first experience of scuba diving in Ataúro was amazing; we spotted four species of whales, pods of dolphin, dugong and fyi, no need to do snorkeling to see those cetaceans, it’s likely to see them on your way from capital to the island. . You can also check out Akrema beach, 3 locations of hot water beach, Coral Wall in Adara, Coral Garden and lots more.

These little documentaries are great. I live in Europe ... and seeing a bit of these peoples culture I see how much we have lost. Nobody is thankful to the land here .... to the land and forests that (still) keep us alive. I am a farmer ... and I wonder a lot about what has happened .... and why and how we have lost our deep bonds with what is around us. It definitely has to do with mono-theism and the power politics and aggression of the church. People don't give thanks to the animals and the plants and the mountains. They pray to one god above it all. We have a real amnesia about our history here. Rural populations have been living in serfdom until not so long ago ... the history has been forgotten ... but the reverberations are still there. To this day farming and all work with the earth has a very low social status ... farming salaries are the worst .... and then we have those farmers who drive around in tractors bigger than small houses ... kind of a reaction of having been laughed at and mocked in school for smelling like it does in the stable. The pride is broken. Ancestral grounding lost. And that is different with the people in these documentaries. Thanks.

The crazy part about language is two words: mom and dad. In most language, its "pa" and "ma" or very similar and even in Atauro island, the words are the same. Its shows most languages are connected at one time and the two most important words in everyone's life hasn't changed in tens of thousands of years.

Not really. Tetun (or Tetum if you use the Portuguese word) has about 40% of its vocabulary derived from Portuguese. The Tetum word for father is actually ‘aman’, but the more familiar term is pai or even baba.
